Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a grand Hindu temple in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during a two-day visit to the country.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi is built on a 27-acre (11-hectare) plot donated by the UAE government.

India had announced its construction during Mr Modi's visit to UAE in 2018.

Analysts say the temple will likely boost the government's Hindu nationalist agenda ahead of the general elections due in two months.

The opening comes weeks after Mr Modi inaugurated a grand temple to Hindu god Ram in the northern Indian city of Ayodhya. It replaces a 16th-Century mosque torn down by Hindu mobs in 1992, sparking riots in which nearly 2,000 people died.

The temple in Abu Dhabi is run by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, which calls itself a "spiritual, volunteer-driven fellowship" aimed at "fostering Hindu values of faith, service and global harmony".

The organisation, which claims a 200-year-old history, is headquartered in Mr Modi's home state Gujarat.

According to Pew research centre, there are 660,000 Hindus in UAE. While temples have been around in the UAE for decades, this is reportedly the first one to be built using traditional techniques.

Made from pink sandstone from Rajasthan state and white Italian marble, the temple was carved in India and assembled in Dubai.

With a height of 108ft (32.9m), length of 262ft (79.8m) and width of 180ft (54.8m), it was reportedly built on a budget of 7bn rupees ($84.2m; £67.09m).

Commute into Dubai from Sharjah? Well, did you know you are able to get the ferry?

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) operates eight journeys a day between Dubai and Sharjah from Monday to Thursday, and six journeys from Friday to Sunday.
This Dubai to Sharjah ferry shuttles between Al Ghubaiba Marine Station in Dubai and Aquarium Marine Station in Sharjah.
The journey takes about 35 minutes. Say hello to a shorter commutetime.

A great way to avoid the traffic on the roads, the marine transport line was first launched in 2019

The Dubai to Sharjah ferry was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed in August 2023.
On weekdays, there will be two morning journeys from Sharjah at 7am and 8.30am, alongside one morning journey from Dubai at 7.45am.

In the evening, there will be two journeys from Sharjah at 4.45pm and 6.16pm and three journeys from Dubai at 4pm, 5.30pm and 7pm.

From Friday to Sunday, there will be six journeys, three journeys from each side starting from noon. Departure times from Sharjah will be at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.
Journeys from Dubai will start at 3pm, 5pm and 8pm.

Emirates has announced that all passengers travelling to Dubai – either for a holiday or a layover of eight hours or more – will get free tickets to two of the city’s biggest attractions: Museum of the Future and Atlantis Aquaventure waterpark.

What’s the catch? We know it sounds too good to be true, but it’s really that simple. The offer is valid on all return flight tickets – economy, business, and first class – bought between January 12 and February 1 for travel before March 31, 2024. (There’s a reason the Dubai-based carrier was named the best airline in the world).

With 22 hectares of water-based fun to discover, Aquaventure at Atlantis The Palm is a bucket list Dubai experience. Across three super-sized towers there’s more than 100 rides to discover, whether you’re just looking to chill out on the rapids, or face your fears on The Leap Of Faith. To avoid the biggest queues head down early and tick your bucket list slides off first, but with so many rapids, rides and racers to try out, you won’t ever have to wait too long.

If you thought the exterior of The Museum of the Future was unique, wait until you step into the seven-storey high space. It is just as futuristic as the exterior and gives visitors a peek into the year 2071.
