Ekweremadu, wife, doctor, jailed for organ trafficking

Former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice, 56, were sentenced to prison in the United Kingdom for organ trafficking.

Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice, 56, and their doctor, Obinna Obeta, were found culpable of violating the Modern Slavery Act.

The court found the trio guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey.

They criminally conspired to bring the 21-year-old Lagos street trader to London to exploit him for his kidney, the jury found.

The organ donor had been offered an illegal reward to become a donor for the senator’s daughter after kidney disease forced her to drop out of a master’s degree in film at Newcastle University, the court heard.

Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison; his wife, Beatrice, was sentenced to four years and six months of imprisonment; and Obeta received a ten-year prison term.

Justice Johnson told the defendants: “In each of your cases, the offence you committed is so serious that neither a fine nor a community sentence can be justified.”

The case marked the first time defendants have been convicted under the Modern Slavery Act of an organ harvesting conspiracy.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has said the old N200, N5O0, NIO00 bank notes remain legal tender till December 31, 2023 as stipulated by the Supreme Court.

The apex bank's Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin stated this in a statement on Monday.

"In compliance with the established tradition of obedience to court orders and sustenance of the Rule of
Law Principle that characterised the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, and by extension, the operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as a regulator, Deposit Money Banks operating in Nigeria have been directed to comply with the Supreme Court ruling of March 3, 2023.
"Accordingly, the CBN met with the Bankers' Committee and has directed that the old N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes remain legal tender alongside the redesigned banknotes till December 31, 2023.
"Consequently, all concerned are directed to conform accordingly."

Popular Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola better known as Portable, has cried out after being beaten by some of his close friends after interfering in their dispute with his sister.

The singer made this known via his Instagram Story on Friday.

He shared the photo of his sister on the hospital bed, saying, “Olopa ma ko everybody, see wetin oke osa boiz do my big sister. Akoi big problem.”

The singer stated that he was severely injured on his body, while his sister was hospitalised as a result of his friends’ attack.

Portable stated that he was friends with the guys who beat him up and recounted how he helped them and how they were envious of his success.

He said in Pidgin English, “As you can see. This life as you dey make am, make you dey run for people.The more you grow, run from people. Dem no want your success. Dem don shook me o. Na my n***a shock me. I no know watein he use shock me o. We don gather dey back in the days. Base on say I make am, na me still dey help am. He later con nack me base on sey you dey beat my sister.”

Hours later, the singer shared a post on his Instagram that he had taken legal steps and briefed his lawyer on his incident.

"He admitted everything he did to Wojtyla. And this is described in two documents, even in three," Overbeek said.

"And that means that we know for 100 percent sure that in 1970 Karol Wojtyla already knew about s*x abuse." The priest was later jailed but once he was freed Wojtyla allowed him to continue his ministry, Overbeek said.

The ruling nationalist and populist party announced it would adopt a resolution "defending the good name of Saint John Paul II" in parliament.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Lodz, Grzegorz Rys, said that "no one in the world understands what the Polish people are doing to John Paul II today," referring to the accusations against the late pontiff.

But for Overbeek, "the most troublesome fact is that (the pope) was very forgiving towards priests who did these kind of things, but paid no attention to the victims and their families.

"We are used to this empathetic, warm, sympathetic person" when people think of the pope, Overbeek said.

"But here we see a completely different face of the same person... the apparatchik of the institution of the church."

Overbeek said he checked his findings with other sources, including the victims, witnesses and their testimonies.

"I was the first person who they talked to about what they have been through as children," Overbeek added, saying survivors were afraid to stand up in public.

"In this country, the victims of clerical s*x abuse are afraid... it should be the other way around," he insisted.

A personality cult around John Paul II -- who was made a saint in 2014 -- is still strong in Poland but has been crumbling in recent years, especially among younger people.

Ekke Overbeek's book is likely to deal a further blow to the former pope's image.
Among the cases the journalist cites is of a priest accused of forcing 10-year-old girls to perform oral s*x.

"When Sadus got in trouble after being accused of molesting boys, he personally helped him to escape Poland. He organised a new career for him in Austria," Overbeek said.

The journalist said "the big question" is whether Wojtyla told the Archbishop of Vienna about Sadus' criminal past.

For Overbeek, "it seems that the answer is no."

The Polish church reacted with fury to the new claims, with the country's conservative government also hitting out at the book.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki defended Wojtyla, calling him "our dear pope" and blaming journalists for "going beyond civilised debate".

Pope John Paul II helped 'cover up' child abuse in Poland, says book.

Warsaw. John Paul II "knew" about cases of child abuse by Catholic priests in Poland and helped cover them up before becoming pope in 1978, a new book claims.

Dutch journalist Ekke Overbeek spent more than a decade combing through archives and interviewing victims and witnesses for "Maxima Culpa", which has sparked an outcry in the pope's native Poland.

"I found evidence that he not only knew... about cases of s*x abuse among his own priests in the Archdiocese of Krakow, but he also helped to cover up those cases," Overbeek told AFP before the book's release.

Overbeek -- who has been living in Poland for more than 20 years -- had already published a bombshell account of victims of pa******le priests in 2013.

Some of the documents cited in his new book come from the archives of the Communist-era secret police, with defenders of the pope pilloring the author for using them.

However, Overbeek told AFP that "the archives of the Roman Catholic Church are closed for journalists," an obstacle also encountered by others looking into the accusations against John Paul II.

The Polish church has refused to provide documents to the judiciary and a public commission of inquiry investigating cases of church abuse of minors.

A wooden object found at a Roman fort on Hadrian's
Wall in the UK may have been a 2nd Century s*x toy.
Experts first thought the 6.2in (16cm) object may have been a sewing tool, but now think it may be the earliest example of a wooden phallus found anywhere in the ex-Roman empire.
When they analysed it they found both ends were noticeably smoother, indicating repeated use over time - suggesting it might have had a more intimate use.
