Mitsubishi claims to have created the fastest elevator system in the world, with a travelling speed of 1,230m a minute – nearly 46mph.
The new technology will be installed in Shanghai Tower, China’s tallest building.
The speed was achieved through the development of new equipment, including a control panel that can maximise the traction machine’s performance, and improvements to safety devices such as the speed governor, brake device and buffer. Once the elevator is equipped with the new technologies, it can travel from the second-level basement to the 119th floor in just 53 seconds, said the company.
One of the three elevators servicing the observation deck will use the new speed. The operator at Shanghai Tower will have the option of switching speeds between 1,080m and 1,230m meters per minute according to actual passenger traffic conditions.
The system is being manufactured by Inazawa Works and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and will be installed by Shanghai Mitsubishi Elevator.

Cemex Mexico has announced the development of a fire- and explosion-resistant concrete to safeguard a banking data centre.
The company designed this solution specifically to safeguard Santander Group’s data processing centre, Proyecto Q, in Queretaro, Mexico.
When a petrol station was built 20 metres away from Proyecto Q’s façade, the Spanish bank carried out a risk analysis and concluded that its facilities were vulnerable to the effects of potential thermal radiation (fire) and overpressure (explosion). It turned to Cemex for the design and construction of a perimeter wall capable of withstanding both scenarios.
“Only Cemex, through its Cement & Ready Mix Technology Center, was able to provide us with the perfect solution for this significant challenge,” said David Romero, real estate director in Queretaro for the Santander Group in Mexico.
The result developed for the Santander Group is a 204-metre long and 1.1-metre thick perimeter barrier with a maximum height of 10.3 metres. The design comprises two 50cm- and 20cm-thick walls, separated by a 40cm-wide air chamber. Cemex in Mexico supplied 3,000m3 of a high-strength structural concrete with special raw materials that increase its fire resistance. In addition, it has been specified to be durable and self-compacting.
A full-scale prototype of the wall was built at the Efectis and TNO research centers in the Netherlands in order to certify Cemex’s specialist concrete for the project,. The wall was subjected to physical fire tests, withstanding a temperature of 1,150° C for more than 60 minutes, and to impact tests of a direct overpressure wave of 1.1 bars for 80 milliseconds. The success of these experiments met the demands stipulated in preliminary studies, and the performance of the wall was awarded certification from rating company Bureau Veritas.

Turner Construction Company has celebrated the official project launch of what will be Malaysia’s tallest tower.
The 118-storey building in Kuala Lumpur is at the heart of the Warisan Merdeka mixed-use development.
Senior leaders from developer Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) gathered alongside Turner and other project stakeholders as Malaysia’s prime minister officially launched the project and gave the tower its name: Merdeka PNB118.
The final height has not been disclosed but the Petronas Towers, by comparison, have 88 floors above ground and five below. Between 1998 and 2004 the Petronas Towers was the world's tallest building, at 451.9 metres. Merdeka PNB118 is set to reach even higher.
“The Merdeka PNB118 tower project builds on our experience managing landmark projects in Southeast Asia, as well as our experience delivering technically sophisticated, mega-tall structures in growing cities around the world,” said Peter Ramstedt, Turner’s project director.
The building is designed by Australia-based Fender Katsalidis Architects and stands within a 19-acre, multi-phase development. It is scheduled for completion in 2020 and will house PNB’s group of companies over 60 floors, with 23 floors of rentable commercial space and an 18-storey luxury with 236 rooms, as well as sky lobbies and observation decks.
The project is seeking triple Platinum sustainability certification under the USGBC’s LEED program, the Malaysian Green Building Index (GBI), and the Malaysian GreenRE program, in addition to MSC Malaysia Cybercentre status.
“With Kuala Lumpur as Turner’s regional hub, the growth of the Malaysian market is very important to us,” said Ramstedt. “The Warisan Merdeka development will be an iconic landmark, adding to Kuala Lumpur’s attractiveness as an investment and tourist destination and helping to define a new Malaysia.”

Vinci and Bouygues Construction have won a further contract for the construction of the Cairo metro.
The joint venture led by Vinci Construction Grands Projects, alongside Bouygues Construction’s subsidiary Bouygues Travaux Publics and their Egyptian partners Orascom Construction and Arabco Contractors, has won the Phase 3 contract for Line 3.
Vinci and Bouygues have been involved in building Cairo’s metro system since 1981 and the JV is currently working on Phase 4a of Line 3 under a contract that was signed last year.
The new €1.1bn (£847m), 67-month contract for the National Authority for Tunnels covers civil engineering for Phase 3 of Line 3, including 17.7 km of new line and 15 stations (eight underground, five elevated and two at ground level). The works will require construction of a new tunnel under the Nile. Once completed, Line 3 will increase the overall length of the Cairo metro system to 100 km and serve five million passengers daily.
The project will generate about 5,000 jobs and will also offer French SMEs a large number of opportunities. In the previous phase of the project, handed over in 2014, the joint venture called on more than 600 French SMEs as suppliers and subcontractors.

‘Anti-Heat Stress Clothing for Construction Workers in Hot and Humid Weather’
Construction's greatest thinkers and innovators are put into the spotlight…
A uniform that combats heat stress for construction workers in hot conditions by using a new generation of fabrics has scooped one of the Premier Awards at the 2015 International Innovation and Research Awards run by the Chartered Institute of Building.
Developed by Professor Albert P.C. Chan FCIOB and Professor Francis K.W. Wong FCIOB from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University the uniform reduces physiological strain by 17% and body heat storage by 29%. The innovation has already received more than 14,000 orders from the Construction Industry Council in Hong Kong for its trainees.
Joining the uniform as Premier Award winner is a digital system developed at Heriot-Watt University that utilises sensor technology to detect a construction workers risk of musculoskeletal injury. It does this by capturing accurate physical activity for early prevention of work-related injuries.
Professor Stuart Green FCIOB, Chair of the Judging Panel, said: “These awards are now firmly established in the innovation landscape. They have achieved global status and the dominant quality continues on a strong upward curve. This year’s entries have been especially impressive and success in innovation and research should be celebrated. The winners deserve every recognition.”
More than 160 entries from 18 countries vied for the top awards which celebrate the best ideas in Digital Innovation, Innovation in Education and Training and a range of research categories. They recognise achievement across the built environment and are open to entries from recent graduates, industry practitioners or experienced academics, including international and non-CIOB members.

The world’s longest floating bridge opened on Saturday across Lake Washington in the USA.
Washington state governor Jay Inslee cut the ribbon to commemorate the completion of the new State Route 520 floating bridge.
During the ceremony, a representative of Guinness World Records, presented a certificate designating the new floating bridge – which measures 7,708.494 feet (2,349.54m) end to end – as the world’s longest.
“This is what it’s all about – seeing years of public engagement, planning, design and construction all come to fruition,” said Roger Millar, acting secretary of the Washington State Department of Transportation. “This grand bridge is going to serve our region well for a long long time.”
The new, six-lane bridge opens to vehicles, in two stages, later this month. It is replacing a four-lane predecessor, built in the early 1960s, that is structurally vulnerable to windstorms and strong waves. Benefits of the new bridge include bigger, heavier, stronger pontoons and anchors; a bus and carpool lane in each direction; and wide shoulders that allow disabled vehicles to pull off the highway without blocking traffic.
Pontoon construction began in Tacoma in late 2011, followed by the start of anchor construction in Kenmore the following year. In spring 2012, began bridge construction began on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. The old SR 520 floating bridge is expected to be taken apart and removed from the lake by the end of this year. Its pontoons will be towed away and reused for other marine purposes.

Climatic Construction: Powering On In The Face Of Climate Challenges
Brutal weather conditions have created widespread issues across the
country, leaving key construction works in development. Western states face record-breaking droughts while those near the Gulf experience historic flooding, thus construction companies have found themselves in a precarious situation. While some construction companies and local economies are able to make it through unscathed, others are facing unfortunate decline.
