Dubai On Its Way To Become A Bicycle-Friendly City

An inspection was conducted on the cycling tracks and pedestrian crossings across Dubai to ensure that the emirate turns into a bicycle-friendly city. The inspection was carried out by Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and Lt. General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.

So far, the RTA has laid out around 425 km cycling tracks in areas like Saih Al Salam, Bab Al Shams, Al Qudra Road, Dubai Water Canal, Jumeirah Beach Road, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, Al Khawaneej and Al Warqa, together with the joint tracks in Al Qusais, Al Karama and Al Mankhool. According to the RTA, it aims to extend the number of bicycle tracks in Dubai to 647 km by 2025.

Aside from the cycling tracks, they have also put a focus on pedestrian bridges as part of reducing the number of pedestrian fatalities to make Dubai one of the world's safest cities in traffic safety by 2021, aiming a zero-fatality rate on pedestrians. RTA has considered certain parameters in determining where to put the pedestrian bridges. These parameters would include the intensity of traffic, pedestrian accidents and fatalities, speed limit, number of lanes, the movement of people between the two sides of the road, and the nearest pedestrian crossing and bus stops. The number of footbridges constructed up to date is 116 and the RTA is aiming to add 34 more pedestrian bridges to bring the number up to 150 by 2026.

Etihad to Delay Flight Operations Until May 16

Due to the ongoing situation being faced by the world right now, Etihad has delayed its original plan on resuming flight operations on May 1 to May 16. Originally, Etihad's decision to resume their flight operations on May 1 was due to the lifting of imposed travel restrictions by the UAE government. However, that was not the case.

The only flights being operated by the different airlines in the country, including Etihad, are repatriation flights, allowing it's UAE nationals to come back to the country and for expatriates to go back to their home countries. According to them, flights are still bookable from May 16, however, they will be keeping a closer watch in case any changes in the situation. Etihad will announce in its proper channels if there are any changes in their implementations.

In order to stem the tide of transmission, the Dubai RTA has taken precautions by distributing and putting up stickers to promote awareness on the safety precautions to be followed including social distancing which should be strictly observed in the bus and metro.

Operating time of the Dubai Metro from Saturday to Thursday range from 7 am to 11 pm while on Friday, 10 am to 11 pm.
