Always on the lookout for unique hotels and if they have a great story about them, I like them even more.
I stambled on Trevarefabrikken by chance, as it doesn’t at all look like a hotel from the outside – nor does it have any ‘hotel’ sign.
Established in the 40’s, Trevarefabrikken used to be a carpentry, cod liver oil and shrimp peeling factory. In 2014 the factory was sold to 4 Norwegians from Bergen who feel in love with Henningsvær and wanted to make a cool and innovative spot for locals and those passing through. Today the factory is a meeting place for the entire Lofoten region, with a restaurant, café, accommodation, yoga and a wide range of cultural offerings.
Unfortunately I didn’t stay there, as I discovered it too late, but I’m thinking that a yoga retreat there would be pretty special. What do you think, would you take part?

There are several charming little fishing villages in the Lofoten islands, but my favourite is Henningsvær.
Fun fact: the florists work voluntarily to make the village nice! Isn’t that a great community spirit?!?

One of the best things about the Lofoten islands in summer is the everlasting light. That means you have so much time to do so many things! Like hiking at midnight or going out at 2.30a.m. to take pictures like this!

Put the Douro Valley on your bucket list! Whether you’re a wine drinker or not, the Douro Valley’s patchwork of terraced vineyards is a real sight to behold.
Best way to explore it is to base yourself in a ‘quinta’ (country estate). We chose Ventozelo Hotel & Quinta, a 500-year-old huge farm surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery and with beautifully renovated rooms scattered in different buildings of the quinta. Ventozelo even has its own jetty, which makes that little cruise on the Douro even easier and more romantic. The moment I set foot there, I knew it was going to be added to my ‘Fav Hotels’ list!

I’d been eyeing Sao Lourenco do Barrocal for a few years and our recent visit exceeded my expectations. This huge farming estate has been in the same family for 200 years and once used to house 50 farmers families. Simple and understated elegance reigns supreme in this rural retreat, where a big effort is made to preserve authenticity and traditions. The gorgeous landscape of rolling hills and olives trees also play its part in making you never want to leave.

How wonderful to end the year and welcome the new one in the gem that is Orta San Giulio. This medieval ‘borgo’, with its maze of narrow cobbled lanes, instantly transports you into another time and the romantic souls would definitely appreciate its magic - probably even more so during the winter months. Lake Orta may not have the glossy and glitzy beauty of the world-famous lake Como or Maggiore, but I instantly fell in love with its understated beauty and authentic atmosphere.

Impromptu things are often the best. Wasn’t in the festive mood yet, but snowy medieval Transylvanian castles are definitely evoking the Xmas magic! 🎄

Missing my pugliesi friends today and wish I was with them having a gorgeous Sunday lunch… so in their honour I’m sharing this - il biscotto cegliese. It may not look like much, but trust me, it’s divine and listed amongst the 10 best Italian biscuits.
Where to find the top one? At Caffè Centrale in Ceglie Messapica.

Best time of year to come back to Dubai.
Blue skies have returned, humidity gone, temperatures around the 30’sC, sea water just fresh enough to cool you down.

The glitz and glam of Capri is undeniable and it hits you as soon as you set foot on the island. But what really stays with you is its incredibly abundant nature, the hundreds shades of blue and green, the walks with breathtaking views at every corner, the flowers you’ve never seen, the ancient history…
Choose to stay a few nights to enjoy it at a much relaxed pace after the hordes of day-visitors have gone and, better yet, visit in October when the crowds are smaller but the days are still warm and sunny. There’s plenty to do on the magnificent blue island.

A typical feature of Gargano: il trabucco.
This ancient fishing machine, made with Aleppo pine wood that allows fishing without having to go to sea, is also widespread on the coast of lower Adriatic regions of Abruzzo and Molise, but in Gargano they are protected as monumental heritage.
This one, Trabucco da Mimì near Peschici, has been converted into a fish (of course!) restaurant and also has 4 beautifully appointed rooms a few steps away from the sea.
Certainly not a hidden secret and very very popular, it is still a magical and very romantic spot for a sunset aperitivo.

Gargano, the so-called “Italy’s spur”, is not the easiest place to reach, especially if flying in from overseas, but definitely worth the effort, particularly in the low-season, when the majority of the tourists have gone but you can still enjoy a swim in its beautiful sea and incredibly quaint villages like Vieste.

When you finally reconnect with an old-time friend that you haven’t seen in 18 years and she happens to live around the corner from the place where they make one of the most highly prized (and priced) wines in Italy, the logical thing to do is to spend the afternoon strolling around Montalcino and enjoy sunset with a glass of Brunello at the winery that made it famous the world over - Castello Banfi.
Perfect if you wanted to stay a little longer too as it houses a Relais & Chateux hotel and a Michelin-star restaurant.

We loved our stay at Odles Lodge, a beautiful design-led hideaway in the Plose area of the Dolomites. As well as offering jaw-dropping views over the Odle group of mountains, it balances seclusion and privacy with welcomed touches of simple luxury and comfort - think scrumptious alpine breakfast delivered to your door every day in a pinewood box and an honesty cellar. Perfect for lovers and families alike.

We are very blessed in Italy to have breathtaking places like the Dolomites, which are by no coincidence a UNESCO World Heritage site.
After 10 years of nagging, I finally showed some of these majestic landscapes to my husband and he was not disappointed.

The Italian region I hail from, Emilia Romagna, is known internationally for its motors (Ferrarari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Ducati, etc) and its food (Parmigiano Reggiano, Prosciutto di Parma, lasagne, balsamic vinegar, etc.). What most tourists don’t know however is that we are also full of artistic and historic gems, perfect for people who like to go off the beaten track. During this trip I’m taking the time to discover some of these myself, like these two gorgeous medieval villages, Castell’Arquato and Vigoleno, both listed amongst the “Borghi più belli d’Italia” (the most beautiful hamlets of Italy). Rolling hills of vineyards and sunflowers fields all around make for a perfect early summer outing, of course accompanied by some of the best food and wine.
