Come the summer months, nesting seabirds take over the offshore islands of Antigua. They add so much life and vibrancy to the journey down the coastline.
A gentle reminder when visiting spots such as Prickly Pear Island or Great Bird Island to be extra cautious walking in any grassy areas, as their nests and eggs are easily camouflaged.

The entrance to English Harbour is guarded on one side by these impressive sandstone formations known as the Pillars of Hercules.
Formed over thousands of years by the wind, sea and rain, they're possible to visit by foot from Galleon Bay but best seen by boat.
You can often spot sea turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, octopus, squid, and many fish amongst the corals growing in the depths in front of it, making it a popular spot for snorkelers and divers. Also located at this site is an 18th century anchor, as well as a coral nursery programme that began in 2021.
So, where does the name come from?
To be honest, we aren't totally sure of the exact origin story of how this site was named. However, looking at the mythology of the original Pillars of Hercules at the Straight of Gibraltar, we can imagine why this epic formation in Antigua was named so!
"In Greek mythology the Pillars indicated the limit of the known world: βgrasping the Pillarsβ was a metaphor for reaching the ultimate in human achievement. For mere mortals, they marked the end of the journey, the point at which one must turn back.
Heraklesβ journey beyond the Pillars, during his Tenth Labor, came to represent a heroic and unending quest for knowledge, and the Pillars became not a point of retreat, but a gateway to the unknown."
Epic indeed π

This secluded paradise on one of Antigua's beautiful offshore islands is special for SO many reasons.
Not only is it home to many species of land and marine life (such as the upside down jellyfish in the video), it is also surrounded by vital mangroves and is an important nesting bird habitat.
Sadly, it won't be like this much longer. A neighboring luxury resort has purchased the land to build more megamansions, which will undoubtedly displace and disrupt the fragile ecosystems in and around the island.
We would love to show it to you while we can π

Woo-hoo! 27 more bags of trash cleared from Hideaway Beach. It's been so rewarding seeing the area transform over the past few cleanups. We can't wait to finish it off so that it's easier to maintain!
Come join us
Sunday, June 25th from 4:30-6:30pm
at Hideaway Beach
We're hoping that with enough manpower, we can get the remainder of the trash in the area π€
Adopt-a-Coastline is also hosting a cleanup
Saturday, June 3rd from 7:30-9:30am
at Seaforth Beach
It's been amazing to have new faces every week. Thank you to everyone who has contributed time or supplies so far - we appreciate you!
See you next time :)

Throwback to this encounter with a Spotted Eagle Ray π€©
Remember when interacting with wildlife to
never chase or touch;
stay still and allow them to come to you if they want to!
It keeps the interaction respectful and ends up being even more rewarding if they are curious π

Every day should be Earth Day - but why not use the added buzz to bring more attention to the work that needs to be done in caring for our planet.
I (Brittney of CocoVibes) spoke on Pointe FM yesterday about the link between ocean health and human health.
About 80% of the trash we are picking up from the coastline is from processed food; snacks, bottles, plastic cutlery, plastic water bottles, etc.
There's a strong link between the increase in diabetes & hypertension and the increased consumption of processed foods.
The packages of foods that are slowly killing us are washing up on our shores and being left at our beaches; endangering the health and well-being of all other living things.
There is so much to dig into regarding this topic, but to cap it off: the ocean's health starts with our health, and we can start to make a difference by changing what we are consuming.
Next time you're buying groceries, pay attention to how many packages you're picking up and how many ingredients are in waxh one. Then, switch it up and head to the local market first instead; does that change the amount of waste you procured?
We are SO grateful for @blue_sky_wellness @crabbehillbeachrentals @katbyles of @adoptacoastline and Giovanni for coming to help us clean Hideaway Beach this morning. It was in a VERY bad state, and we made great progress!!! Thank you thank you thank you!
Stay tuned for May's cleanup date! πβ»οΈπ

Seagrass Meadows are one of the most dynamic ecosystems, yet no one really talks about them!
Not only do seagrass meadows do wonders for our planet by capturing carbon, but they are also home to dozens of species from sea stars to urchins and sea cucumbers.
π’ Our favorite thing might just be the relationship between Green Sea Turtles and seagrass meadows - the turtles "mow the lawn" as they feed on the seagrass, which in turn keeps the meadows at the perfect length to allow for proper photosynthesis and shelter for other species.
Fun fact: Green Sea Turtles are named such not for their exterior coloring, but for the fact that their flesh is green - thanks to all that seagrass nibbling π
Seagrass meadows are facing some threats due to modern human activity - including fertilizer and pesticide use leaching into the ocean as well as boat anchors and propellers tearing up the grass.
One thing we can all do while snorkeling these meadows:
β‘οΈ Be mindful of our fins!
Stirring up sediment can bury seagrass and other organisms, preventing them from thriving.
This post was inspired by a past post by the @emcantigua who are doing incredible work restoring coral reefs around Antigua - check them out! πͺΈ

Under the seaaa ππ π¦π‘π
Is there anything more magical than encounters with our ocean dwelling friends?
We think not π€
But remember when interacting with wildlife to:
π Keep a safe distance
π¦ Don't chase, harass, or touch anything
π¬ BE PATIENT! Allow the animal to come to you.
The turtle pictured in this reel lives in an area where snorkelers frequently visit, and therefore isn't so shy as most marine life typically is.
Staying steady and calm allows the turtle to feel safe to come up as close as to you as they feel comfortable and swim away when they're ready. Many times the creatures we see are curious about us, and want to check us out too!
Plus, these types of interactions are far more rewarding π
What was your favorite encounter under the sea? We'd love to hear! π
