The history of my homeland the United States of America intersects with that of Albania in the courtyard of the Fortress of Gjirokastra, where the remains of a Cold War aircraft are found. 65 years ago this Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star landed at old Rinias Airport in Tirana. Was it as the US said a simple error by the pilot lost in fog while searching for his destination in Italy? Was it forced to land by the Albanian Air Force as Enver Hoxha’s Communists claimed? The pilot returned to the states shortly after but the plane never left. Instead, it was used as additional propaganda between these two countries that thankfully have been the best of friends for the last 3 decades since Communism collapsed. Hoxha had the plane moved to Gjirokastra in the mid-70s and the photo shows that at that time it was still intact. Today it looks like a casualty of war, looking forlornly out from the parapet of the ancient castle above the stone-clad roofs arranged below.
