The Vjosa River in Albania is one of Europe’s last living wild rivers. Along its entire course of over 270 kilometers it is untamed and free flowing and characterized by beautiful canyons, braided river sections, islands, oxbows and meandering stretches. In some areas the riverbed expands over more than 2 km in width. However, what makes this river really outstanding internationally is the fact, that almost all its tributaries are free-flowing and intact as well, creating a living rivers network that is without par in Europe.
The main source of the Vjosa River is in Greek territory near the village of Vouvoussa (the ancient name of Vjosa). On its first 80 kilometres the river flows through Greece and is named Aoos. In Albania it turns into Vjosa. The meandering lower part opens up into a valley with extensive wetlands, providing habitats for spawning fish, migratory birds and others. Finally, it drains into the sea just north of the Narta lagoon – one of the biggest and ecologically richest lagoons of Albanian and as such designated as Managed Nature Reserve. The Vjosa is draining a total area of 6,700 km² in Albania and Greece and discharges an average of 204 m³/s into the Adriatic Sea.

Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park is only of its type in Albania. Located in Vlora area, the park contains outstanding wilderness and natural values that are essential for promoting a sustainable tourism development model. In order to promote this model, the Regional Administration for Protected Areas has organized a diving event in Gjiri i Varkave (Boat’s Bay) in the area of Karaburun Peninsula.
Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park encompasses a rich ecosystem of Posidonia Oceanica meadows, a seagrass species that is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. This seagrass also serves as habitat for other marine species that are included in the IUCN Red List. The area is also inhabited or visited by species such as sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, various types of fish and the monk seal.
On the other hand, ecotourism can be integrated into the sustainable development, thus offering the chance for tourist activities that don’t have a negative impact on the environment.
The park covers an area of 12,428 hectares.
It includes numerous landmarks such as Sazani Island, which recently has been opened for visitors and tourists, beautiful sites like Shen Vasili bay, Shen Jani Bay, and Grama Bay, and Haxhi Alia Cave, one of the largest caves in Albania.
In the meantime, there is a thriving marine life underwater and divers can enjoy exploring the underwater world.
Meanwhile, avid hikers and trekkers can walk the network of hiking routes in the peninsula. Several routes have been marked and two new trails are expected to be marked on Wednesday.

A stone bridge arcs over a winding stretch of brilliantly blue-green water. Built in the Middle Ages, it has been letting people cross the sulfur-rich river since the days of the Ottoman Empire. Warm water rushes beneath it, providing a relaxing treat for those who visit.Near the bridge, you’ll find the the Benja Thermal Baths, born from the geothermal waters near Përmet, Albania. The heated water flows down the river unless it gets diverted into one of the several human-made pools. They’re a splendid spot for a hot soak on a crisp, cool day.

Some say the baths have healing properties. As such, you may see some locals arriving to bathe there and reap the water’s alleged health benefits. The pools are off the beaten path, though, so you can still expect a fair amount of privacy.

The area surrounding the old bridge and the hot springs is stunning. Walking atop the stone overpass is a great way to soak in the views. The river carves through a beautiful gorge, backdropped by distant mountains that stretch toward the sky. Small waterfalls rush and ripple along some parts of the river. It’s a gorgeous spot to camp—if you don’t mind spending the night breathing in air saturated with the stinky stench of sulphur.

BUNK’ART 1: EXPLORE ENVER HOXHA’S FIVE FLOOR UNDERGROUND BUNKER.
Ever wondered what lengths a communist ruler would go to amid the constant paranoia & the threat of the enemy haunting them? Well, Bunk’Art 1 is five levels & 3000m2 of underground protective bunker, the product of Enver Hoxha’s fear of nuclear fallout.

Albania’s landscape is heavily punctuated with the aftermath of Enver Hoxha’s communist regime, most notably in the shape of 700,000 bunkers dispersed throughout the country. For a long time, the Albanian population saw their presence as something entirely normal. This was until the sinking realisation that such a costly defense method, and one against an enemy that never came, was more than just unique, it was disturbing. Tourists and journalists alike, stand in awe of these strange objects, sticking out of Albania’s stunning landscape like mushrooms cropping up after rainfall.

One of the most up-and-coming places to visit in Albania is Pogradec, which can be found on the shores of Lake Ohrid in the east of the nation.

Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake in the Balkan region and while the Macedonian side of the lake is more popular, Albania’s shore is definitely on the up.

Pogradec is famous for its rich folklore, while its Puppet Theater Festival is one of the most interesting events on Albania’s tourism calendar.

The highlight of the Albanian Riviera is perhaps the Ksamil Islands, a remote group of three small islands located just off the coast, accessible only by boat from the small town of Ksamil.

Part of the larger Butrint National Park, the Ksamil Islands are a fantastic example of Albania at its most untouched and unspoiled.

For the most breathtaking scenery in the entire Balkans, visiting Lake Koman in Albania should be on anyone’s bucket list. Often described as one of the world’s great boat trips, the journey takes visitors from the hydro-electric dam at Koman to the port of Fierza.
While the locals that use the boat regularly may now take the rugged beauty of the Albanian mountains for granted, any first-time visitor will find the sights from the Lake Koman Ferry to be truly jaw-dropping. The trip on the ferry is also a great opportunity to see what life is like for many Albanians in remote areas.

Located in the middle of the Llogara National Park, the road travels to over 1,000 metres above sea level and the scenery will take your breath away.

At the top of the pass there is a good range of restaurants, which are ideal places to enjoy some of the most stunning sights in Albania.

Llogara National Park itself is home to animals such as the golden eagle, European wildcat and fallow deer.

A drive from Tirana to Saranda taking in the Llogara Pass should take a few hours, but allow plenty of extra time to stop and take lots of photographs.

Tour of the Ionian coast
08:00 - 11:30: Transfer to Vlora and Llogara National Park
Vlora is situated in the southwestern part of Albania, exactly where the two seas meet: the most southern part of Adriatic Sea and northern part of Ionian Sea. The most ancient traces of Vlora date back to the period of antiquity. Since VI century B.C. four towns were built up in Vlora bay: Oricum, Kanina, Triporti and Aulona. The most ancient traces of civilization belong to Oricum, which still keeps the old ruins of the city. Oricum, with its fortified walls, played a very important role in the war between Cesar and Pompey. The most significant historical event for Vlora is the Proclamation of Independence on 28 November 1912. After a short walk through the city we will be transferred to the Llogara National Park, where a short coffee break is planned. The park represents one of the most amazing places in Albania. With an area of 1020 ha, Llogara is covered with everlasting greenery. A special natural element and very typical for Llogara is the Flag Pine (Pisha Flamur). 11:30 - 12:00: Coffee break
12:00 - 13:00: Drive to Dhërmi and visit of the monastery of Panaja
The old village is set into the mountain and is one of the oldest and most characteristic villages on the Ionian Coast. We will visit the monastery of Panaja with its XV century church and engravings.

The first stop is at the Pirate's Cave. The cave is more than 30 m long, 8 m wide and 10-12 m high. A stone block pillar divides the entry into two parts. We will enter the cave, if the sea is calm. The tour continues in the direction of Ngjipe.

Gjirokastra and Antigonea Tour

A short city tour to see and to learn more about their history and main interesting sight as Gjirokaster and Antigonea city. Get much more of this city tour to learn and te see more about it.
Meet the group at hotel lobby. Depart for a daily tour to the main interesting sight as Gjirokastra & Antigonea, ancient city.
Gjirokastra - the "Stone City", situated in the southern part of Albania only 1 hour far from Saranda city, on the eastern slope of mountain Mali i Gjere. It is a commercial center in South Albania, it produces foodstuffs, leather, and textiles. There are several 18th-century mosques and churches and an old citadel (rebuilt in the 19th cent.) in the town. Dating probably from the 4th cent., Gjirokastër passed to the Turks in the 15th cent. It was captured (1811) by Ali Pasha and was the center (late 1800s) of anti-Turkish resistance. In World War II it was occupied by Italy, Greece, and Germany in succession. What strikes the visitors most in Gjirokastra are its typical and characteristic houses which resemble little fortresses, clustered one above the other. Their exterior combines roughness with the beauty of windows, small rooms and light pillars supporting the roofs protruding from the walls. The most attractive feature is the stone which has been masterfully elaborated by the builders. Once Gjirokastra has been called the "city of one thousand steps" or "the stone city".
