Opera and Ballet Theatre, Yerevan
The Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the most outstanding landmarks of in Armenia. Located in the heart of Yerevan, it was designed by the architect Alexander Tamanian, who connected two auditoriums in a uniform semicircular building in unusual manner. While building this artistic monument, Tamanian used the best traditions of medieval Armenian architecture while stylizing traditional national ornaments.
The theater part of the building was finished in 1939. In 1963, the big hall of the philharmonic society was added. The building in its present condition appeared after the reconstruction of 1980. The theatre capacity is 1,260 people; the philharmonic society hall can hold 1,400. Both halls have the shape of an amphitheatre and are distinguished by magnificent acoustics. The project was awarded the "Grand Prix" at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937.
The square in front of the Opera building is decorated by sculptures of the poet O. Tumanian and the composer A. Spendiarian. The square in front of the Opera House has a statue of Aram Khachaturian, and one of the halls in the theater itself is also named after him.
Since it was opened, the Armenian National Opera & Ballet Theatre has performed more than 200 different operas and ballets by Armenian, Russian and Western European composers. The theatre company has performed in more than 20 countries, e.g. in Russia, Spain, Lebanon, United States, Greece, Germany. In 1956, the theatre received the status of National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Historical of Armenia! 👇

💜 Tushpa was the 9th-century BC capital of Urartu,
💛 Later became known as Van or Tushpa-Van.
💙 The ancient ruins are located just west of Van and east of Lake Van (now in Turkey).
🧡 The fortress of Van is a massive stone fortification built by the ancient kingdom of Urartu and held from the 9th to 7th centuries BC. It overlooks Tushpa, and is the largest example of this kind of complex. A number of similar fortifications were built throughout the Urartian kingdom, usually cut into hillsides and outcrops in places where modern-day Armenia, Turkey and Iran meet.
💜 In the trilingual Behistun inscription, carved in the order of Darius the Great of Persia, the country referred to as in Babylonian is called Armenia in Old Persian.

Shall we marry?

Armenian wedding traditions and customs
Armenians are known for their faithful commitment to certain customs and traditions. As such, weddings here are joyous and formal occasions filled with well-preserved traditions. Historically, the celebration lasted for a week, but this has now changed.
Because 93% of Armenians are part of the Armenian Apostolic Church, most wedding ceremonies are dedicated to God and the church. If you’re going to an Armenian wedding, or you’re marrying into an Armenian family, here are some of the most common traditions and customs you should know about:
1. The Khosk-Kap
It is respectable for the groom to ask the bride’s family for her hand in marriage before he proposes. This ‘asking of the hand’ is called a Khosk -Kap and entails a formal dinner organized by the families of both the bride and groom-to-be. It is usually held at the bride’s house and the families are expected to bring floral arrangements, chocolate and Armenian Cognac. Tea is served at the start, but no one should drink it until the bride’s family has agreed to the marriage. If agreed, both sides of the family then talk to one another and start to plan the wedding.
2. The Engagement Ceremony
Engagement parties are usually not an essential; however in the Armenian culture, it is a necessity! During the engagement soiree; a ring, a bracelet, earrings, a red dress and a veil would be put into a tray in front of the groom to present to his bride. Each item symbolizes a vow that the bride is going to take. The bracelet on the wrist indicates she will be faithful to her husband and the red dress and veil is a promise that she will be a true bride to the man she is marrying.
3. The Pillow Sharing
A popular Armenian saying that is used regularly is “May you grow old on one pillow.” This is a way to wish that the bride and groom will stay together forever and stitching this on a pillow as a wedding favor is extremely common in the Armenian culture.
4. The Red Dress
Traditionally, Armenian brides wore a red silk dress with a red and green cardboard crown. The crown is shaped like wings and covered with feathers which symbolizes a dove. Doves are an important part of an Armenian wedding, with these birds released during the reception to show love and fortune throughout the newlywed’s married years. The color palette of red and green is a symbol of life and sacrifice to your groom, making it the perfect palette for the bride-to-be.

Armenian Church in Israel
The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem (Առաքելական Աթոռ Սրբոց Յակովբեանց Յերուսաղեմ), known as the Armenian Patriarchate of Saint James as well is located in the Armenian Quarter in Jerusalem. During World War I, around 25.000 million survivors of the Armenian Genocide received shelter in the Armenian Convent in Jerusalem. Most Armenians in Jerusalem live in and around the Patriarchate at the St. James Monastery, which occupies most of the Armenian Quarter of the Old City. What’s interesting is that the Jerusalem Armenian community uses the Old Julian calendar, unlike the rest of the Armenian Church which use the Gregorian calendar.
Moreover, the Armenian Apostolic Church is officially recognized under Israel's confessional system, for the self-regulation of status issues, such as marriage and divorce. The Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem recognizes the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin as having pre-eminent supremacy in all spiritual matters.
Bert Vaux identifies two subgroups of Armenians:
1. k‘ałak‘ac‘is ("citizens" or "city dwellers") are the indigenous Armenian-speaking inhabitants of the quarter. They live outside the monastery walls, and attend the Church of the Holy Archangels (Hreshtakapetats).
2. k‘ałt‘agans ("[im]migrants") are ancestors of Armenians from various parts of the Ottoman Empire who moved to Jerusalem following the 1915 genocide. They attend services at the cathedral of St. James.
Armenian churches in Israel:
• Cathedral of St. James (Սուրբ Յակոբեանց վանք, Surb Hakobeants vank) is thought to have been founded in the 4th century, but the current structure dates to the 12th century.
• St. Toros Church (Սուրբ Թորոս եկեղեցի, Surb T'oros yekeğetsi). According to local tradition, the church was built between 1270 and 1289 by Hethum I, the Armenian King of Cilicia in memory of his son, Toros, who was killed in a battle. The church was renovated to its current state in 1727.
• Church of the Holy Archangels (Սրբոց Հրեշտակապետաց եկեղեցի, Srbots Hreštakapetats yekeğetsi; Deir Al Zeitoun) was founded in the 12th century probably on the ruins of an ancient church in the 4th century.

Did you know why Armenians celebrate Christmas on 6 January?
25/12/2020

Did you know why Armenians celebrate Christmas on 6 January?

Merry Christmas to Catholics!!!

Why do Armenians celebrate Christmas on January 6th, while people of the West on December 25th?

Armenians belong to the Apostolic Church which celebrates Christmas on January 6th. People from the West belong to the Catholic Church which celebrates on December 25th.

In the past, Christmas and Baptism were celebrated together in Bethlehem and Jordan respectively on January 6th, but because Bethlehem and Jordan were so far apart, people could not visit both places.

According to Roman Catholic sources, the date was changed from January 6th to December 25th in order to override a pagan feast dedicated to the birth of the Sun which was celebrated on December 25th. At the time Christians used to continue their observance of these pagan festivities. In order to undermine and subdue this pagan practice, the church hierarchy designated December 25th as the official date of Christmas and January 6th as the feast of Epiphany. However, Armenia was not effected by this change for the simple fact that there were no such pagan practices in Armenia, on that date, and the fact that the Armenian Church was not a satellite of the Roman Church. Thus, remaining faithful to the traditions of their forefathers, Armenians have continued to celebrate Christmas on January 6th until today.
