ARMENIANS OPENED THE FIRST EUROPEAN COFFEE HOUSES

- Coffee came via Arabia to Armenia.

- Armenian merchants from the Ottoman Empire opened the first coffee houses in Europe.

- In the late 17th century, Café Daniel Moser was opened by Johannes Diodato in Vienna.

- In 1672 Pascal opened the first cafés in Paris, later also in London, Venice and Holland.

- Prague’s first café, “Zlatého Hada” or “Golden Serpent”, was opened by Deomatus Damajian or Dajamanus.

- At that time, Armenian fashion was used to decorate the buildings of the coffee houses.

- The origins of the word coffee – in Armenian “sorsch” or “sorch” – exist since 1787 at the latest.

- However, whether it is a combination of „sev chur“ or „sev tschur“, which literally means “black water“, is not verified.

- Another theory to the word origin is based on the noise when brewing or slurping a hot drink.

Symphony Of Stones

Symphony of Stones or Basalt Organ as some call it, is one of the most astonishing creations of nature in Armenia. The place got its name since it creates an impression of a huge musical instrument. The rocks have the appearance of long vertical pillars of hexagonal shape, which is associated with the church organ. It is a mesmerizing natural landmark that attracts both locals’ and tourists’ attention. It is hard to believe that the is not carved by humans.

Located in the depths of Lori province, you’ll find the Akhtala fortress which was built in the late 10th century. The walls of the fortress were built on top of Bronze and Iron Age foundations by the Kyurikids branch of Bagratunis. This branch is said to have originated from Gurgen (Kyurikeh) Bagratuni. Under him and his brothers the Bagratuni Kingdom of Armenia reached the peak of its prosperity.

The Akhtala fortress is considered to be one of the most notable architectural monuments in Armenia. It was built from blue basalt and was considered to be unapproachable by the enemies.
