History of the Armenian Church & Religion
was brought to the kingdom of Armenia by two of Jesus' Apostles, Thaddeus and Bartholomew in first century A.D.
became the national religion in 301 A.D.
St. Gregory the Enlightener was imprisoned for years, and upon his release he converted King Tiridates III, by healing the king of an incurable affliction through the power of God. After, the king proclaimed Christianity the official religion of Armenia, making it the first country with a national Christian church, the pair helped spread the religion.
was one of a group of nuns who lived in Rome under the direction of their superior, Gayane, around 284-305 A.D. When Roman Emperor Diocletian tried to force the beautiful Hripsime to marry him, the nuns fled to Armenia. There, the Armenian king, Drtad, fell in love with Hripsime's beauty and decided she should be his wife. But the nun refused to break her vows to God by marrying the king. King Drtad tortured Gayane, trying to get her to permit Hripsime to marry him, but Gayane refused to give in. Eventually King Drtad had Gayane, Hripsime, and the 32 nuns tortured and killed because they chose their faith and devotion to God over the wishes of a king.
Why is Mt. Ararat important to Armenians?
. Ararat, now in Turkey, but once part of the ancient Armenian kingdom, is traditionally known as the resting place of Noah's Ark.
the 5th century, Christian worship in Armenia was conducted in Greek or Syriac, since there was no Armenian alphabet, hence no written language. In 404 A.D., St. Mesrob (at that time a monk) completed an alphabet of 36 letters. His objective was to translate the Bible into Armenian, and the golden age of classical Armenian literature began shortly thereafter.
Muron is oil from extracts of more than 40 different kinds of plants that is blessed by the Catholicos once every seven years.
is the spiritual home of the Armenian Church?
The Armenian Church is headquartered in the Monastery of Holy Etchmiadzin in the Armenian city of Etchmiadzin.
Catholicos is the leader of the Armenian Church; currently it is His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. He is the 132nd Catholicos.

Noraduz - one of the few settlements of the «ashkharh» (province) retains its name from the ancient times. Here in the XVI century was the residence of the Armenian Meliks (princes).
In the center of the village the church St. Astvatsatsin was erected. The inscription on it says that the church was built by Sahak from Gegharqunik of large blocks of pure cut stone; it represents a type of «domed hall». In the XIV century the church was devastated by the Persians and rebuilt in the XV century.
The fence of St. Astvatsatsin comprises many ancient khachkars, the oldest of which, judging from the inscription refers to the year 996.
On the southern outskirts of Noraduz there is a small cross-domed church of St. Gregory (X century), in its eastern wall there is an inscription left by the architect Hercules. In the XIII century two small sacristies were additionally built

of Ughtasar
has a wealth of fascinating rock art, little known or understood but worthy of wider domestic and international recognition. Rock art is one of the most important and direct ways of linking our modern world to that of our remote ancestors. We can never hope, of course, to fully understand the complex meanings of the signs and symbols but the carved figures provide enticing clues to the perceptions and concerns of their creators several thousand years ago.
Ughtasar is a major rock art site located in the caldera of an extinct volcano in the Syunik Mountains of southern Armenia. In a spectacular landscape bounded by a rim of craggy peaks and rounded hills the site is home to almost a thousand carved rocks bearing abstract and figurative motifs pecked millennia ago onto the surfaces of basalt boulders disgorged long before as streams of lava. At 3300 metres above sea level the site is snowbound for nearly nine months of the year yet supports a rich and varied ecosystem of flora and fauna including bears, wolves, foxes and wild boar.
Ughtasar Rock Art Project, initiated in 2009, involves a systematic survey of the petroglyphs and other archaeological features, in their immediate landscape context. The main aim of the project’s largely self-funded team is to seek a deeper understanding of the significance of Ughtasar to the people who created the petroglyphs and of the ways in which they ‘marked’ the landscape of this unique place within Armenia’s rich cultural and archaeological heritage. The project is using both traditional and innovative methods of recording, analysis and interpretation and brings together archaeologists, art historians and other specialists from Armenia, the UK, Japan and the USA, together with an enthusiastic group of Armenian students and volunteers.
There is an urgent need to document and protect the site. Many of the carvings are eroding in the harsh climatic conditions, exacerbated in recent years by visitors walking over some of the fragile carved surfaces. Attempts must be made to forestall further damage to the petroglyphs and to the delicate balance of the rich ecosystem within the caldera.

armeniaca
Prunus armeniaca "Armenian plum", the most commonly cultivated apricot species, also called ansu apricot Siberian apricot, Tibetan apricot,is a species of Prunus, classified with the plum in the subgenus Prunus. The native range is somewhat uncertain due to its extensive prehistoric cultivation, though almost certainly somewhere in Asia. It is extensively cultivated in many countries and has escaped into the wild in many places.
The origin of the species is disputed. It was known in Armenia during ancient times, and has been cultivated there for so long, it is often thought to have originated there. Its scientific name Prunus armeniaca (Armenian plum) derives from that assumption. For example, De Poerderlé, writing in the 18th century, asserted, "Cet arbre tire son nom de l'Arménie, province d'Asie, d'où il est originaire et d'où il fut porté en Europe ..." ("this tree takes its name from Armenia, province of Asia, where it is native, and whence it was brought to Europe ...").An archaeological excavation at Garni in Armenia found apricot seeds in an Eneolithic-era site.Despite the great number of varieties of apricots that are grown in Armenia today (about 50), according to Vavilov its center of origin would be the Chinese region, where the domestication of apricot would have taken place. Other sources say that the apricot was first cultivated in India in about 3000 BC

is located in Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. It takes around 2 hours and a half to get there from capital Yerevan.
The buses leave from bus station and the ticket price costs more or less $4.
Jermuk has unique climate, and it is explained by the 2500-3000 meter high mountain chains that surround the city as well as the gorge of Arpa River, which serves as a gate for the air flows coming from Araks Calley. The city stands out with warm and mild summers and sunny and colorful falls. Especially splendid is the winter, when everything is covered with sparkling snow.
Considering the city’s climate conditions, the beautifully expressed seasons as well its significance and location not in vain prominent Armenian writer William Saroyan was so impressed by it that he said Armenia is a real paradise and its high, skyscraping crown is Jermuk city.
Jermuk waterfall that falls from a height of 70 meters into the gorge of Arpa River is a true miracle of Armenian Highlands. It reminds of hair flowing freely and therefore locals call it “Mermaid’s hair.”
The legend regarding the waterfall has it that there was a princess whose beauty was so capturing that many princes wanted to marry her. But the princess’s heart belonged to the son of a shepherd, so she was refusing everyone. To meet her beloved the princess was throwing a long rope into the gorge of Arpa River for him to climb it and finally meet. When the girl’s father learned about it he cursed her saying that if they meet again then let she turn into a mermaid and never come out of the water. The desire to meet each other was stronger than the fear from the curse and the girl threw her long hair into the gorge and at that moment they turned into a waterfall. And that’s why people call it “Mermaid’s hair.”

The Legend of Khor Virap

According to legend, the place where this monastery fortress stands today used to be occupied by the ancient city of Artashat, the former capital of Armenia. On the hill where the church is now built, was a prison pit for those on death row – Khor Virap*. It is connected with the story of Christianity in Armenia.
King Trdat, faithful to the pagan gods, confined Gregory the Illuminator into this black pit for his Christian sermons. The pit was swarming with snakes and poisonous insects; it emanated unbearable stench of rotting corpses. Bound hand and foot, it was easier for Gregory to die than to live in the company of those terrible creatures.
Fourteen years had passed. One morning, after the massacre of the Christian martyrs, King Trdat fell victim to a strange illness. He slipped off his chariot, was overtaken by fury, began to gnaw at his own body, and then turned into a pig.
Trdat’s sister saw an angel in her dream and she told the courtiers: “The king’s madness will not stop until you release Gregory.”
At first, the courtiers did not believe her. But when the dream came for the fifth time, they decided to go to Artashat and lowered a rope to the bottom of the pit.
“Gregory!” they called. “If you are alive, come out! The God to whom you pray commanded us to free you!”
Gregory grabbed the rope and they dragged him out into the light. The preacher’s skin looked as black as the skin of an Ethiopian. He was washed, dressed, and taken to the king. The preacher knelt and began to pray fervently asking God to heal Trdat. Soon the king returned to human form.
After that Trdat turned into the most loyal and dedicated supporter of Christianity.
Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion. It happened in the year 301 AD at the exact place where the prison pit had been located the Khor Virap monastery was built.

has a very rich nature.
In this small land are growing more then 3200 varieties of vegetation of which 120 grow only in the territory of Armenia. Even many varieties have armenian names.
The animal world is also very diverse. There are about 12 000 types. Many of them are also unique for the Armenian natural world.Armenian nature played a major role in the history of Armenian people. In the same way as in the days of the Flood it has become a cradle of formation of a new humanity later it helped people in the days of struggle against cruel enemies.
Due to the high mountains and deep gorges Armenian castles were unassailable. Rivers overflowed when enemy passed through them and lakes with their brilliance made attacking soldiers blind. Many songs and poems are dedicated to the Armenian nature where it is obvious, how it is in harmony with centuries-old history and culture of Armenian people.
