This year Armenia will celebrate “The Museum Night” on May 20.

One night a year the museums of Armenia and many countries of the world are open to welcome visitors all night long inviting them to take part in the festival “The Museum Night”. The idea of the festival belongs to the Ministry of Culture of France. It is held on May 14 till midnight and has been celebrated in Armenia since 2005.
“The Museum Night” converts to the International Museum Day on May 18. May 18 was announced the International Museum Day during the symposium of the International Committee of Museums (ICOM) held in Moscow and Saint Petersburg in 1977. A year later this day was already celebrated in more than 150 countries.

On the Museum Night and the International Museum Day all the museums of Armenia work as free pass. On these days various events are held, such as film screening, exhibitions, morning performances, which make the festival more colorful and challenge everyone to integrate in the important cultural event.

Amberd is a fortress complex with a church built on the slopes of Mt. Aragats at 2,300 meters above sea level in the XI-XIII centuries. The road leading up to it on Mt. Aragats is virtually uninhabited and has gently sloping hills with the occasional shepherd and beekeeper. many wildflowers and great views. Amberd is a tall fortress built on a rise in between two streams. The church, built in 1026 by the architect Vagram Pakhlavuni, is slightly down the hill from the fortress, nearer to where the two streams join.
Bring a lunch along because it is a perfect spot to relax, go back in time, and catch your breath. As well there were no places to stop for food anywhere near Amberd.
Amberd stands on a rocky eminence, again one of the impregnable fortresses of medieval Armenia. The princely castle of Amberd was built in the 11th to 13th centuries. A two-storeyed structure fitted with a majestic staircase, the castle is protected by walls with inclined towers. The baths were constructed outside the palace in the 13th century. The church was built in 1026 by Prince Vahram Pahlavuni. It belongs to the cupola'd hall type. The exterior architecture is simple and expressive, crowned by an umbrella shaped cupola.

Number 3.
Drink the famous Armenian coffee
The difference between Armenian coffee and others lies in its preparation method. For Armenians, they’ll usually crush the coffee beans, add water to it, and then heat it in a special Armenian coffee pot where it’s narrower at the top. Once the coffee mixture start to rise and foam, it’s ready for drinking! Thick Armenian coffee without sugar and a thick layer of residue at the base of the cup, just the way they like it. You have to try it!

Fun fact: Our guide shared with us that some ladies could even tell their future by looking at the stains left behind on the inner side of the cup by the thick coffee mixture!

P.S. Number 4 you will see from 2 hours :)

Number 2. Indulge in the delicious local cuisine
We had a great opportunity to dine at Cross of Unity in Echimiazin, which was a social enterprise cafe where children get to attend art classes for free and people with disabilities get to work there to earn a living. They also own a restaurant that offers excellent local food such as Morash (shredded chicken mixed with green peas) and Kyufta (handmade sausage beef, grains and sauteed mushrooms). Armenians love to eat bread (Lavash), which is a thin layer of flat chewy bread that’s made from flour, salt and water and baked in an underground Tonir (earth oven). The Lavash can be kept for 1 year without turning bad. So usually the local women will bake the Lavash in bulk and then store them to eat slowly for the next few months. Armenians cannot imagine having their meals without bread! (Even if they’re eating rice, they’ll need to have bread with it too!)

Fun fact: The difference between Armenian way of baking their bread lies in the Tonir that’s situated underground instead of on the ground like how Central Asia or Iran does it.

P.S. from 2 hours you will see the number 3 :)

Top Things To Do In Armenia

Number 1
Be awed by the beautiful ancient churches & ruins
Armenia was said to be the first country to have adopted Christianity as its state religion back in the 301AD (more than 1,700 years ago!). A lot of these churches built back then have been restored and today, you’ll be able to visit the sites of these awe-inspiring millennium old monasteries. You can imagine the immense amount of rich history of these churches that dates way back into the past, it was certainly an eye-opener for us.

P.S. from 2 hours you will see the number 2 :)
