The empanada is said to originate from Spain, Portugal or even might have been a moor’s legacy. Its name comes from the Spanish verb empanar, which means to coat or wrap in bread. On stores and restaurants besides the most common and traditional, baked meat empanada, you will find a range of fillings. From basic ham and cheese or onions and cheese to more gourmet style like lamb and mushrooms. Also, the fried empanadas which are not as common but are very tasty.

They are practical and inexpensive. In different regions of Argentina you can also find local fillings like shrimp, wild berries or yacaré caiman meat.

También hay empanadas fritas que si bien son menos populares son muy sabrosas.

The piche (Zaedyus pichiy), dwarf armadillo or pygmy armadillo is a native armadillo to Argentina. This, the only armadillo to hibernate and native to Patagonia build up considerable fat reserves before entering their winter burrows, where they remain from May to August. During hibernation, their body temperature drops from its normal value of about 35 °C (95 °F) to just 14 °C (57 °F).

Piches are solitary and diurnal. They dig burrows in sandy soil, which they use for shelter from extremes of weather. The burrows have a dome-shaped entrance and a single passage that can reach several metres in length, before terminating in a bare, unlined, resting chamber.

El único armadillo del mundo en hibernar, construye reservas de grasa ante la llegada del invierno como hacen otras especies de animales también. Desde Mayo a Agosto entran en su periodo de descanso, y su temperatura corporal cae desde su valor normal de 35 °C (95 °F) a solo 14 °C (57 °F).

Los Piches son solitarios y nocturnos. Construyen guaridas en la arena que usan para protegerse del clima hostil de la region. Estas guaridas tienen una entrada en forma de domo y un camino que luego de varios metros llega a su lugar de descanso.

The Río Pinturas Canyon is home to several archaeological sites where 9000 years ago gatherer-hunters got together following the herds of Guanacos to establish camp. On top of the canyon, famous "Cueva de las Manos" (Hand Caves) reveals a sacred place declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Managed by the Rewilding and Tompkins foundation, there is a new protected area that is getting more and more attention from international travelers seeking solitude, wildlife watching and peace.

To reach the canyon, 35km of gravel is needed, to get away from National Road 40. The site is located 54 km south of Perito Moreno and 74 km north of Bajo Caracoles. We have already several road trips planned that visit this area, but will be happy to customize one for you. Contact us direct!
El Cañadón del Río Pinturas guarda a ambas márgenes de su río varios sitios arqueológicos que datan de 9000 años. Cazadores recolectores seguían a los guanacos por esta zona y establecían campamentos temporarios. Sobre el cañón yace la famosa "Cueva de las Manos" que descubre un lugar sagrado declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.

Establecido por la Fundación Rewilding & Tompkins, hay una área protegida que está recibiendo cada año más atención internacional y es buscada por viajeros que esperan solitud, avistaje de fauna y paz.

The is a rectangular carrying cloth used in traditional communities in the Andes. It is handmade and popular among women in the high altitud Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.

They are very colorful! And can be made of woven fabrics of Llama, Alpaca or Sheep and are used to carry children, timber, food... also to sit on or even for extra warmth. The Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco), also known as the common toucan or giant toucan, is the largest and probably the best known species in the toucan family. It is found in semi-open habitats throughout a large part of North Eastern Argentina.
