From a blank sheet to impressive pieces

Great artists turn the blank sheet into art. This passionate journey of immersion, setting aside one's own thoughts, emptying oneself, and perceiving everything that happens without our intervention, to make way for a new creation.

Artist Eduardo Basualdo likes to imagine the idea that the blank sheet opens. As if that frame of the sheet were a portal, into which you can enter with your eyes but also projecting your body.

His work is a dialogue with space in physical or material and poetic terms, organized from issues related to mental space and real three-dimensional physical space.

From a young age, he found refuge in drawing. Within a large family, drawing was like a place of intimacy, of singularity. His installations reflect the genealogy established between art and childhood games. Those games with his siblings, shelters, dark rooms, wooden boxes, containers, all that organization of the world, the symbolic and inner, projected into possible space, with the impulse to organize three-dimensional space, sensations, and internal thoughts.

This is Eduardo Basualdo’s work, an outstanding local artist, trained in Fine Arts at the National Institute of Visual Arts (UNA), his talent has led him to exhibit in renowned institutions around the world, such as the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Venice Biennale. His works are present in public and private collections worldwide, from the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. to the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires.

He is also exhibiting like many spectacular artists at Arte BA this week.

On our explorations of Volcán Galán, at over 5000 meters, we came across these elegant flamingos. The contrast between their grace and the arid landscape is a sight to behold.

From Barreal in San Juan province, in the comfort of our vehicle, we started by wading the Rio los Patos continued by forcing our low Subaru into the impossible hike of the Andes up to Las Hornillas and los Manantiales (where we enjoyed the great steaks made on our “disco”).
Colours were just an unexpected palette going from bright reds to a deep dark burgundy, contrasting with the black of the condors at flight. Here, the massiveness (and beauty) of the Andes is jaw-dropping and the mountains enclose you in a tight and profound hug.
It is impossible to get your mind around the fact: the Ejercito de los Andes from the hand of General San Martin, crossed these peaks over 200 hundred years ago in a heroic attempt to liberate our neighboring countries, achieving the definite expulsion of the Spanish from the region.
Our humble homage to commemorate General San Martin’s death celebrated today.

In love with these masks of the Chané people, a small indigenous group with only 1,862 people remaining. Most of them live in seven communities in the San Martin department of Salta province.

The Chané go into the forest to look for wood to carve the masks for the celebration of the Arete, which is celebrated when the taperigua flowers bloom in the forest, until their flowers wither, for about 40 days.

These ceremonial masks, known as aña-aña, hold a profound significance, representing the essence of ancestral spirits, their identity. They serve as guardians, whispered to by the masqueraders to safeguard the families they adorn.

The Arete is prepared with musical pieces by instrumental groups. The masqueraders cover their heads, hands and feet so that no one can recognize them. They also wear large ponchos . When the time comes, the celebration begins with the instructions and harangues of the leader. During several days the big carnival is extended, where people dance and drink.

The masks stand as a timeless symbol of Chané artistry, preserving a rich heritage for generations to come. They used to be thrown away after the Arete but now they can be purchased.

EARTH- IT IS A TRULY HONOR TO BE HERE

I can’t find a better way to honor the earth than bringing to mind the organic products we recently tasted on our trip to San Juan. These are products with a local identity and overflowing with character, made by the hands of those who fully dedicate themselves to working the land in various ways, who live among the furrows, tend to the fields, listen to and understand the messages of nature: the seasons, the rainy periods, the planting days, and the harvest times.

These producers from the Calingasta Valley shared their knowledge with us, prompting us to recognize the worthiness of the land reflected in their organic products. Products that carry in their genes years of sacrifice, of taking risks, and above all, of listening to everything the land has to say. They are the real land whisperers.

Through the fields of .mi.campo Ricardo walked us along the richness of their herbs and spices, all cultivated without preservatives nor artificial additives. Their rose tea is a must among many other naturally scented options.

The production of the Valley continued to gift us local flavors. The “goat provoletita” from Quesos Yllia was to die for and my favorite. We learnt, to our amusement, that goat’s milk closely mirrors the composition of human milk.

We visited .barreal to taste the spectacular Pergola wine, made collaboratively with the local community from grapes belonging to various vineyards in town owned by neighbors and friends. The wine is aged in concrete barrels to preserve the terroir’s characteristics.

These dedicated products authentically reveal the character and culture of this Andean town, reclaiming the heritage of the valley’s ancient vineyards and traditional farming methods.

Thanks for sharing your meaningful way of empowering the identity of your soil and region.

Today we honor the earth through those men and women who dedicate themselves to agricultural culture, who live among the furrows, tend to the fields, listen to and understand the messages of nature: the seasons, rainy periods, planting days, and harvest times.

We thank these producers from the Calingasta Valley who opened their doors and shared their knowledge with us, allowing us to recognize the value of the land in their products.

At “The Mi Campo,” Ricardo took us on a tour of the fields of herbs and spices, which are cultivated without preservatives or artificial additives. We tried their rose tea, which is a must. Always in touch with their roots, they create products that respect, promote, and revalue the land.

We visited “Cara Sur” to taste the spectacular Pergola wine, made from grapes from various vineyards in the town, including those from neighbors, involving the community in this project. They produce mountain wines that reveal the character and culture of this Andean town, reclaiming the heritage of the valley’s ancient vineyards and traditional farming methods using concrete barrels to preserve the terroir’s characteristics.

Fortunately, the production of the Valley continued to gift us flavors. The “goat provoletita” from Quesos Yllia was my favorite. Cheeses that reflect the local identity without any preservatives. What they do is a product of the land, water, and environment of Calingasta. We learned the fascinating insight that goat’s milk closely mirrors the composition of human breast milk.

What a beautiful way to honor the earth.

Specialty Coffee in one of Buenos Aires’ most charming and sophisticated corners 🤍. Hidden above a petit wine bar and through a little wooden door, this tiny coffee hub prepares its elixirs in a variety of coffee making methods, with impressive quality beans from latin origin (for sale on the spot), carefully roasted and freshly grounded. I had a lovely chat with Carlos (last picture), their roast master from Venezuela, about this process, beans origins and his personal path with coffee. I adore wandering the streets of Buenos Aires with a curious eye and an adventurous vibe, becoming an explorer in my own city and unveiling this vibrant metropolis.

While walking the city on our last Scavenger Hunt of the year we passed by this emblematic gate. We thought it was a good photo to close this eventful 2023 of The Hummingbird Trip. We chanted in unison “Yo quiero a mi bandera”. It sprang from our soul to sing to our Argentina that never ceases to amaze us. We continue to discover places, people, stories to share daily with our clients eager to enter this restless culture.

On this location, there is today a cultural bar in homage to Lucca Prodan where you can listen not only to his music, but also to bands of later generations influenced by him. Today, his presence is alive and the messages written on the wood of the entrance door are proof of the mark that the leader of Sumo left on his followers.

We are excited to open new doors that will fuel our travels in the future.

UNTAMED “I grew up leafing through the scarce National Geographic magazines that from time to time reached the corner of our home in the mountains, I devoured them! My grandfather probably inspired by my increasing interest, gave me a little camera for my 12th birthday. Since then I never stopped taking pictures and I knew that was what I was going to do for the rest of my life.

Over 450 years, the 72 horses disembarked by Pedro de Mendoza in our lands, evolved and adjusted to the adversity and tribulations of these latitudes, and were seen some 50 years later in the Magellan Strait, their adapted descendants bred with new Spanish blood, and gave birth to the criollo horses.

Today herds of these wild horses can still be found in the forsaken plateaus of the provinces of Santa Cruz and Chubut, far from any human settlements in Patagonia. The untamed young horses, called baguales, remain small and furry most of the year, due to the lack of food and the harsh weather. They have developed an ability to survive.

Observing their behavior in nature led me to create this photographic series. The experience resembles that of spotting a herd of deer. Very different from observing the tamed animal we see in a ranch or corral.

As an artist I dialogue with the wind, powerful and constant, soul of this region. I pursue to tell incredible stories, obsessive, intrepid, civilized and not, ruthless or selfless; simple, complex; real. I seek to capture the light in the wild Patagonia and show, with its lack of climatic hospitality and its vast lands with scarce population, almost virgin, this touching scenery.”

Our old client Berry Maxon, an exceptionally skilled art director at an advertising agency, captured these photographs a few years ago during our tour in Buenos Aires using a Leica camera. Despite the passage of time, the remarkable quality of these photos endures, and we are grateful for Berry's generous gift of these treasured memories.

It was GOLD for the Pink Syrah from at this year’s world Gin Awards!

This gin from San Juan Province, creation of Eduardo Fuhr, was recognized as the best in the world in the flavored category in the competition that takes place in London.

With its unique identity, it has the color and characteristics of the Syrah wine from San Juan, where the brand is established.

Eduardo Fuhr selects grapes handpicked from his own family´s vineyards and uses only the skins during the maceration process and steam dragging, giving it the delicate pink color.

I can’t wait to taste it along with my wild flower syrups, lime and tonic, and hope for a unique delicious cocktail. We are proud how Argentina is gaining a place in the world of beverages not only with wine, or craft beer, but also with spirituous beverages such as this gin from San Juan.

In a town of gauchos and traditions, with a view of adobe houses sprinkled and animals wandering its streets, I encountered, around the corner the flavor that contained all the fascinating environment in a delicious pastry tart that pays homage to the fruits of that land.

From a distance you can see the friendly outline of the Café de los Pájaros with its lights and signs. As you get closer, you can hear the singing of the birds, leaning on the branches of its charming garden, that compel you to enter and taste its varied local delicacies.

I recommend the little table outside, to be embraced by the sounds of the environment and travel through the palate with their Guava tart.

This week that we honour our PACHAMAMA

There are as many ways to thank and bless the Pachamama as there are people in the world. Dig a shallow well in the yard to symbolize the mouth to feed the earth. Then place a pot in the well and, while giving personal thanks to Mother Earth, offer potatoes, corn or maize, coca leaves, a splash of liquor poured in the form of a cross, some incense, and chopped paper. Take a sip of one of the beverages offered to the earth and cover the well with a poncho. Share lunch with your family and celebrate Pachamama, and you will be doing it as in the norwester of Argentina.

The offering is a symbolic way in which man gives back to Pachamama what he has taken from her, in order to reestablish the reciprocity and balance between man and nature.

A one man town

Achango has its natural music, the breeze shakens the keys that hang from the branches of the abundant grove. Each key was hung by one of the thousands of travelers who came to this mystical and minuscule town. With each key, the door is opened to a wish, a request, a thank you. On the road between La Rioja and San Juan, an adobe gem stands: Achang: the single inhabited town.

In this lost corner lives a dedicated man, Don Abel, whose only mission is to watch over the protection and welfare of this humble town. In the middle of its cobblestone streets stands an ancestral church, built by the Jesuits in 1630, witness to the passage of time and countless stories.

Visitors, captivated by the magic of the place, deposit a key next to their deepest dreams, in a symbolic gesture that transcends time living their thoughtful personal mark.

When European expeditionaries sailed to South America at the beginning of the 19th. century they confronted an environment so hostile that their stay was almost unthinkable. The rough weather and the harsh conditions of the region made life impossible, and the Selk'nam and Yamana Indians - canoe Indians who inhabited the shores of the Beagle Channel - were violent towards foreigners.

The story took an unexpected turn when a group of explorers opted for a different strategy. Instead of trying to conquer or expel the indigenous people, they aimed to live in harmony with them. These pioneers realized that the natives' knowledge and experience of survival in the inhospitable territory of Tierra del Fuego was invaluable.

“El último confín de la Tierra”, published in 1948 by Lucas Bridges, an englishman who was born in the Ushuaia Mission in 1874, grew up among yaganes from whom he learned their language, legends and way of life, and later established relations with the Onas - nomadic hunters who inhabited the interior of the island - with whom he would become friends, advisors and defenders. At the age of 18, while his family returned to England, he decided to stay.

This unique book it's not a novel, it's the reality that imposes itself.

Today you can visit the Harberton ranch, founded in 1886 by the Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges, the first white man to live permanently in Tierra del Fuego.

On our way to the Galan Volcano in Catamarca, our local guide stopped to pay his respects to the Pachamama in an apacheta that appeared in the middle of the desolate landscape.

Recently, during the Milano Design Week in April, Loro Piana introduced 'Apacheta,' a series of three captivating installations by the talented Argentinian artist and designer, Cristián Mohaded. These site-specific installations were inspired by the traditional rock piles found in the Andean Mountains, which served as both markers for trails and offerings to Mother Earth in ancient rituals. Mohaded's art installations amplify the significance of this topography with their towering structures emerging from the ground, enveloped in repurposed fabrics from Loro Piana Interiors.

The collaboration between Mohaded and Loro Piana stems from a shared passion for exquisite materials and masterful craftsmanship, as well as a deep connection to Argentina, the birthplace of Mohaded and the source of Loro Piana's most precious and rare natural fibers, particularly the Vicuña.

The furniture pieces showcased in these installations beautifully translate the breathtaking essence of the Andean landscape. They epitomize a meticulous savoir-faire and an unwavering dedication to sourcing the most exquisite materials.
