The average temperature is around 0 degrees Celsius or 34 degrees Fahrenheit. February is the best month for those who want to make it all the way down to the Polar Circle. And today one of Antarctica most intimidating inhabitant… Leopard Seals!This seal is sometimes called the sea leopard, and the resemblance is more than skin deep. Like their feline namesakes, leopard seals are fierce predators. They are the most formidable hunters of all the seals and the only ones that feed on warm-blooded prey, such as other seals. Leopard seals use their powerful jaws and long teeth to kill smaller seals, fish, and squid.

These effective predators live in frigid Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters, where they also eat penguins. They often wait underwater near an ice shelf and snare the birds just as they enter the water after jumping off the ice. They may also come up beneath seabirds resting on the water surface and sn**ch them in their jaws

And these little guys are Gentoo penguins which are some guests that will welcome you in landings and zodiac cruises while visiting different sites in Antarctica, did you know they can live 15/20 years in the wild? Large seabirds like skuas and giant petrels steal gentoo eggs and try to make off with chicks. All gentoo penguins are on the watch for leopard seals and orcas, which also feed on them . The ice in Antarctica might seem static, but it is constantly moving. Pieces of ice are continuously breaking off from ice shelf, glaciers or other icebergs. They float freely along with the Antarctic currents, with about 90 per cent of their mass below the surface of the water. This fact is actually what gave rise to the nowadays popular phrase “the tip of the iceberg”. Regardless, the sighting of the first iceberg is always a moment to celebrate in any and all Antarctic expeditions. Drake hell or Drake Lake?? This is how we expeditioners like to call both ends of same crossing and though it is on luck both options are what makes a real expedition to Antarctica start with the right foot. One makes us think of first expeditioners courage to cross it with wooden ships and no technology at all and the other one makes us think of how lucky we can be and enjoy all birds following our way up or down to the white continent. And even get a glimpse of Cape Horn at some point during the crossing.
Regardless our luck it is worth it and a memory to treasure.
