The term itself, “fiaker,” comes from French and originally referred to the hackney carriage stand in Paris’s Rue de Saint Fiacre. In Vienna, these carriages were initially known as “Janschky” coaches but were renamed “fiakers” in 1720. From 1860 to 1900, over 1,000 fiakers operated in Vienna. Today, fewer than 50 fiakers roam the streets of Vienna.
