Rentiere im Paderborner Land? Das kann man sich heute nur schwer vorstellen.
In der Eiszeit vor etwa 12.000 Jahren war das aber noch anders. Die Temperaturen waren kühler und in den weiten Tiefebenen entwickelte sich eine Tundrenlandschaft, in der sich Rentiere wohl fühlten.

Die Tiere wurden zur Hauptjagdbeute der Menschen, welche sich an die veränderte Umwelt und neue Jagdbeute anpassen mussten. Die Rentierjäger der sogenannten Ahrensberger-Kultur schlugen auch im Paderborner Land ihre Lager auf.

Heute sind einige Lagerplätze dieser Kultur bekannt. An ihnen wurden Oberflächenfunde entdeckt, die mehr Aufschluss über die Geschichte der Plätze geben.
Viele Funde sind dem ehrenamtlichen Bodendenkmalpfleger Hermann Pongratz zu verdanken. So auch der auf dem Foto abgebildete altsteinzeitliche Retuscheur, den er kürzlich fand.

This is one of Sardinia's finest examples of a Bronze Age Nuraghe. These buildings are either single towered or more complex multi-towered structures, served & mixture of purposes. Having now visited many of these Bronze Age marvels, it appears to me that they served similar functions to a medieval castle, acting as the home and administrative center for a region, or in the case of Nuraghe, a tribal teritory, and as the last line of defense if the need arises.

Nuraghe Santa Barbara commands a view of an almost unparalleled vista of Sardinia. The Nuraghe still stands at an impressive height, and although time has robbed the building of its original splendor, it provides a unique look at how these mysterious megalithic buildings would have been like over 3000 years ago.

Das Alte Ägypten präsentiert sich mit der begehbaren Opferkammer eines Grabes aus dem Alten Reich, und europaweit singulär ist ein Sarg mit einer Sternenuhr. DESERTED MEDIEVAL VILLAGE: We used to live next to this beauty. With thanks to the tech of LiDAR you can really see the earthworks of the village of Bingham’s Melcombe, Dorset, England. You can see the village comprises of a small group of houses, paddocks, gardens, yards and streets.

If you look closely you can see the well trodden streets. Contrary to popular belief – this is not a ‘Plague Village’ or a ‘Black Death Village’.

As much as there seems to be a ‘romantic’ myth about abandoned medieval villages being wiped out by the plague (or the Great Mortality as it was known at the time), there is very little evidence of this being fact.

It is interesting to note that the Black Death entered England via Dorset – in fact it was Melcombe Regis (most will know this place as Weymouth).

This village here at Bingham's Melcombe was abandoned somewhere around 1400. Even though the Black Death must have greatly hastened the population decline, it was not absolute.
Abandonment is often down to social and economic changes and rapid depopulation very rarely happened.

It was always, as it is today, a slow decline. The young, fit and able would be the first to leave, gradually the last people left were the sick and elderly. Once their days came to an end and the last person died then this was the end of the village.

We are lucky to have such great archaeology that survived the plough. Lucky because it was emparked in the 1500s, which meant the archaeology is preserved.

It was an early emparkment. It's fashion and boom time came in the 17th and 18th centuries (recognise the name Capability Brown? He was the foremost English landscape architect).

In the locality you can see an abundance of strip lynchets which shows us this was farmed on the open field system. The real menace of the middle ages was the humble sheep and many villages were ‘cleared’ to make way for them.

Don’t forget, England’s wealth was built on the back of sheep’s wool, there was shift in farming from feudal agriculture to flock masters but that’s a story for another time.

Ein neues Mondhorn aus Basel
Basel-Rebgasse: In einer spätbronzezeitlichen Grube, die beim Aushub des Hausanschlusses an der Rebgasse 68 von der ABBS entdeckt wurde, fanden sich neben vielen weiteren Funden auch zwei Fragmente eines sogenannten Mondhorns.
Mondhörner werden in der Forschung unterschiedlich interpretiert. Sie erinnern an liegende Mondsicheln oder Rinderhörner. Die gängigste Theorie geht davon aus, dass sie aufgrund ihrer Form, Machart, Merkmale und Befundsituationen Kultobjekte waren, die vielleicht eine kalendarische Funktion hatten. Funde wie die Himmelscheibe von Nebra verdeutlichen, dass die Menschen damals über ein komplexes astronomisches Wissen verfügten. Anhand von Sonne, Sternen und des letzten beziehungsweise ersten sichelförmigen Mondlichts wurden Daten im bäuerlichen religiösen Jahr festgelegt. Möglicherweise wurden Mondhörner eine gewisse Zeit lang im rituellen Kontext verwendet und danach absichtlich zerstört. Weitere Exemplare auf Kantonsgebiet fanden sich bis heute nur bei zwei Ausgrabungen: in der Kleinbasler Kartausgasse und in Riehen an der Inzlingerstrasse.

In 2009, a mass Viking grave containing 54 decapitated skeletons was discovered by archaeologists on the South Dorset Ridgeway, located in the hills between Dorchester and Weymouth, England.

All of the skeletons were males, and all were buried in shallow graves with their decapitated heads piled up to one side. This Viking had a long term abscess in his femur. That must have been agony...!

Darparodd cloddiadau yn Din Lligwy breuanau a morter a niferoedd mawr o esgyrn anifeiliaid, a gwartheg oedd y rhywogaeth amlycaf gyda defaid yn ail. Mae nifer o weddillion pysgod cregyn yn awgrymu arallgyfeirio diet. Roedd rhai darganfyddiadau eraill yn cynnwys bron i 800 darn o grochenwaith, sawl darn o wydr, tua 12 darn a***n Rhufeinig diweddar, slag haearn, efydd llen a chast ac ingotau o a***n a phlwm. Mae pen saeth petit-tranchet a ddarganfuwyd yn Din Lligwy bellach yn Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru.

Excavations at Din Lligwy provided querns and mortars and large numbers of animal bone, in which cattle were the dominant species with sheep second. Numerous shell-fish remains suggest a diversification of diet. Some other finds included nearly 800 shards of pottery, several pieces of glassware, about 12 late Roman coins, iron slag, sheet and cast bronze and ingots of silver and lead. A derived petit-tranchet arrowhead found at Din Lligwy is now in the National Museum of Wales.

Bush Barrow, located at the western end of the Normanton Down Barrows cemetery in Wiltshire, England, is a significant site from the early British Bronze Age Wessex culture, dating back to around 2000 BC.

It stands as one of the most crucial sites within the Stonehenge complex, known for yielding some of the most spectacular grave goods found in Britain. The barrow was excavated in 1808 by William Cunnington on behalf of Sir Richard C**t H***e. Among the notable finds were intricately worked gold objects, which are now on display at the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes.
