🐟 Adventure Awaits: Airlie Beach to King Ash Bay & Beyond!

The countdown is on—only 1 month until we hit the road! This time, we’re taking the big rig with the tinny on the back, cruising straight through from Airlie Beach all the way to King Ash Bay in the Northern Territory.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there—once we reach King Ash Bay, we’ll be collecting a houseboat to head up the mighty MacArthur River. Our mission? To explore as far as the mouth of the Gulf, chasing after legendary Barramundi and elusive Threadfin Salmon.

After we’ve conquered the MacArthur River, it’s time to tackle Hell’s Gate Road towards Karumba. Along the way, we’ll be stopping at any spot that looks like a perfect camp. The best memories are made off the beaten track.

Stay tuned for updates, epic fishing stories, and plenty of outback adventures! Who’s ready for a trip to remember? šŸŒ…šŸŽ£

I guess you could say the Lions Den Hotel is as tough as a lion, standing strong against the winds of change (and cyclones)! It's definitely no paper tiger, that's for sure. Here's to many more years of laughter, good times, and maybe a few more storms for the Lions Den Hotel to weather.

From Bramwell station to the picturesque Mapoon, with a pit stop at Weipa to restock on supplies. The rugged terrain proved to be a challenge for our trusty fridge freezer, prompting us to upgrade to a new one before we reached our destination.

Upon reaching Old Mapoon, the boys were eager to cast their lines and try their luck at fishing. The waters did not disappoint, teeming with an abundance of Blue Salmon, King Salmon, Grunter, and Crabs. It felt like a nostalgic trip back to my childhood days spent fishing in Karumba.

The thrill of catching Barramundi in the castnet, sometimes two at a time, added to the excitement of our adventure. Bec also now needs a new Castnet as hers is no longer hole less. The waters of Old Mapoon were alive with fish, but the ever-present danger of saltwater crocodiles added an element of risk to our fishing escapades.

The boys were ecstatic with their haul, and we cooked up a feast that night around the campfire. The fresh seafood was a taste sensation, and we all agreed that Mapoon was a hidden gem for fishing enthusiasts.

As we packed up camp on the 5th day, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this remote and beautiful part of Australia. We agree that we would definitely be back to Mapoon for more fishing adventures in the future.

Day 5 - We finally made it to the tip of Cape York, the northernmost point of Australia. We already find ourselves wishing we had taken more time on our journey, but now we have the freedom to wander and explore other hidden gems along the way.

We ventured down a beach track to reach the iconic sign marking our accomplishment. After snapping a few obligatory photos, we made our way back to our vehicle. That's when a cranky mud crab decided to make an appearance from the mangroves.

Without skipping a beat, we used Dan's trusty Crocs as makeshift tools to catch the crab. With a bit of effort and some laughter, we managed to secure our dinner for the night. Nothing quite like a fresh catch from the tip of Cape York to end a memorable day of adventure

Day 4 - Nolans Brook to Bamaga. After a short ferry trip across the Jardine River we arriving in Bamaga. Quickest shop ever to restock our supplies at the local supermarket, we then arrived at Alau Beach Campgrounds. The hot showers were more like cold showers, but hey, at least it woke us up! We watched in amazement as the locals effortlessly dove off their boats and emerged with crayfish.

As we settled in for the night around the campfire, the sun set over the beach, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the quirky adventures and unforgettable moments that this trip had in store for us. Tomorrow, who knows what wacky antics will unfold as we continue our journey north towards the tip of Australia. But for now, we're just happy to be here, soaking in the hilarity of Alau Beach Campgrounds and the quirky charm of its inhabitants.
