Australia’s largest annual bird count event is back for its 7th year! Held between 19–25 October, the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard, no matter where your backyard happens to be. You can count in a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, down by the beach, or the main street of town. ⁠

In fact, you don't even have to leave home, making it the ultimate Covid-safe activity!⁠
⁠
To take part all you need is 20 minutes and your favourite outdoor space. ⁠
⁠
Not only will you be contributing to BirdLife Australia's knowledge of Aussie birds, but there are also some great prizes on offer. ⁠

The yearly bird count gives us a snapshot in time of bird numbers around the nation – so if you’ve participated before and are raring to go – remember the app doesn’t kick in until the count begins on 19 October (one month to go!). ⁠

June is a great month to catch up with these iconic seabirds at their cliff top colonies. This painting was based on studies made in Shetland several years ago.

A plethora of places in eastern Queensland are likely to have endured their coldest May day on record today. 😱 Some all-time (any month) records could have fallen as well.

This exceptionally cold weather was caused by a thick band of cloud sitting above a mass of cold air, providing the ideal conditions for limited daytime heating.

Some notable running maximum temperatures as of 10pm on Saturday were:
- Rockhampton 12.1ºC, 14ºC below average (equal lowest maximum temperature on record for any month)
- Townsville 14.4ºC, 13ºC below average
- Mackay 13.1ºC, 11ºC below average

Official maximum temperatures for today won't be confirmed until 9am tomorrow. We will have more updates on this weekend's cold weather records in the coming days.
