🇦🇺 Was honoured to speak at the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia Brisbane North Branch meeting today. It was also great to see young Rod (pictured right) who was on our recent Anzac Day tour. Had a parmi after which was great thanks KW RSL Club 😊

My Dad was a ‘Nasho’ and did a tour in Vietnam. Pictured before, during and after.

The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia was founded in 1987 and now is the second largest ex-service organisation in the nation.

It represents the 287,000 young men called up for service in the Navy, Army and Air Force in two schemes between 1951 and 1972.

Of them, 212 died on active service - two in Borneo and 210 in Vietnam.

Anzac Heroes: Lt Col. Henry 'Harry' William Murray, VC, CMG, DSO & Bar, DCM.

Also known as 'Mad Harry', he enlisted as a Private, finished the war as a Lieutenant Colonel and became the most highly decorated soldier of the British Empire.

He served through Gallipoli being awarded the DCM for gallantry and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his actions at Mouquet Farm in August 1916. A 'Mention in Despatches' kicked off 1917 for Murray, but it was on the night of 4/5 February 1917 that he would put in his best work to date, and earn the VC capturing 'Stormy Trench'.

A heavy artillery barrage preceded the attack and the enemy trenches were seized. Despite repeated German counter-attacks, Murray and his men bombed and defended their position on the right flank, and even launched counter-attacks to regain lost ground.

With the addition of timely artillery support, the enemy attacks were eventually broken and Stormy Trench was held. Of the 140 men in Murray's 'A' Company who took part in the attack, only 48 survived 'unscathed'.

The citation for Murray's VC reads:
"For most conspicuous bravery when in command of the right flank company in attack. He led his company to the assault with great skill and courage, and the position was quickly captured. Fighting of a very severe nature followed, and three heavy counter-attacks were beaten back, these successes being due to Captain Murray's wonderful work.

Throughout the night his company suffered heavy casualties through concentrated enemy shell fire, and on one occasion gave ground for a short way. This gallant officer rallied his command and saved the situation by sheer valour.

He made his presence felt throughout the line, encouraging his men, heading bombing parties, leading bayonet charges, and carrying wounded to places of safety.

His magnificent example inspired his men throughout."

'Mateship' is an integral part of the 'Anzac Spirit' and helped the Aussies endure the unimaginable horrors of the trenches. They had a tremendous friendship with the local French and Belgian people who appreciated their sacrifice. Over 100 years later, we are so thankful for our 'Battlefield Mates' who make sure our dear lads are never forgotten and make our tours extra special.

D-Day, 6 June 1944. The famous assault on the German gun battery at Brecourt Manor by Lt Dick Winters and men of Easy Company (plus Dog Company for the 4th gun). The Germans had 4 guns arranged in an 'L' shape, firing on Utah Beach. MG42 machine guns were set up for defence. Lt Winters captured the first gun, and using the drainage ditch, proceeded to capture the second and third guns, before Lt Ronald Speirs arrived with men from Dog Company and captured the last gun before the withdrawal.
The assault was wonderfully recreated in the mini-series, Band of Brothers.
It was an honour to walk in their footsteps during our Normandy 2024 tour.

Making group tours personal: A Story from Anzac Day 1918

“The 'Monument [Wood]' is your goal and nothing is to stop your getting there. Kill every bloody German you see, we don’t want any prisoners, and God bless you!” Captain Billy HARBURN, 51st Battalion AIF.

Don, Glen and Les booked the 2024 tour to walk in the footsteps of their Anzac relatives. These 3 fellas had never met until this tour. Don hailed from SA, while Glen and Les are lads from WA. In fact, until Les contacted me, he had no idea he had any Anzac relatives - he has 4.

While researching their relatives it became apparent to me just how special this visit to VILLERS-BRETONNEUX was going to be. We would be walking in the footsteps of 4 young Anzacs who fought side-by-side on Anzac Day 1918 as part of the 13th Brigade counter-attack south of the town after the Germans had seized it on 24 April 1918.

On this day, Ted HIGGINS (Glen) and Edward & Charles WESTERN (Les) of the 51st Battalion, and Norm ARNEY (Don) of the 50th, lined up to take back VILLERS-BRETONNEUX from the Germans.
106 years later, to the day, their shared story unfolded in the very fields where the 13th Brigade attacked as Glen, Les and Don stood together on the very spot where their relatives made history.

The Australians launched their daring counter-attack at 10:10pm, 24 April 1918 with Pompey Elliot’s 15th Brigade to the north, and Glasgow’s 13th Brigade to the south, looking to encircle the town to the east. It was tough going for the boys of the 13th and many casualties were sustained across the ground on which we stood.

It was during the advance and capture of VILLERS-BRETONNEUX on 25 April 1918 that Ted HIGGINS and Edward WESTERN were sadly killed, while Charles WESTERN was gassed later that afternoon. These 2 lads have no known grave, but there are quite a number of 51st Battalion buried in ADELAIDE CEMETERY.

It was an honour to research and tell the story of Ted, Edward, Charles and Norm and their mates across this sacred ground. The whole group was blessed by this experience. Thank you lads. Lest we forget.

Making group tours personal: The Story of Bev’s Great-Uncle, Captain Fred WARD.

"Captain WARD was a very popular man..." Private PILE (23rd Battalion AIF).

Our Anzac Day 2024 tour was filled with so many great stories about our guests’ Anzac relatives. The memorials and cemeteries only tell part of the story though...

Our next personal story was north of Pozieres village where we followed the story of Bev's relative - Captain Fred WARD of the 23rd Battalion AIF.

On the night of 28/29 July 1916, the 23rd Battalion AIF attacked in a north-easterly direction across from near the village cemetery towards OG1 & OG2 on the ridge. It was a difficult attack, but they managed to capture their positions. However, the 7th Brigade AIF attacking on the right was not as successful in taking their objectives, so Fred’s battalion had to fall back slightly and consolidate.

On 2 August 1916, the 23rd Battalion AIF relieved the 21st Battalion AIF in the front line (same vicinity). The position was heavily shelled that evening and poor Fred was wounded badly in the legs and right arm, during which he sustained a compound fracture of the right femur.

At this stage of the war, 80% of compound fractures of the femur were fatal. Fred was transported to a dressing station by stretcher bearers, but the CO learned Fred had succumbed to his wounds during the day on 3 August 1916 (Battalion War Diary). He was buried in WARLOY-BAILLON Communal Cemetery Extension.

Much to Bev’s surprise, we didn’t head straight to the cemetery. We started Fred’s story in the very fields where he attacked on the evening of 28/29 July 1916, and where he was mortally wounded on 2 August 1916. Bev was the first in her family to visit this special location and it was an emotional time of reflection. Bev then visited with Fred in the Cemetery where he rests. He knew she would come...

It was an honour to research and tell the story of Fred WARD and his mates across this sacred ground. Thank you Bev. Lest we forget.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ TOUR REVIEW TIME:
"Once in a lifetime, in-depth, personalized tour."

A truly unique experience with Adam Holloway and Phil guiding us through Australia's WW1 battlefield history in France.

I was impressed by Adam and Phil's depth and breadth of knowledge and the research Adam conducted into our tour member's relatives' experience in the war. He was able to identify and take us to the locations where they fought, where they were injured or died and ultimately to their resting place where known.

A well organised and enlightening experience of a lifetime.

Some of us also chose to tour Normandy to see the WW2 D-Day beaches and battlefields. This was also a very interesting and eye opening experience. Whilst few Australians were involved in D-Day, the contributions of the US, British and Canadians on that day and the weeks to follow were put into perspective by following the attack routes through tiny villages, hedge rows and the larger towns.

All in all, a great, full and well researched trip. Would highly recommend.

5 WAYS WE’RE MAKING GROUP TOURS PERSONAL...
1. Nobody really understands Aussies (especially the ‘1914-18’ kind) like other Aussies. We are dedicated to telling the extraordinary story of the Australians on the Western Front through your Anzac relatives.
2. With no more than 20 guests per tour group, you’ll spend less time waiting around and more time enjoying yourselves. Not to mention smaller groups allow more room on the coach and more time getting to know your fellow guests and us.
3. With a smaller group we can be more flexible and unique with the itinerary as we follow your Anzac relatives, places no one ever goes to, and still see the main sights!
4. Your tour experience is further enhanced by our passionate and detailed research, so we take you in the actual footsteps of your Anzac relative’s most significant actions. The whole group will be blessed as a result.
5. Special experiences with grateful locals who cannot wait to share their stories and love for the Anzacs - your Anzacs!

Making group tours personal: The Story of Mark HATCHER; Reflections on what might have been...

Our next personal story was at POLYGON WOOD where we followed the story of a young soldier that has a special place in Don’s family - Mark HATCHER of the 8th Machine Gun Coy AIF.

Mark was part of a machine gun team dug in to the west of POLYGON WOOD providing ‘barrage’ support to the 26 September 1917 (5th Division AIF) attack on POLYGON WOOD. The MG position was heavily shelled that morning and several men were killed, 4 belonging to one machine gun crew being killed by one shell. Mark HATCHER was also killed during this barrage and all were buried in the same shell hole.

We started Mark's story in the very place where he was killed, which is only some 25m from De Dreve. Don was able to reflect on this spot and leave an Aussie flag in honour of Mark and his fallen mates. However, there was more to the story... because we do not believe Mark is there anymore...

On the following day we visited with 8th MG Company lads, Sergeant RUSSELL and Private PEREZ in SPOILBANK Cemetery. Through our research, we discovered that RUSSELL and PEREZ were killed with Mark and had been buried in the same shell hole after the battle.

RUSSELL & PEREZ were later exhumed along with 2 unknown MG Company AIF soldiers, and were buried together in SPOILBANK CEMETERY. From our research we were able to narrow down who the 2 unknown soldiers might be, but can never be truly certain as there are 3 men unaccounted for; including Mark HATCHER.

Are they Privates KENDALL and/or HATCHER and/or SKIMMINGS?

It was as close as we could get for Don in honouring the memory of a special man.

It was an honour to research and tell the story of Mark HATCHER and his mates across this sacred ground. Thank you Don. Lest we forget.

Making group tours personal: The Death of Arthur GRAY with Nick & Harry GRAY

Our Anzac Day 2024 tour was filled with so many great stories about our guests’ Anzac relatives. The memorials and cemeteries only tell half the story though...

“He was buried in the Australian section of the cemetery at ARMENTIERES. Our platoon erected a cross of imitation marble and we put a railing around the grave. We made it one of the best looking graves in the cemetery...” Percy CARROLL, 41st Battalion AIF.

Our next personal story was at HOUPLINES, near ARMENTIERES where we followed the story of Nick & Harry GRAY's Great-Grandfather, Arthur GRAY of the 41st Battalion AIF.

In early 1917 (and even much later), the area around ARMENTIERES was still considered a ‘Nursery Sector’. A place where new troops could ‘get used to’ trench conditions while subject to frequent heavy shelling, machine gun fire, trench raids, working parties and patrols in No Man’s Land.

In February 1917, Battalions of the new 3rd Australian Division were having ‘a look at Fritz’ in this sector. The Division, under General MONASH, would not have their baptism of fire until June at MESSINES.

On 14 February 1917, Arthur was selected to go out as part of a ‘wiring party’ repairing the defences just south of THE MUSHROOM salient in No Man’s Land (see the map). Lt Douglas GATES led the party out into the shell-torn strip of misery, while patrols roamed around to protect them.

At about 10PM that evening, the party came under enemy fire and poor Arthur was killed instantly with a ‘bullet through the heart’. His Platoon mates brought him back to their lines and lovingly buried him in the cemetery at ARMENTIERES.

We started Arthur's story in the very field at HOUPLINES where he was killed, allowing Nick & Harry an opportunity to reflect. They were the first from the family to visit there. Nick & Harry then visited with Arthur in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, ARMENTIERES. He knew they would come...

It was an honour to research and tell the story of Arthur GRAY and his mates across this sacred ground. Thank you Nick & Harry. Lest we forget.
