It was really interesting to see the Chowilla Floodplain on the Murray River and another large wetland complex on the Murray/Darling system from the air on a recent flight. The evidence of salinity and agriculture exacerbated by drought is very plain to see.

We recently teamed up with our friends at ViridAU to conduct some drone based riparian vegetation monitoring at a mine site in Central Queensland. This technology provides a far more reliable and cost effective methodology compared to traditional ground based monitoring techniques.

The irony of this sign in completely cleared agricultural land that would have once contained a Brigalow woodland, itself an endangered ecological community, but also habitat for threatened wildlife.

It certainly is interesting and challenging times for renewable energy. Good ecological due diligence and advice during site selection to understand constraints is a critical step in the process that project proponents skip at their peril.

More clean energy projects than ever are being assessed under federal environmental laws and it's slowing down the pace of development, according to investors.

A good news story about the potential for renewable energy projects to have lasting positive effects for regional communities!

When Justin Coburn first came to Narrandera in search of a workforce to build a solar farm, he was met with scepticism and questions. Soon a unique partnership formed and the project brought an overwhelming sense of pride for the 30 First Nations men and women who worked on it.

The Commonwealth Government has recently released some guidance regarding the assessment of impacts to the Koala under the EPBC Act. This follows their status changing to endangered earlier in the year. This included guidance of when a Referral under the Act is not required and indicated that an Action would not generally need to he Referred if it involved “clearing of individual or small groups (less than 10) of paddock trees, provided that these are not the only dispersal link between patches of habitat.

This suggests that the Commonwealth has an expectation that projects involving the removal of more than 10 paddock trees may require a Referral and assessment under the EPBC Act. This is a significant change to the assessment of when a Referral was necessary when the Koala was listed as vulnerable.

The full Referral guidance information can be found at:
