Don’t forget to enter our birds of the Bunya Mountains photography competition!

Less than a month to go until our competition closes, so make sure you get your entries in soon. If you enjoy spending time at the Bunya Mountains and photographing the amazing scenery and wildlife all around, then we want your best photos! The Bunya Mountains is renowned for its many varieties of birds and they’re becoming more active now that spring is here, so this month we’re looking for the best bird photograph taken at the Bunya Mountains. The winning photographer will receive a prize pack valued at $100, which includes the stunning book, “Beautiful birds of the Bunya Mountains” by our local resident, Ken Chapman, as well as a $50 gift voucher to Poppies on the Hill Café.

A few rules:
• This competition is seeking the best bird photograph taken at the Bunya Mountains (and if it contains recognisable Bunya Mountains elements, so much the better).
• There is no cost to enter, but participants by entering agree to allow the Bunya Mountains Accommodation Centre the right to use images for marketing purposes (with appropriate acknowledgement).
• All photographs must be suitable for displaying in a public environment.
• Entries are to be submitted in the comments section of this post.
• Entries close Thursday 31st October 2024, and the winner will be notified by Thursday 7th November 2024.
• The competition is open to professional photographers, amateurs and enthusiasts. There is no age limit.
• Images must be submitted as a high-quality jpeg.
• Participants may enter as many times as they like.
• Each entry must be the original work of the person submitting the entry.

We look forward to seeing your creative bird photos over the next few weeks – have fun!

Happy Mother’s Day!

We have some great mothers here at the Bunya Mountains, so let’s paws for a moment to reflect on how awesome (or should that be paw-some?) our mothers are! Happy Mother’s Day to all the paw-sitively amazing mothers out there, as well as all those who love like a mother! We hope you enjoy a delightful day in the company of those you love and being thoroughly spoilt by your family.

Have you ever managed to spot a golden headed cisticola at the Bunya Mountains? These small grass warblers can be found in the grasslands around the mountain, preferring to inhabit tangled ground-level vegetation or low weeds or shrubs. The male is recognisable by its crested golden-orange head during breeding season, while the female sports a darker streaked head with the gold colour visible on the nape of the neck. These chirpy little birds feed on insects and seeds among the grasses, and are renowned for “sewing” leaves and plant down together to form part of their nest. Keep an eye out for these little beauties next time you’re up at the Bunya Mountains.

It's bunya nut time!

It’s the most iconic time of the year at the Bunya Mountains – bunya nut time! These giant edible pinecones, which can sometimes weigh up to 10kg, are ripening and falling across the Bunya Mountains, with loud crashing sounds often being heard under the trees. This ancient food source has been long beloved by the local indigenous people, and was even once food for dinosaurs many eons ago! The birds and animals are enjoying the feast, but we’ve managed to find plenty to use in the café as well to make our delicious bunya burgers and other scrumptious delicacies! It’s a great time of year to visit – just make sure you don’t stand or park under the bunya pines, as the nuts can drop without warning!
