Spend the day in, Byron Bay, and enjoy its beautiful beaches, mingle with the laid back locals, in the hippie environment that Byron Bay is known for. Cavvanbah, the Aboriginal name for the area meaning “meeting place” until European settlement began in 1770 when Captain

Cook found safe anchorage in the area and named Cape Byron after John Byron, circumnavigator of the world. Most popular of which, the Main Beach, directly in front of the town centre. Temperate and tropical waters merge at Byron Bay, making it a popular area for scuba diving and snorkeling. Most diving is done at Julian Rocks, only a few minutes boat ride from Main Beach. The town lies close to subtropical rain-forests, and areas such as the Nightcap National Park with the Minyon Falls are all within easy reach of the town. The Byron Bay scenery makes it a perfect setting for a number of air based activities such as skydiving, ballooning and gliding. This area is also known for its wildlife, with the whale watching industry a significant part of the local tourism economy. Visitors are encouraged to use sustainable options for moving around town like walking and cycling.
