Co-founded by zoologist and author, Dr Tammie Matson, and Earth Hour co-founder Andy Ridley, Matson & Ridley Safaris provides life changing journeys that make a difference. After decades of working in conservation in Africa, Asia and Australia, seeing that some of the best examples of community-based conservation come from ethical safari operations in Africa, Tammie and Andy set up this business t

With the world's wildlife in increasing peril due to conflict with people, habitat loss and poaching, never has there been a greater need to show people the wonders of Africa's natural environments and, through ethical tourism, to contribute to its conservation. Tammie organises bespoke safaris that benefit local people and wildlife, as well as leading several safaris every year herself. Tammie's safaris are intimate, exclusive safaris in the best wildlife areas with other like-minded individuals, along with your own personal zoologist. They are as life changing to the people on the journeys as they are to those they benefit in Africa.

Sunset therapy. Every day on safari we stop and honour the setting of the sun. The setting can be anywhere in the bush as long as you’ve got a great view to appreciate nature’s magnificent light show. Birds come to roost. Jackals cry. It’s a moment to stop and appreciate the wonder of our natural world and to witness the change over of the shift from the diurnal animals to those that hunt at night.

Always a special sighting on safari if you’re lucky enough to see one out of the burrow in daylight is the bat-eared fox. With relatively gigantic ears, which serve a role in thermoregulation, these small predators love to eat termites, but also eat other insects and sometimes berries and seeds.

Elephant trunks are not only glorified noses. Did you know elephants can be left or right-trunked just like humans are left or right handed? Elephant wrinkles play an important role in water retention, helping to keep them cool.

#1 - Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda.

In December 2019 (yes, just before COVID) my wife and I travelled to Rwanda for my first African trip with Matson & Ridley Safaris

Having a wife who absolutely loves Gorillas I was keen to join her on two treks into Volcanoes National Park in search of the mighty Mountain Gorilla.

I would love to write more about the experience however it truly can not be put into words.

Coming face to face with a great ape is like nothing else.

Power, relatability and family.

These are the three words I will use to describe this experience.

Seeing Mountain Gorillas in the wild is a must-do for EVERYONE.

It really is life changing.

Yesterday was World Gorilla Day, celebrating one of the most endangered species and one of our closest relatives. Since 2018 we’ve been supporting gorilla conservation through our safaris in Rwanda, which benefit local communities who live near the gorillas, the rangers who protect them, and also the gorillas themselves. Your safari dollars inject money into the wildlife economy and the gorilla permits paid by our guests goes to gorilla conservation and management by the Rwandan government. Spending time with a gorilla family is a truly inspirational experience and knowing that you’re contributing to their survival in the wild makes it even more wonderful.
