Re-inventing the wheel...
Let me know if this sounds familiar.
I love the creativity of lens filters but have always found them to be passion-killers in my workflow. For example, a 10-stop ND filter is awesome but having to go through my bag, open up plastic cases one at a time, retreiving a black filter with small white writing on it that looks like all of the others, holding it up to the light just to read it, realising it's the wrong one, repeating the process...then screwing it on to the lens, wiping dust and finger marks off it, bumping the focus ring and having to take it off to re-focus, screwing it back on...the joys of photography! 😏

The good bit. A wonderful person in the States called Michael the Maven has made the perfect set of filters in my opinion. Magnetic filters have been around for a while but what this guy has done it incredibly innovative and ground-breaking in terms of the range of unique filters that have never been seen before in the history of photography.

I made a video which shows the basic kit that I have been using and I have also featured a clever filter (the I/2 Magic Grad) that provides a quick & convenient alternative to carrying around a stack of filters. These are just a small fraction of the entire range that Michael has created. There's filters for helping you focus your astro shots, IR filters, CPL/ND combo filters, variable combos, filters that will allow you to take sun trails and photos of the sun's surface. These filters have opened up new avenues of creative photography even after 2 1/2 decades.

Check out the vid and let me know if you're keen for a demo or if you have any questions. I'll add some pics in a separate post.

If you're keen to get a set and would like a discounted price then head to the Maven Filters site that has been set up for us Aussies :)

Exciting times!!! A month to go and we’re off 😁😁😁

In addition to our 10-day Safari around Namibia we also doing this amazing 4-day fly-in Safari which starts in Swakopmund and flies to the massive dunes of Sossusvlei and then ventures through the red sands of the Kalahari Desert. Part of this experience is an option hot-air balloon shoot over Sossusvlei. An epic adventure to say the least đŸ€© Can’t wait

I originally took this image for a Namibian aviation company in back in 2007. The technology didn’t exist back then to bring it up to the level of clarity you can see in the processed version. Thankfully, I shot it in RAW and hoarded the images until such time that an image like this could be properly processed.

Our Sossusvlei fly-in extension itinerary soars over some pretty iconic Namibian landscape to say the least. One of my favourite things to photograph is the Lighthouse Co. Salt Works of Swakopmund.

The best part of these photographic Safari’s is that you get to relive the adventure over and over digital dark room technology changes and more creativity becomes available.

Neuschwanstein Castle or as ze Germans would say

Shlos-noysh-varn-stine (rolls off the tongue doesn’t it)
This fairytale looking creation is located at the foothills of the German Alps in Bavaria. It is highly photogenic and it is worth googling some facts about the crazy King Ludwig II that funded this magnificent icon.

Tree of Life
In the vast desert, a winding river carves intricate, vein-like patterns through the barren land, resembling the branches of a tree. Along its banks, a lush fringe of trees flourishes, their roots drinking deeply from the life-giving water. From above, the river’s tributaries spread out like the branches of a grand tree, creating a living mosaic amidst the desolation. These trees, with their leafy canopies, stand as resilient sentinels, symbolizing hope and vitality in the arid landscape, transforming it into a thriving oasis.

I’ve always been fascinated by desertscapes and in particular, the geothermal activity that lies beneath these baron lands.
Across the Atacama desert and over the border into Bolivia, you can experience bubbling hot pools of sulphur-stenched molten silt which creates temporary and fascinating art pieces like these.

Behold the Viscacha (pronounced viss-car-cha), possibly the coolest rodent you’ll find in the Andes region. A combo of rabbit/donkey/kangaroo and could be mistaken for a marsupial as they are often seen hopping through rocky terrain. The viscacha is related to the chinchilla family.

I became infatuated by these sun-loving desert dwellers on a recent tour through the Atacama and Bolivian desert. They seem to appear out of nowhere and we’re often seen chilling out in the early morning, soaking up the sunrays.
We live in a wonderful world of amazing fauna and this unsung hero of the lesser exotic species category holds a special place in my spirit animal collection 🐇 đŸ« 🩘

“There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices”. and in their element during a wild day in Antarctica earlier this year. We don’t normally encounter this kind of weather but when we do, we are thankful for this combo.

Contrasting colours and silhouettes and hopefully on their way to somewhere amazing.

These are very typical tones that you will see in the Namibian landscape and I hope to post some creative photos very soon when we land in September for WILD Namibia 2024

Swimming with sea lions is such a joyful experience. I highly recommend doing it if you ever get the chance. They are super inquisitive. The sea conditions weren’t terrific, but it was awesome to play along with these acrobatic sea puppies
