If you’ve been on tour with us into Arnhem Land and visited Injalak Hill you probably remember seeing a beautiful rock art painting of Yingarna (Creation Mother).

Graham Badari proudly presenting his latest painting of Yingarna (Creation Mother). 🖌️

Emerging from the Arafura Sea, Yingarna journeyed inland with a headband adorned with dilly bags. Each of the dilly bags were said to contain a different language group and clan. As she traveled, she left these spirit children throughout the land and they became the Bininj people of West Arnhem Land.

Yekke season 🔥flowers of the Darwin woolybutt tree (or man-djalen in Kunwinjku ) at this time of year tell local Aboriginal people is time to clean up country by patch burning areas to encourage new growth and prevent wildfires. It’s green season in all its glory. Except, it isn’t... It’s Kudjewk.

Kudjewk (Dec - March) an epic time to experience a true tropical summer, thunderstorms, raging waterfalls, floodplains alive with wildlife.

Kakadu’s Traditional Owners recognise six different seasons based on thousands of years of local knowledge. The transitions between seasons are marked by variations in the weather, plants, flowers and bush tucker. Kudjewk’s heat and humidity cause an explosion of plant and animal life and its an amazing time to visit the Top End.

Namarrkon is an important creation ancestor who is responsible for the lightning storms that occur every tropical summer.

A much anticipated visitor as we wait for our first storm this wet season. Namarrkon bring us some relief from this heat and light up our night skies, bring on some lightning dreaming!

Namarrkon’s story covers his journey from the coastline of the Cobourg Peninsula (where we operate our Cobourg Coastal Camp) to a rock shelter in the Sandstone Country of the Arnhem Land plateau, where he remains today.
