Currently on tour in N Qld, had a day out on Michaelmas Cay last Sunday we saw some three species of Bo***es, Masked, Red-footed and Brown and also an immature tattler that I initially ID'd as Wandering but now am unsure, pics are available at https://ebird.org/checklist/S198649101

The Red-bellied Fruit-Dove is a reasonably easy to see species on Efate, Vanuatu and seems fairly closely related to the Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove of Eastern Australia. This was one of two birds found by Neal at the Tanna Coffee Factory yesterday.

This week birding was a bit of a 'challenge' here in Efate, Vanuatu but there were some 'highlights', a very big thanks to 'top-guide' Ansen Obed for showing us some great-spots 🤩.

A fairly reasonable mornings birding so far today with Rob Macalister of Vanuatu Ecotours but the undoubted highlight for me was this lone Tanna Fruit-dove atop of a large fig-tree.

Just found out that April 20th is International Cuckoo Day....so time to check out Cuckoos of the World

Cuckoos are bird species found in most regions of the Earth. They are fascinating creatures, many of them being brood-parasites (laying their eggs in other birds nests) We welcome images of any of the genus Cuculus, Coccyzus, Cercococcyx, Pachycoccyx, Clamator, Microdynamis, Eudynamys, Chrysococcyx....

Has anyone birded Vanuatu recently? In May I'm hoping to go to Port Vila for a week and have already booked some birding with Vanuatu Ecotours but wonder if there are any day boat-cruises that might be worth taking? Am a bit limited by budget but would welcome any advice.

Over the past couple of years have despaired over the lack of Shining Bronze-cuckoos in our region, their numbers seem to have dropped alarmingly in our area north of Brisbane, so was pleasantly surprised when I heard a couple of individuals calling this morning.....however 5 of these birds all flew into a small eucalypt and I realized that they were all of the NZ race 'lucidus' by their green nape, crown and 'beady-eyed' appearance, obviously on a northerly-bound migration. Unfortunately as I was on 'bin-duty' I left the camera behind and could only use my phone for these pics....it would be great if others could add to the sparse-knowledge of this race (....or species) and document their sightings ;)

Just finished a 6-day twitch-fest around SE Qld with a young American birder Ethan, not only has he already acquired 300+ species in Australia but he is our 8th highest eBird-lister for 2024!

Just having some great fun with a new bioacoustic device and app called Birdweather, the PUC records calls and analyses them with BirdNET and these can be viewed globally, unfortunately Australia still needs a bit more data to be totally-effective but it's pretty 'awesome' all the same.....congratulations Tim! https://www.birdweather.com/
