Following the LSR success, Donald now planned to go after the Water Speed Record one more time, to do what he had aimed for so many years ago, during the initial planning stages of CN7 – break both records in the same year. Initially the attempt was to be made on Lake Bonney, at Barmera, 120 miles north east of Adelaide, but after more setbacks and frustrations with the weather, he was forced to seek a new venue. The team eventually decided on Lake Dumbleyung, near Perth, WA, some 3000 miles distant. After decamping across the continent, and after further weather linked frustrations, he got his seventh WSR by the skin of his teeth on the last day of 1964, when he took Bluebird K7 to an average of 276.33mph. This was undoubtedly his finest achievement: Donald Campbell became the first and only man in history to break both the Land and Water Speed Records in the same year, a feat that will unlikely ever be repeated. The images to the right depict the scene 58 years ago to this day.

Remembering our hero, Donald Malcolm Campbell CBE, who died this day 4th January 1967 on Coniston Water just before 8.50am on his return run in an attempt to break his own World Water Speed record in his legendary craft Bluebird K7.

Today it is 55 years since Donald Campbell was fatally injured in his Water Speed Record attempt on Coniston Water. We will remember Donald in our usual way with a service and wreath laying at the Memorial in Coniston, then a visit to his grave. Sadly Tonia Bern-Campbell also passed away last June and today we will inter her ashes so she and Donald can finally be reunited. ❤️❤️

On this day, 55 years ago, 4th January 1967, at 08:49, Donald Campbell lost his life while attempting to set, what would have been, his eighth WSR. Rest In Peace. God Speed.

On this day in 1964 in Australia, on Lake Dumbleyung Donald Campbell achieved a World Water Speed Record of 276.33 mph, on the very last day of the year. He may have cut it fine, but he remains the only person to have broken both the World Land and World Water Speed Records in the same year. Also known as “The Double” This achievement is unlikely to be equalled.
