RIP Chico the Donkey.
He lived a long and happy life and died peacefully of old age.
A dear friend, who was loved by all who saw him. A cheeky, cheerful, super friendly companion. Who loved pats, hugs and carrots. Will be deeply missed by all who met him. š

We need to capture all the energy from the sun that we can during the winter months. Doubling as a car port, this new array of solar panels makes available an additional 10.5 kw to help charge the batteries on those gloomy days, or maybe an electric vehicle when there's a big excess.

This is where we spend every Christmas morning, where the kids learnt to surf, where we catch our dinner, where we gallop on horseback across the sand.
Where we watch the best sunsets, swim with dolphins, and scramble on the rocks.
Where we dive to a shipwreck or craypot.
Where we bliss out with mates and meet up with family.
This is our closest point to the Indian Ocean.
This is our very special place.

Itās that farm fungus foraging time of year, when all the fungies come out to play! Love this time of year, when the property is sparkling, the beaches are bare and the roads are quiet. But nature never sleeps.

Mud mud glorious mud! When building the Dome we adopted a traditional method of mixing the render, which was a combination of clay, mud and chopped up straw as binder. Originally we were putting it all into a cement mixer and blending it that way. Then one day by pure chance a young French man came to the farm to look at a car that we had for sale. Turned out he had spent several years working in straw bale construction, and suggested we use a more traditional method of mixing it all up with your feet! This allowed us to mix up much larger batches and exfoliate our feet at the same time! Thereās something a bit fun about getting knee deep in cool smiley mud first thing everyday. ;)
Happy as a pig š·.....

Not that we needed lonely planet to tell us how special this region is..
It's the jewel in WA's crown, a part of the State that holds a special place in the hearts of West Australians. Now, the rest of the world will find out just how good it is.

What better way to get cosy this winter than to snuggle up in a straw bale cottage in front of the pot belly stove. We spend the autumn gathering and chopping wood from the farm plantations so we can keep the home fires burning š„

The Guinea pigs roam free here. They are our off grid silent lawnmowers. We love to sit and watch them nibble the grass, squeaking and chattering to each other. If youāre feeling energetic you can try catch one for a gentle pat, just make sure your dog isnāt watching and getting any ideas! .

One of the most common comments from our guests is how much their children enjoyed being amongst the animals. To see childrensā fascination with the creatures is such a joy. To watch them behave with such gentleness and respect is beautiful to witness. If you arenāt in the position to be able to own pets of your own, there are plenty here whoād love your attention! (And the odd carrot š„).

Another cracker of a sunset last night. These autumn skies are really turning it on. Looks like the sun is exploding as it disappears out of view.

First ducklings of 2022! Come and visit the farm to meet them in person!
Birchfield Farmstay is a 10 min drive South of the quaint Margaret River township.
Well-located for beaches, Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park and all the major wineries - Leeuwin Estate, Voyager Estate, Redgate, Cape Mentelle, Xanadu and Mr Barval, this delightful Farmstay offers walking, bird-watching and relaxation in a restful rustic setting with a variety of friendly and tame farm animals. With two accommodation options available: The Chalet and The Dome
The Chalet is cosy and simple, the wood fire will keep you toasty warm in the cooler months, and the excellent insulation qualities of the straw bale construction keep it cool during the heat of the summer. The Chalet can sleep up to 5 and features one queen bedroom and a second bedroom with bunks. A baby cot available on request. There is a sheltered outdoor area for bbq dining, as well as a wood fired bread oven for the adventurous.
The Dome is a unique addition to Birchfield Farmstay. A clay-rendered strawbale house designed and built by Andy, the owner, with a completely round living room/kitchen/dining room area. The Dome's design is as impressive as its beautiful and peaceful surrounds. The strawbale Dome is warm in Winter and cool in Summer, so is comfortable all year round. This is an eco-friendly and energy efficient house.
The Dome offers the perfect environment for families to congregate at meal times with an easy flow living/dining and entertainment space. With space for a reading couch, comfy sofa in front of the TV and fireplace and open kitchen, the whole family can co-exist in the same space, while having their own areas.
There are two bedrooms. The master bedroom features a queen bed with en-suite and private verandah overlooking the forest.
The second bedroom features two single beds, that can be joined to form a king, plus two bunk beds that have been designed specifically for the Dome, ideal for kids.
A sofa bed in the lounge/living area can sleep another 2 adults.

Both accommodation houses are nestled at the edge of a forest on a 90 acre property, 15 kilometres south of Margaret River town.
Birchfield Farmstay is home to 3 donkeys, 3 alpacas, peacocks, guinea fowl and ducks, guinea pigs and 2 pigs; Patricia and Tea Cup. Feel free to make yourself at home by roaming the farm, feeding the friendly animals or meandering through the natural forests on the property. Both the Dome and Chalet offer Satellite TV, surround sound music system and WiFi.
The famous Redgate and Conto's surf beaches are a short drive, and the safe swimming beach of Gnarabup is only 15 minutes away. With quirky
