Suddenly we had no water when we switched the bore on to top up our tanks. The electrician said that the failure may have been caused by storm damage. A decision was made to lift the bore to check the cabling and motor. It was 138 meters down the borehole. This meant suitable machines and expertise to lift the bore apparatus. The bore was installed in the middle of 2017. Electrolysis between two metals (stainless steel and galvanised) that do not mix caused the fault. It was pulled up and tested. The cabling has an outer rubber coating which started breaking down and allowing water into the electric cable. 138 meters of new electrical was successfully installed with new stainless steel fittings.
We are grateful to have expertise in Russell and Son from Toowoomba.
The repairs took 5 hours.

The old vegetable garden had 4 small raised beds and no fencing. David had a Grand Design of making it safe from birds and other animals. He began constructing the enclosure that measures 16.5 meters long and 11.300 wide. 150 meters of Avery wire enclosed the structure which has a pitched steel frame (all constructed by David). The Hen House and additional raised veggie beds completed the project. Each bed has its own automated watering system.

Six heritage breed hens arrived in January 2019. The two Silver Laced Wyandotte (Lacey and Smudge), one Speckled Sussex (Heather), and one French Faverole (Fay). They don't produce many eggs so we included 2 Isa Browns (Pip and Ping) and later 2 Australorps (Amy and Audrey) at the end of 2021.

Since then we have had an abundance of eggs, tomatoes, lettuces, Asian greens, spring onions, capsicums, cauliflowers, cabbage, and experimental crops. The marigolds and various herbs are part of the companion planting philosophy that we follow which includes no pesticides.

Before I launched Fairview Cottage I knew I would have to get up to speed with most forms of social media to have an ongoing presence of my product, and accommodation in a beautiful rural setting. Overwhelmed with this thought I Googled getting started with Instagram. There was one website that really stood out and that was Kat Coroy (.com). I looked at her course and what her students had said about it. In particular, I was impressed with Ursula Hurn's comments, so I sent her a message requesting more information about how Kat's course helped her. Ursula also had a course on how to organize digitally called the IG OrganiSZer .com). As I love being efficient and knowing where to find things, I knew her course would benefit me. It was the best thing I have done with my digital media files (photos, captions, ideas, daily social media task list and much more). I can now find every caption I created and all the images that went with it. This began a wonderful journey into the world of social media, Canva software, and so much more. I'm happy to have completed Ursula's course and enjoyed every minute! As a bonus her students meet up with Ursula on Zoom regularly from all over the world to finesse our Instagram activities. This is a continuing fun learning experience.

The meaning I give to this learning journey is one of joy, accomplishment, connection to new people, and a sense of excitement for the future. I will continue to give positive meanings to happy pursuits. Thanks, Steffi August (.com) for the beautiful quote and the inspiration for this post;

I love Valentine's Day, but not in the true commercial sense of the word.
Many of you won't be able to celebrate today as it's a work day for many of us, perhaps booking a restorative weekend at Fairview Cottage is the way to go?
Here is an excerpt from the website ( www.onlyroses)

"Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. There are many stories about St Valentine and over time these stories grew into the legend we know today.
At the time of Valentine's life, many Romans were converting to Christianity, but Emperor Claudius II was a pagan and created strict laws about what Christians were allowed to do. Claudius believed that Roman soldiers should be completely devoted to Rome and therefore passed a law preventing them from marrying. St Valentine began to marry these soldiers in secret Christian ceremonies and this was the beginning of his reputation for believing in the importance of love.
Eventually, Valentine was found out and jailed for his crimes against Claudius. While imprisoned, Valentine cared for his fellow prisoners and also his jailor's blind daughter. Legend has it that Valentine cured the girl's blindness and that his final act before being executed was to write her a love message signed ‘from your Valentine'. Valentine was executed on 14 February in the year 270."

A well deserved break from their caravanning tour of Australia. It's lovely to be in the wide open country and the freedom of being on the road with your accommodation in tow.
But sometimes the cramped home on wheels can get a little too close and cosy. Monique and Ian were our first guests. They loved the spacious peaceful Cottage and expansive views. Out for a special dinner at the acclaimed Myrtille's in Crows Nest did not disappoint.
They were great fun and we can't wait to have them back again.

I just love gardening. Creating beautiful landscapes that enhance views and captures your heart.

Not surprisingly I always found time to garden. Even as a busy working mum I would visit a plant nursery and dream. Relocating to Hampton, Queensland from Perth in W.A., to be closer to family, I was captured by the cooler climate and good rainfall and exquisite soil. In just half an hour I could be in Toowoomba famous for it's Carnival of Flowers in September, beautiful parks and traditional Queensland Houses. Locally, the Festival of Country Gardens is an annual event. Visiting large farm gardens and smaller town ones in Crows Nest is a real treat in Spring.

Gardening clubs flourish here too, and there are many to choose from. Native orchids, bromeliads, camelias, roses, Clivias, to name just a few. There is always some beautiful Club display to visit.

Accommodation during these times is booked out so it pays to plan early.

Fairview Cottage has hosted a few guests already and we can't wait to see what the 2023 New Year brings. The rainfall has spurred growth that I haven's seen in the garden since we began planting in mid 2017. It's evident that we were in a drought and new plants did struggle and we lost a few. However, when we look at it now, we cant believe it was a paddock with only one Crepe Myrtle in the middle when we purchased the property in early 2017.

Traveling from mid-coast NSW is a long way, even if you do have a break with family in coastal Queensland before traveling inland to Toowoomba. Attending or presenting at a function has its stress factors especially if you are on a tight schedule.

Susan wrote of her stay at Fairview Cottage in August 'Luxurious comfort in a country setting. Gardens Magnificent-so peaceful".

Our guests often remark that the bed is really comfortable and they've enjoyed a restful night. Others say they like the well-equipped dine-in kitchen with its full-sized refrigerator for all the goodies they purchased at the local markets. All loved a quiet walk in the gardens and then sitting under a shady tree. This gave them clarity when writing the next part of their presentation.

There are always flowers in bloom to lift your spirits.

The view from the Cottage terrace is always changing. Yesterday it was misty and cool and then the mist lifted and beautiful views were enjoyed with a late breakfast.

The High Country in the Southern Region of Queensland has an abundance of beautiful locations to discover. Perseverance is a large body of water and provides water activities for visitors. https://www.tr.qld.gov.au/facilities-recreation/parks-gardens/parks-by-location/crows-nest-perserverance-dam Close to Hampton and Crows Nest walks in the hills and around the lake reveals many birds and flora. Closer to Fairview Cottage the Proteas are in full bloom at the moment in our garden.

When we first had the idea to provide accommodation on our property, we looked at our beautiful garden which was once a grassy paddock with only one Crepe Myrtle in the middle front yard. Visitors are now inspired by plants, landscaping and of course the views of Mount Glorious. Pathways are mobility-impaired friendly as is the accommodation. We should share this I commented to my husband. And so we did!
