This time next year we’ll be cruising around Antarctica, are you coming?

🌴 Coconut trees used to grow on Antarctica 53 million years ago.

🥶 The coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth was -89.2°C at the Russian Vostok Station in Antarctica on July 21, 1983.

🍄 Over 1,100 types of mushrooms grow in Antarctica.

🕰️ Antarctica has all of the time zones on Earth.

👨 👩 There are no indigenous people living on Antarctica, but some people do stay year-round.

👦 👧 Babies have been born on Antarctica, but they are citizens of the country of the base where they are born.

🗺️ Antarctica is not part of any country. In 1959, 12 nations signed the Antarctic Treaty to commit to preserving the continent. Now it is signed by 48 nations.

📝 The original name of Antarctica was Terra Australis – Unknown Southern Land. For 8 years, it didn’t have an official name – it was just called “The Antarctic Continent”.

🐻‍❄️ There are no polar bears in Antarctica. Polar bears only live in the Arctic.

🌳 There’s not a single tree in Antarctica.

🧊 If all the ice sheets on Antarctica melted, ocean levels would rise by 200 feet.

🐛 The largest land animal in Antarctica is the nematode worm.

🏆 The first person to reach the South Pole solo and unaided was Norwegian explorer Borge Ousland in 1996.

It was about this point in time in Deadvlei that I wished I’d done this trip 20 years ago, and walked up ‘Big Daddy’ and not been such a big sook! You know when you take a step and feel the cartlidge grinding in your knee, then remember all those times you fell over on it or was play wrestling and almost dislocated it….
Yeah just one of those days when you wished you looked after yourself better 😂

Each Christmas I’m reminded that we have too many things. Stuff we think we need but deep down we know we don’t. On my recent trip to Namibia it was a breath of fresh air and an honour to meet the people at the Omutima Himba Village. They want for nothing apart from basic needs and they continue traditions as their ancestors have done before them. To be at one with nature and see how they live was something that brought me great appreciation of my family at home & brought me peace. It was a reminder to take a step back from a busy life and enjoy simple things more. 2025 is definitely going to see some decluttering🙏
