It was a great morning spent exploring the interactive digital stories of Tour Stop 1 – The Captain's Story, Stop 2 – The Hereward Shipwreck, and Stop 3 – The Last Tram from Maroubra, located opposite the Maroubra Seals.

Come and see ‘The Captain’s Story’ on a digital walking tour and learn how Captain Poole Hickman Gore and his beloved ship, the Hereward, ran aground on Maroubra Beach in 1898. Visit the Tekapo’s anchor, recovered in 1986 and now serves as a memorial in the Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club, honouring the power of the sea.

Have you walked to Martin Place? The Cenotaph represents the sacrifices and memory of Australian soldiers who served and died in World War I. The heritage-listed monolithic stone block located in Martin Place, with two bronze statues guarding it, is inscribed with the phrase “To Our Glorious Dead” and “Lest We Forget.”

Step back in time and witness a young Australian man wrestling with the decision of whether to enlist in WWI. As he weighs the pros and cons, you’ll gain a unique perspective on the reasons behind Australians going to war and sympathise with the tough choices that individuals had to make. Did you know that Tamarama beach was initially known as Dixon Bay by early European settlers, the name was changed to Tamarama in the 1800s. Tamarama is probably a derivation of the Aboriginal name 'Gamma Gamma' (possibly meaning 'storm'), which appeared on maps of the coastline in the 1860s by the Military or Naval Authority. We have a tour please head to the kiosk, grab a coffee and enjoy your walk.

Did you know that we have 9 tourist attractions on our app that you can discover and this week we are going to highlight COOGEE.

Coogee is a relaxed coastal suburb. Its broad, sandy beach appeals to both swimmers and surfers, and the ocean pools cut into the headlands are popular with families. There are laid-back pubs and bars on the beachfront, while the surrounding streets are filled with alfresco cafes. Joggers take in dramatic ocean views on the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk. Nearby Gordon’s Bay has snorkelling trails and rich marine life.

The word 'Maroubra' comes from an Aboriginal word meaning 'like thunder' - an apt description of the sound of the waves pounding on the shoreline. These waves have made Maroubra one of the most popular surfing locations in Sydney and Australia's second only National Surfing Reserve. The beach is serviced by two surf life saving clubs, and is patrolled all year by Randwick City lifeguards. Volunteer lifesavers patrol the beach on weekends and school holidays during daylight saving months.

Our second location at Maroubra Beach is THE LAST TRAM which is situated at LETS GO SURFING hut opposite the Maroubra Seals Club on Marine Parade.

DID YOU KNOW?
That the Hereward ship was wrecked at Maroubra, New South Wales in 1898. The Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018 automatically protects the wreck and its contents, as they are more than 75 years old. If you head to the anchor located at the North End of Maroubra Beach on the footpath, scan your app and start to learn more about the British clipper ship
