They are based on my own experiences, feedback from my Clients, from literature I have studied, and knowledge gained from many sources and inspirational people. Choice: we always have a choice, especially the choice on how to respond
Wisdom: by reflecting on experiences and our progress comes true insight
Small Steps: impossible is unlikely when you give your best, take action
Support: don’t be afraid to speak up, it's important to ask for, and accept help
Passion: there’s a spark within us all, having a passion in life gives you purpose
Enjoyment: life doesn’t have to be a struggle, have some fun along the way
Accountability: be responsible for your life and the energy you project and attract
Courage: be brave, take steps to conquer your fears and vulnerabilities.

Happy New Year to everyone! 🥳 A new beginning and fresh start (we have this each and every day too!).

2023 was a turbulent one, for some full of highs, for some full of lows, and for many others a combination of it all. And no matter how it was, it was a lot.

This year is about EASE for me, how I make decisions to lower the inner negotiation, how I appreciate more (of what I have, the people around me and myself, too) and just use my breath to be present so I am connecting with where I am and how I am, and who I am with.

My one big commitment is to movement. I’d like to say I’ll do 365 days of walks with this guy, Rexie. Not sure how I’ll do it with all the travel, but when I’m home he is my start to the day, it’s always the best way to spark .

What is 2024 about for you? Love to know 💫

The power of cross-generational collaboration could propel your people and teams into a new stratosphere…

The current generation of emerging leaders are challenging many of the conventions and beliefs we grew up with. But that’s not such a bad thing. Why should anyone work 12 hours a day, stuck in the office, rinse and repeat until retirement?

Instead of rolling your eyes at the ‘entitlement of this generation’, let’s think about it.

If they’re brave enough to ask for more than we dared to at their age, well… good on them. In this era of great change, the last thing we need to do is the same thing we’ve always done.

💫 What if… in supporting the next generation of leaders, we actually find a better way to do things?

💫 What if… the best way can be found when we mentor, guide and share our wisdom, while our emerging leaders infuse their fresh perspectives and agility into reimagining the 'way things are done'?

💫 What if… by not just passing the torch to the next generation of leaders, but working together with them, we shape a leadership legacy that transcends generations and creates a better future for all?

Now that’s the kind of legacy I’d like to leave.

Your reputation is your greatest asset.

I hear a lot of talk about the importance of ‘building your brand’ - which is really just fancy marketing speak for ‘managing your reputation’. No matter what you call it though, there’s no doubt it’s important.

Reputation is everything in business, because it directly influences your ability to make an impact - to lead, to inspire and to create positive change.

Encourage your emerging leaders to think about what they really want to be known for. When they’ve reflected on the strengths they have to offer, who they are and what they value, they can communicate that and shape the way they’re perceived by others.

Some ways you can help them develop the credibility, authority and trust they need to build a winning reputation include…

💫 Provide them with the opportunity to showcase their skills and expertise

💫 Set an example by demonstrating ethical behaviour, humility and a commitment to the organisation's values.

💫 Encourage them to actively seek out feedback from others.

💫 Help them build trusted networks, both on and offline.

💫 Encourage them to be curious about other people’s opinions and ideas.

💫 Teach them to be aware of their impact on others (and how this is perceived).

💫 communication style, across all modes (including conversations on the phone!)

What’s the biggest challenge in leadership today?

Parenting. That’s right, parenting.

I don’t mean it in the traditional sense, the daily juggling of kids and work. I mean the challenge of dealing with five generations in the workplace, all parented in significantly different ways, with different perspectives, belief systems, life experiences and approaches to work.

I’ve found that this generation of emerging leaders tend to be:
💫 Anxious and impatient
💫 Ready to prove themselves (and want to be instantly rewarded when they do)
💫 Academically advanced, with an urgent need to be heard
💫 Somewhat sheltered, lacking resilience and an understanding of consequences
💫 Way more tech-savvy than their older counterparts
💫 Limitlessly, wonderfully curious
💫 Fantastically vocal about the need for diversity and authenticity
💫 More demanding of flexibility and work-life balance
💫 Less tolerant of roles that don’t give them real purpose

Despite growing up being constantly told to ‘focus’, we’re crap at it.

Learning how to focus was never covered in school - and unless your parents were into mindfulness, they probably never taught you how to do it either.

Whether it’s incoming emails, mobile messages or people stopping for a chat, we face an average of 56 disruptions per day. And unless we actively work to combat that, it can lead to missed deadlines, half-baked tasks, disastrous communications and – at worst, legal and commercial liability.

Block out dedicated time for deep work, prioritise tasks strategically and make conscious choices to combat those time-thieving distractions.

Find your focus, and you’ll find success 🎯

P.S. And for heaven’s sake, stop trying to multitask… the mental blocks created by shifting between tasks can cost as much as 40% of your time - it’s insanely inefficient!

Don’t measure yourself against someone else’s ruler 📏

Comparison breeds self-doubt, and it’s incredibly damaging. Success isn't universal – in fact, it's deeply personal. It isn’t about ticking off standardised goals, and it isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept.

When you figure out what you value in life, that’s when you can work out what success looks like for you. And chances are, it’s not going look like anyone else’s version!

💡 Tip: Try viewing ‘achievements’ not as doing more, but becoming more. You won’t be so prone to comparisons… and you’ll be a better leader (and person) for it too.

I’ve been following the media coverage, attending conversations and webinars, talking to family and friends, clients and colleagues for the YES vote and referendum that will no doubt happen in the coming months of 2023.

I’m trying to read deeply, listen to all sides of the argument, and understand what it means to the people who will be affected the most. And what it means to me, and future generations.

I must confess to not knowing many (or nearly enough) of the people directly affected by this decision. However within myself, and my own values, I see this as a step forward for giving volume to, restoring dignity, and action to our indigenous people.

From reading and listening to YES campaigners like I am echoing his words and sentiment, “I’m doing this because I genuinely believe this is going to help not just Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people but our entire nation move forward in a way that our children can be proud of, that we let go of the burden of our colonial past and made a great step towards healing.”

It’s a Yes from me.

This may go against all the sales strategies we’re told, but I always encourage potential clients to speak to other coaches, before deciding to work with me.

Coaching is such an intimate and exploratory journey, and often a large investment in your time, energy and cash, that you want to make sure you’re getting the good feels and outcomes.

It’s all about results yes - but it’s also about chemistry. A lot of the magic that coaches offer is the space they create for you (be it physical or in a virtual sense). So you have to ‘want to’ spend time with them, be it experimenting, celebrating, mulling through decisions, revealing rawness, peeling back your layers, and a throw in some laughs also. You never want to be dragging yourself to the meeting, it’s all a choice and one you’re bouncing along to.

Coaching is one of the rare relationships in your life you get to opt-in to.

It’s a set of skills they’ll continue to cultivate over time, and one of the five distinctive traits that set them apart from the pack.

Well, I’m always up for an adventure, and today I dipped my toe into guesting on .radio with . We discussed the role of guilt in leadership, when it shows up in its scabby way! And the journey that Jules and I went on way back when as I coached him for a year… tonnes on insights on how unpacking limiting thoughts, managing your energy and taking on feedback (even when it hurts) helps you be a better leader. Thanks for having me!

I asked the readers of my Experiment a little… newsletter what they wanted to know more on… and it came up that “workplace guilt” is a massive energy and brain drain for a lot of them.

I loved this HBR article on how pervasive guilt is for people in the workplace that I thought it was well worth sharing.

If left unattended, guilt can be corrosive for our confidence, capability and connection with others.

The authors offer 3 practical tips on how to manage your guide using the SOS morse code:

💫 Self: Take care of yourself before assisting others. You cannot be anything to anyone (whether boss, friend, spouse, parent, etc.) if you are a nervous wreck. Learn to prioritize. If you’ve chosen a path, don’t second guess yourself.

💫 Others: Your perfectionism may be affecting other people, too. For example, if you’re constantly pressuring yourself to perform, your team may feel guilty for not meeting your same standards.

💫 System: It’s okay to chill out and do nothing once in a while, guilt free. Don’t let your educational, cultural, or family system drive you to feeling guilty about not using every minute of every day to do something productive.

I’m on a mission to rid the workplace of the corrosive effects of guilt.

I’ve created a 90 minute facilitated workshop that helps identify when guilt shows up, understand it and manage it differently. It provides the tools to help build a different relationship to guilt and yourself.

The session covers the systems in the workplace and how societal conditioning isn't supporting women (and other minorities) to overcome their guilt. Plus how we can all champion each other to be more courageous, direct and true to ourselves in the workplace.

I highly recommend that everyone in the workplace attends, this isn’t a closed door ‘women only’ session. We all need to support and be allies to each other.

Want to know how to turn self-reflection into a superpower?

Leaders often come to me because they believe their team isn’t working. They’re not getting the results expected of them, or behaving the way they should. They ask me ‘why’ it’s happening and how they can fix it.

But most of the time the real issue doesn’t lie only with their team.

The real problem is usually staring them right in the face - literally. Sometimes it takes a long look in the mirror for leaders to be able to see the root cause, which is how their own actions are impacting those around them.

To help them do that, there’s a coaching technique I use called ‘reflective inquiry’, and it turns self-reflection into a super-power.

The good news is, you can practice this technique on your own – you don’t need me!

If you want to learn how to consider situations in a deeper way, examine your underlying biases and develop new perspectives, there are four powerful questions you need to ask yourself. And ‘Why?’ isn’t one of them.
