Can't get out to Walk-Stop-Sketch! The perfect pastime on these very wet winter days is to pull out some colour media and take some time to sit and play. What will you create? I spent an afternoon capturing one of the regular visitors we have in our garden, the lovely Western Rosella! So very colourful and a whole lot of fun to draw.

The Australian winter…sketching and painting realistic-style leaves is always an enjoyable experience at this time of the year. The winter sun catches the hues of green, gold, and amber, enticing you to pick up your pencils and brushes. If the weather gets too wet and you can’t work outside, bring nature inside, capture those glorious images with your favourite digital device or pick a few leaves which will inspire and challenge you.

Winter sunshine wander this morning through the vegetable garden, crisp air, damp soil and fresh greens. The perfect inspiration for some watercolour painting, what a way to spend a lazy Sunday...sipping chai tea and painting for the joy of it!

Persimmons, an Autumn fruit, a lovely word - looks like a big tomato and tastes like…hmm melon perhaps.

Sketching persimmons in a crystal bowl with watercolour

Using graphite and fine line ink marker I drew the shape of the bowl, loosely making marks to represent the cut glass patterns

Then drew in 3 persimmons giving them a couple of light washes with warm red and yellow and mixed cobalt blue and burnt sienna for the tops

Strengthening the patterns on bowl with ink marker for a chunky effect then giving it a thin pale wash with blue/brown for depth and shadows

Finally a few dabs of white gouache on the fruit and bowl for highlights.

The last of the autumn leaves are letting go twirling and whirling to the ground like confetti at a wedding.

Sketching with coloured pencils

Draw your leaf shapes with graphite or ink markers

Choose warm colours, sketching lightly with directional hatching and cross hatching to show form

Gradually build up layers of colour, progressively pressing harder with sharp tip of coloured pencils to achieve a burnished effect in some areas for the desired finish you are happy with

Happy relaxing colouring.
