Tax Information and lodging a tax return for Backpackers and Working Holidaymakers in Australia

Australia operates under a tax system of Pay-As-You-Go. Meaning that instead of paying one lump sum of tax at the end of the tax year, the employer withholds the appropriate amount of tax from your wages. The payslip provided by your employer usually provides details of the amount of salary paid and the amount of tax withheld. At the end of the financial year (30th of June), you have to submit a tax return to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). This allows the ATO to calculate whether you have paid enough taxes on the wages you earned. If you have paid less than you should, you get a tax bill. If you have paid more taxes than you should, you get a tax refund.

What is superannuation?
Superannuation is a compulsory retirement saving that is paid by your employer. It is compulsory for employers to pay a minimum of 9.5% of your wages in superannuation if
- you are over 18, and
- earn more than $450 a month from that employer.

It does not matter if you are working as permanent or casual, or if your resident or non-resident for tax purposes. Your employer must pay superannuation for you if you meet the above criteria.

The superannuation paid by your employer is taxed at 15% by the ATO

Superannuation for overseas workers, backpackers and travellers doing casual work should still get paid Super, its the same as permanent or casual workers who are residents or non-residents for tax purposes. Your employer must pay superannuation to you if you meet the above criteria.
