Stanley Seal Cruises & Charters Experience a spectacular 75 minute cruise to view the Australian Fur Seals in their natural habitat

Darryl and Heather, your hosts, offer short, personalized cruises aboard the 40ft ‘Sylvia C’ to view the wholly protected Australian fur seal (Artocephalus pusillus), from the wharf in Stanley, North Western Tasmania. Leaving from the pontoon at the fisherman's dock, the 75 minute scenic cruise takes in spectacular views of the Stanley Nut, the unique township, the old pioneer cemetery and Godfrey

’s Beach. Historic farmlands extend to the waterline below, where ocean-eroded caves scatter the shoreline. The destination is Bull Rock, a non-breeding ground or haul-out, 600 metres offshore. Here, up to 500 seals bask in the sunshine or frolic playfully in the crystal-clear waters of Bass Strait. This is the most common seal in Tasmanian waters and breeds from October to January on rocky outcrops, extending from King Island, in the North West, to Tenth Island in the North Eastern corner. Hunted almost to extinction last century, the population recovery of the largest and fourth-rarest seal species in the world, has been slow and the mammal is now wholly protected. Ironically the seal is now a great source of enjoyment for tourists visiting Stanley.

General information

Australian Fur Seals use Bull Rock as their ‘haul-out’ or ‘holiday’ rock in Seal terms. The Great White Shark is the natural preditor of the Australian Fur Seal. The Bull Seals vary in size from 200-350kgs, while the females are around 180-200kgs. The Pups are born between November 15 and December 30 each year. They range in size from 7-9kgs at birth. The Pups suckle the female up to 12 months. At approximately 6-8 weeks, The Pups have retained enough body fat and weight, at which time they are ready to enter the water. Twin Pups have been born on Bull Rock, which is very rare, but in one year 3 sets have been sighted. Bull Rock, not being a breeding ground, Seals can be viewed within 100 metres of the Rock, and seals approach the boat on arrival. Black Faced Cormorants, Pacific Gulls, Oyster Catchers, and Arctic Turns can also be viewed at Bull Rock. Australasian Gannets if following their food chain close to shore, and Bottle Nose Dolphins are often viewed on the cruise.
