What is Life Begins at Fifty? Life begins at Fifty is an online community where people aged fifty plus can discuss and share opinions on a range of issues that interest us. Covering a broad range of topics like travel, finance, health and wellbeing, fashion and entertainment, we want to explore these areas in a way that’s highly relevant to people in our age group. We aim to have all of our storie

s written specifically for our community members, and ideally, get people in our community writing about topics that they are passionate about. If you have an ardent love for a topic, or have an experience you’d like to share, we’d love to have you share your thoughts with other people in the community. Life Begins at Fifty will be more than a website. We will also be holding events so you can meet other members of the community face to face, and hear from speakers who will cover topics that matter to you. The people behind Life Begins at Fifty work with businesses and organisations to help them connect with their customers, and develop better services and products for them. Life Begins at Fifty started as a genuine desire to bring businesses and the fifty plus demographic closer together. It aims to give fifty plus a strong voice to help create and shape products and services. We want to break the stereotypes that exist about people aged fifty and beyond and give us some visibility. Through the community there will be opportunities to contribute directly with companies to shape ideas for products and services in categories like finance, entertainment, architecture, health and fitness and travel. The sorts of people we would love to have involved are energetic, active and curious. We want people who are interested in hearing the ideas and opinions of other people, as well a sharing their own experiences and thoughts on a topic. We hope it grows into a place where you’ll learn about new ideas, get great tips, and be able to contribute to the discussion yourself. If you are keen to get involved and become a member please visit lifebeginsatfifty.com.au

Amongst so many other things that we have lost in these horrendous fires, people most importantly- way too many homes, businesses, livelihoods, and a million + animals...to also hear that we may lose an entire species of an indigenous animal is incredibly distressing.

Dams, drought and climate change have pushed one of the world's most unusual creatures to edge of oblivion, according to new research.

DO PEOPLE ONLY USE 10% OF THEIR BRAINS?
People throw this number around all the time, but what does this even mean? Up front, it’s important to note that the brain is an incredibly energy-hungry organ. It’s generally about 3% of your body weight, but it uses 20-25% of the energy you expend each day.

The source of this figure isn’t entirely clear. One possibility is that it refers to the proportion of the brain that consists of neurons (which are cells that send electrical signals and process the brain’s information) to supporting structure (including fluid and cells that insulate neurons and repair damage). It is true that neurons are only one of a number of different kinds of cells and structures in the brain. But, all of this structure is important for the functioning of the brain.

Another possibility is that people are referring to the capacity of the brain. That is, perhaps people are only using 10% of their potential. A better way to think about this, though, is people’s capacity to develop any skill is a combination of practice and talent (where talent refers to the capacity a person has to achieve in that domain).

A simple rule to keep in mind is that you can get quite good at almost any skill (whether it is a thinking-based skill, a musical skill, or a physical skill) if you practice hard at it. However, if your goal is to be among the best in the world at something, you had better also have some talent for it.
