We were honoured to do the Cunard Queen Elizabeth II Ship inspection earlier this month. It is a beautiful ship and am so excited for my group to be cruising Japan and Korea this beauty in April.
They have really interesting itineraries.

Cruising is at the heart of what we do, so we jump at any chance to check out incredible cruise experiences up close. Earlier this month, 13 of our superstar PTMs (plus one lucky NPO team member) were buzzing with excitement as they spent a day aboard Cunard's glamorous Queen Elizabeth during her stop in Sydney 🛳️✨🌏

✨ 12 days of Christmas ✨
Let’s countdown to Christmas with unique festive traditions from a different destination around the world each day!

Day 5: South Africa 🇿🇦
Christmas in South Africa is as colourful and vibrant as the Rainbow Nation itself. You can experience traditional Northern Hemisphere elements like twinkling lights and carol singing (such as those seen on Cape Town’s Adderley Street and at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens), while enjoying the warmth of the summer season. Many South Africans spend Christmas Day at the beach, enjoying the outdoors and a festive meal ☀️

A staple of South African culture is the braai: a wood or charcoal-fired cookout where perfectly grilled meat, often lamb or chicken, takes centre stage. Roasted whole suckling pig is another popular choice for some families' Christmas dinner, ideally followed by a generous serving of Malva pudding with custard. Other traditional foods include milk tart, koeksisters and a variety of salads. Christmas in South Africa is a true celebration of summer, family and community.

Kolkata, India
I organised a private customised tour in Kolkata for our last day as I wanted to visit specific places that is not in the usual tours. Our tour guide, Malini was amazing.

1. Our journey began at the poignant Indentured Labourers “Girmitiyas” Memorial at Kolkata port, and it was an experience that deeply moved us. Standing at this historic site, we were struck by the weight of the stories it held—this very port was the departure point for countless Girmitiyas, sent off by the British to distant lands like Fiji, Mauritius, Trinidad, and Suriname.

These individuals signed a five-year agreement (this word “agreement” became “girmit”), lured by the promise of golden opportunities. Instead, they faced grueling labor in the unforgiving sugar cane fields, a grim reality that felt like slavery. It was heartbreaking to reflect on the resilience and suffering of those who were promised so much but received so little in return.

As we walked among the memorial’s stark yet powerful reminders, we felt an urgent need to honor these lives and share their stories, which are often absent from our school curriculums. This chapter of history may be overshadowed, but it deserves to be remembered and acknowledged. Our visit was a reminder of the enduring impact of colonialism and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

2. 15th century Shaktipeeth Kalighat Kali Temple visit was next and to our pleasant surprise there was hardly any crowd which made it extremely easy to visit the temple and have darshan.

3. Next stop was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose house which has been converted into a very interesting museum. His achievements as a freedom fighter to help India gain independence is truly beyond words.

4. The first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature Ravindra Nath Tagore’s house, now museum was our next stop. He was a Bengali poet, short-story writer, song composer, playwright, essayist and painter. His very talented family of 250 lived in this huge house.

5. Next stop was the drive over the famous Howrah Bridge to Belur to visit the Ramakrishna Mission Belur Math. Which was also adorned with colourful Diwali lights. As soon as you enter the gates, you can feel the peace and calm, meditative ambience of this beautiful kept huge area. We visited the temples of Ramakrishna and Swani Vivekanand temple along the Hooghly River. A place well worth visiting in Kolkata.

6. Next on the tour was the Dakshineswar Temple. Dakshineswar Kali temple has 12 dome. Twelve temples of Lord Shiva have been established around this huge temple. The temple of Mother Kali is situated on the terrace in the form of a huge building.

7. We strolled through the vibrant streets, which were alive with Diwali festivities. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the joyful sounds of celebration. Music filled the air while dazzling lights and decorations adorned every corner, creating a magical ambiance, a true reflection of the spirit of Diwali.

As we drove to the airport for our flight home, the festivities of Diwali celebrations bid us farewell and we carried with us memorable memories of this wonderful place.

DAY 7 of the Brahmaputra River Cruise

Today, we experienced the once royal kingdom of Assam along the Brahmaputra that is Sibsagar, which also served as the capital of the Ahom kings. Sibsagar serves as a testament to the Ahoms' enduring legacy and the unique blend of Indian and Southeast Asian influences that shaped their culture. Shan by origin but later converted to Hinduism, the Ahoms ruled Assam for some 600 years until the mid-1820s. One of their many architectural feats was recently awarded the UNESCO World Heritage tag.

We visited temples with stupa-like profiles and palaces of distinctive form. The temple tank here is believed to be the world’s largest hand-excavated reservoir and quite the feat of engineering.
On our return to the ship, which had cruised down to Neamati Ghat, close to Jorhat.

We were treated to yet another wonderful range of delicious food which was also our farewell dinner hosted by wonderful crew.

Our last night on the ABN cruise ended with tea/coffee in the saloon.

Day 6 of the mighty Brahmaputra River Cruise
Today we visited the biggest river island, Majuli Island and visited 2 satras, a high school, mask making satra.
We reached Majuli Island around breakfast time. One of the world’s largest river islands and a microcosm of Assamese culture, Majuli is much-photographed but little-visited. It is a stronghold of the peaceful religion of neo-Vaishnavism and the elegant island satra’s (or known as monasteries) dating back to the 15th century. These satra’s have played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Assamese art, culture, and traditions. The celibate monks showcase a unique way of life where the faithful live simply, offering worship through gayan-bayan (songs and musical instruments), dance-drama and recitation of scriptures.

We visited a monastery at Auniati with its eclectic museum, then attended a dance performance at Kamalabari monastery before we cruised up to Salmara Ghat.
Another satra we enjoyed visiting is Samaguri Satra which is very famous for mask making, the art has been handed down by generations and we were very privileged to meet with the Padmashree recipient, Shree Hem Chandra Goswami, the satradhikar or religious and administrative head of the Samaguri Satra in Majuli was selected for the award for his painstaking efforts to revive the traditional masks of Assam.

In the afternoon, we visited a nearby village known for its traditional handicrafts such as hand made pottery and handlooms.
The early evening we were entertained by an international multitalented Niranjan who played various flutes, drum and dance.

The day wrapped up with a delightful tandoori dinner on the sandy banks. The staff truly outdid themselves, creating a stunning setup complete with twinkling lights and a cozy bonfire under the stars. As we savored our meal, we attempted to spot and identify planets in the clear night sky, all while the soothing sounds of Assamese and English classics played in the background. It was a magical evening to remember.
Looking forward to tomorrow and the new highlights of this amazing trip.
