Japan: A Journey Through Time in Shirakawa-go
Our adventure began with a sleek bullet train (Shinkansen) ride from Kyoto to Nagoya, then onward to Takayama, a journey that felt like travelling through the pages of a living history book.
The real magic happened the next morning when we woke early and hopped on a 50-minute bus ride to Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site that looks like it's been perfectly preserved from another era.
Stepping into a village where traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses stand exactly as they have for centuries. These incredible structures, with their steep thatched roofs that look like hands pressed in prayer, were brilliantly designed to shed massive snowfalls that blanket the region.
Japan's rural Shirakawa-go isn't just a destination, it's a time machine wrapped in mountain mist and wooden beams. We visited in November and were in awe of the autumnal hues.
