Did you know that the longest living whale is the bowhead whale?

Bowhead whales are considered the longest-living mammals, living for over 200 years. Researchers think bowheads have gene mutations that repair their DNA better than other species. DNA gradually mutates with age and environmental factors. Repairing the damaged strands may allow bowheads to live such a long life.

We also know that repairing damaged DNA might be the key to preventing cancers. Cancer rates are very low in large baleen whales. Understanding their genome could thus help research on human cancer in the future.
