Just got home from John Sepulveda’s 60 Years in Martial Arts celebration that his students put together for him in San Jose on Saturday. It was great seeing all my friends from his AKTS group again as well as Alan Henderson and Lee Wedlake. There were seminars during the early part of the day that Lee Wedlake, myself, and of course John Sepulveda taught at. Then the evening had a banquet with in person speakers and video messages of appreciation and support of John’s contributions and leadership in the AKTS and the Kenpo community. A very well put on event for a person loved and respected by many.

Spent some time this afternoon in San Antonio to attend the 80th Birthday Bash of my friend, mentor, and old instructor Gary Swan which was put on by his advanced students. I have known this man for 52 years and he took me from Purple Belt through 4th Black and has been a blessing in my life. So happy to have been able to share this time with him today…he looks great and taught at my annual camp last month…still inspiring people after all these years, including me.

2024 AKF Texas Spirit Camp Instructor Profile = Brian Duffy

My name is Brian Duffy and I am the producer of the AKF Texas Spirit Camp...but I am also one of the instructors at the camp. I have been teaching martial arts in Austin, Texas for 51 years and have been practicing martial arts for 54 years. I have been blessed with having excellent instructors. My primary instructor, who took me from Purple Belt to 4th Degree Black and developed in me a strong foundation and training ethic, Gary Swan, is one of the best martial artists I have seen...and I have taught and competed all over the US as well as South America and Europe, so my evaluation of his abilities and expertise is based on a broad exposure to many other fine practitioners. Mr. Swan will be teaching at this year’s camp again and I previously posted an instructor profile on him. Through my relationship with Mr. Swan I was introduced to respected Kenpo Seniors Sigung Stephen LaBounty (RIP), Sibok Tom Kelly (RIP), as well as system founder Ed Parker (RIP). My initial interaction with Sigung LaBounty and Sibok Tom Kelly both came at training camps...as well as interaction with many other fine instructors from the National Chinese Kenpo Karate Association. My initial interaction with Mr. Parker came at seminars I attended in Arizona and Texas and later produced bringing him here to Austin twice a year and ultimately being accepted as his personal student. My relationship with Mr. Parker opened up opportunities to interact with a larger group of fine instructors from all over the world. I have had the pleasure and benefit of interacting with not only these fine gentlemen mentioned above but also John Sepulveda, Richard Huk Planas, Frank Trejo (RIP), Bob White (RIP), Bob Liles, Bryan Hawkins, Lee Wedlake, Jeff Speakman, Jack Autry, Dennis Conatser, Dian Tanaka, Ted Sumner, Raymond McCallum, Mikie Rowe Moore, Coach Ron Beer, and a host of others

My personal expression of the art has been influenced not only by my teachers but also my many mentors, seniors, fellow camp instructors, workout partners, and students. When Mr. Parker died he left no single successor. No one person has it all...but EVERY instructor has SOMETHING OF VALUE to offer. I have benefited from every person I have shared the mat with as either a student or an instructor...and I am thankful to all.

I have been involved in training camps since 1974...first as a participant, later as an instructor, then a camp coordinator, and finally as a producer of my own camps for over 30 years now. I started producing my own camps to offer my students the same exposure to great instructors that I have experienced. You can see by the many (RIP)’s in the text of this post that the opportunity to get this type of exposure does not last forever. Take advantage of any opportunities you have to expand your knowledge base while those opportunities are still available...go to seminars and camps and work with people outside your normal training group...explore differing perspectives...remember Mr. Parker’s saying: “The mind is like a parachute, it works best when it is open.” My wife Lee has a saying that applies well to this theme “You have to be present to win.”

2024 AKF Texas Spirit Camp Instructor Profile - Jack Autry

Jack Autry

On November 6, 2022 Jack Autry was presented with the Kenpo Legacy Award from Bryan Hawkins and the United Kenpo Systems. It reads…

“For over 55 years of promulgating the IKKA and the IKC during the time of Mr. Ed Parker and the years following his passing,
For promoting the Sport Karate aspects of Ed Parker Kenpo by becoming a highly successful revered and feared tournament fighter for many years,
For being a true Renaissance Man in American Kenpo and seeking out, studying, and attaining expertise in various forms of self defense and personal protection,
We of the United Kenpo Systems, Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate, and the American Kenpo community salute you.”

Jack Autry has spent 56 years studying, teaching, competing and spreading the art of Kenpo Karate. During that time he has seen the development and evolution of the art through 23 years while Mr. Parker was alive and now for 33 more since his passing. This is a brief recap of his journey in his own words…

In 1967 my entire life changed when I walked into the West Los Angeles (Santa Monica) Kenpo Karate School and met Mr. Ed Parker. I asked him “What is Kenpo Karate?” After a very short demonstration I became a true believer. I signed up immediately and have never looked back.

After about 1 ½ years Mr. Parker called me off the mat and said “I have a favor to ask you. I have just completed a new colored belt system and I would like you to start over”…
“Yes Sir” was about all I could say.
(Editor’s note – this is just one of those development and evolution of the art stages that Mr. Autry has personally witnessed in his tenure.)

Mr. Parker introduced me to Bruce Lee. Bruce spent some time showing me how to do his 1 inch punch. He told me that he only weighed 135 pounds. I weighed 230 pounds. He said once I teach you this technique you will be able to hit with 100 more pounds than me. I practiced that move for thousands of times before performing it in one of my classes with shocking results.

In 1972 Mr. Tom Kelly (R.I.P.) was running the West Los Angeles School. We had so many fighters in our school that we chartered a bus to go to the California State Championships in Northern California. Mr. Kelly won 1st place in the Heavy Weight Black Belt Division and I won 1st place in the Heavy Weight Brown Belt Division. At that time he was my instructor. My fighting improved by sparring with him 2 or 3 times a week, for years.

Mr. Elvis Presley, at that time, had been a student of Mr. Parker for many years. He was a 5th Degree Black Belt, and he asked Mr. Parker if he could spar with me. Mr. Parker said he would set it up and 2 weeks later Elvis entered the school as I was working out. At that point Mr. Parker called me off the mat to tell me that he would like me to spar with Elvis and added: Put the body shots in hard but don’t hit him in the face. After 35 minutes of sparring, we were walking off the mat and Elvis was shaking his head “NO”. I asked what was wrong. His answer was “no one else has ever made me look like that, I could not hit you with anything.” I answered: Don’t feel bad I have been fighting semi-professional for 5 years. He then asked me if I would go to work for him. I thanked him very much and told him: “That would be an honor but I must say no thank you Sir because I have a wife, 5 kids, and a construction company to run.”

I was promoted to Black Belt by Mr. Parker on March 30, 1974 with my cousin Lincoln Conti. Also in the test, in the back row were a couple of guys going for Brown Belt: Frank Trejo and Larry Tatum. I am very proud to be one of Mr. Parker’s first generation Black Belts, one of only 126, and of which only 6 are still active in Kenpo Karate today.

When Mr. Parker died in 1990, I was promoted to 5th Degree Black Belt and then subsequently over the years to 6th, 7th, and 8th. This past July 2022 I was promoted to 9th Degree Black Belt by two gentlemen I love and respect very much: Mr. John Sepulveda and Mr. Jeff Speakman. Both men are 10th Degree Black Belts and have built the 2 largest Kenpo Karate organizations in the world. I am so proud to call them both truly lifelong and great friends.

In 1991 after the premier showing of the movie “The Perfect Weapon”, Mrs. Parker presented me with the T.C.B. necklace that was given to Mr. Parker by Elvis Presley, saying that her husband would want me to have it...I never take it off.

In 1987 I earned the rank of Shodan (Black Belt) by the International IAI TATE DO Federation. My instructor was Mr. Kiyoshi Yamazaki (IAI TATE DO stands for The Art of Drawing and Cutting with the Samurai sword).

In 1995 I became a certified NRA fi****ms instructor for pistol, rifle, and shotgun.

In 1998 I was presented with the Senior Ambassador of the Arts Award by Dr. Ron Chapel, Edmund Parker Jr., and the Board of Directors of the Ed Parker Institute of American Kenpo.

On June 24, 2023 I was inducted into the Kenpo Karate Hall Of Fame in Las Vegas, Nevada, nominated by Mr. Chuck Sullivan, 10th Degree Black Belt and presented by Mr. Paul Casey.

I would like to close by sharing a couple of my thoughts:
Rarely does anyone speak about how much Mr. Ed Parker loved Jesus Christ. His 4 priorities in life were, in this order: God, Family, Country, Kenpo. These are four of the most important things I learned from him. I became a Born-Again Christian after following his lead for over 23 years.
R.I.P. my beloved brother.

Last thought;
How is our world a better place to live in because of you being in it?

We are very pleased to have Jack Autry back again this year to share his Kenpo history and knowledge.

2024 AKF Texas Spirit Camp - Instructor Profile - Dee Swan

Dee Swan, a New Jersey transplant, born again Texan, arrived at Randolph Air Force Base, joined a local karate school, and married the instructor!
(And married now for 40 years, Gary still mutters, “Of all the karate joints in the world, you had to walk into mine…”).
Their studio, Kenpo Karate of Universal City, Texas, has been in operation at the same location for 50 years.
Dee holds the rank of 7th degree black and has been training for 42 years (teaching both children and adults). As Secretary of the National Chinese Kenpo Karate Association, she has organized dozens of outdoor training camps (and an occasional chili cook-off!) Dee teaches seminars in the local community, and was a rated tournament competitor in the 80’s (competing throughout Texas and Arizona).
Dee has a teaching certificate in History & Geography from Texas State University, and was a Combat Arms Instructor in the Air Force. She assists Gary on the firing range for the Texas License-to-Carry Certification classes, and serves, along with Gary, on their church’s security team. And, whenever possible, she and Gary take their two Harley Davidson motorcycles out on America’s most scenic and challenging rides!
As a follower of the Lord Jesus, and a teacher of the Bible, Dee has participated in several overseas mission trips sharing the gospel in Argentina, Peru, England, and on the Island of Malta.

We are very pleased to have Dee Swan as a member of our teaching staff this year.

Had a great AKF Mini Camp today with 8 folks in attendance. Today was a curriculum review session. We started out with a good stretch routine then worked basics including blocks and punches from a training horse and the 110 repitions of basic kicks. We then worked all techniques, with partners on both the right and left side, from Yellow through Green. As we finished each belt level we worked the forms and sets for that level including: Blocking Set 1 & 2, Kicking Set 1, Moving Blocking Set, Stance Set 1, Coordination Set 1 &2, Striking Set 1, Finger Set 1, Linear Short 1, Short 1, Long 1, Short 2, Long 2, Short 3, Staff Form 1, Staff Form 2 (Parts A & B ), and Staff Form 3. It was a busy day…the guys were on the mat from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM with about a 1 hour break for lunch. Trying get a couple of these folks ready to test for Brown and another couple of them for Black at our annual Texas Spirit Camp coming up September 13, 14, & 15 this year. I had a discussion with all the guys getting ready to test about their progress on their thesis and personal forms after the camp to try to keep them on a good training schedule. We have one more mini camp scheduled for August 17 before the annual camp to keep the progress going. Folks in attendance today were Michael Laky, Darth Coots, Matt Wood, Roman Dudley, Johann Sereno, Mary Rodriguez, Allen Hill Gowdey, all AKF guys, and our good friend Randy Blake from the AKTS. Lots of good work and effort by everyone today.

We had a good warm up with some stretching, cardio, rhythmic striking drills, and then hand pads. Took a look at all the “Storm” techniques and then worked on Staff Forms 1 thru 6. Good day with a lot of hard work from the group. Another couple of mini camps, one in June and another in August, before the annual AKF Texas Spirit Camp on Sept 13, 14, & 15 this year.
