A magnificent view of Wineglass Bay was a fitting reward for Bill and Val Barlow’s hike to the top of The Hazards – the mountain range running along the spine of Freycinet Peninsula on Tasmania’s beautiful east coast.

In the late 1950s, an audacious SA farmer named Murray McCourt engineered a cutting through a range of hills to ‘drain the swamp’. About three years and a one km long and 28 metres deep trench later, the swamp became the most productive 1000 acres (seen in the background) on Woakwine Station. To add even more audacity to this engineering tale, at one stage some rockfalls were threatening to block the channel, so Murray’s (then) young son Michael (pictured on the left) was sent over the edge dangling by a rope held by two very strong and trusted mates, to strategically and gingerly place some explosives at the source of the blockage. A two-minute fuse later, and the problem was solved.

According to very proud local grazier, Peter Bowling, these 4-legged and very contented King Island residents will put on 3 kg a day grazing this beautiful pasture. Given the wonderful local produce on offer throughout the Southern Sojourn tour this June, some members of the group reckoned they just about matched that impressive weight gain.

The Southern Sojourners jetting off to spectacular King Island in the middle of Bass Strait. With no regional airlines flying this route, the one hour charter flight from Mount Gambier, in the southeast of SA, saved the best part of a day in travel time.
