Two artists on Coochiemudlo Island are on the list of finalists for the 2024 Redland Art Awards! That's a great achievement for Merrett Keech (Last Line of Defence, 2024, acrylic) and Neil Hann (Rocks Beneath a Mangrove tree, 2024, acrylic). Congratulations Merrett and Neil 👏

Finalists in the prestigious biennial Redland Art Awards have been announced, with their work to go on display from 8 December. Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said the biennial awards received more than 400 entries this year from across Australia, from which the 55 finalists were selected. “The f...

Moody greys, blues, greens and more 🩶on Coochiemudlo today, actually all week!

These pics start from Main Beach on the south then meander up the east side to Morwong Beach on the north. That’s where I found the cottonwood flowers. Gorgeous 💛🧡
Flick through for a splash of human interventionist colour from the island’s yarn bombers 🌈 . Their work is called Tree of Many Hearts.
It looks one of White Bellied Sea Eagles got a catch!

Ever wondered where our tap water on Coochiemudlo Island comes from? Here's an article that answers that question!

Without water, life as we know it would not exist. Coochiemudlo Island’s water arrives to the island via a complex grid that services the Redlands Coast islands and mainland communities. This article offers insight to where our water comes from.

An event, Shorebirds of Coochiemudlo, happened this morning. A group of residents and visitors to the island met at Morwong Beach on the north of the island and walked west to the mangroves, and to the north-eastern corner of the island. A few birds were spotted: a pair of oystercatchers, a striated heron.

Two dogs were also spotted on the beach.

Population increases on the island, including dog numbers of course, could be a reason why our shorebird numbers have decreased.

This article from January 2024 is about erosion on Coochiemudlo Island, how the natural replenishment of sand back onto our island's beaches is not occuring like it's expected to do after a storm surge. Theproblem for our shoreline erosion is likely from the changing sea-floor geography, a result of human intervention including Moreton Bay's diminished oyster colonies. This article sits neatly next to the video posted below by Quandamooks artist Megan Cope. Her artwork acts as a habitat for new oyster growth. https://coochiemudloisland.com.au/article-collection/the-impact-of-coastal-erosion-in-moreton-bay

The impact of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald on Coochiemudlo Island in 2013 has had lasting effects on the environment and community.

She’s immaculate, thanks to Jeff, her owner, who is sitting in the back with son, Mitch. This special vintage car has been in Jeff’s family since he was 17 years old.

Today is National Threatened Species Day ... a day to reflect on how many of the world's species, plants and animals, are in decline. The linked page includes info specific to Coochiemudlo with a spotlight on managing weeds that are overtaking many areas on the island. Being aware is an important start.

This page is intended to help us best manage the problems of invasive animals and weeds. Be informed, understand, act. Our island, like other places, is easily overcome by invasive species that overtake the natural environment.

Dog owners in Queensland are hit with fines if they let their pets off leash in areas where this is not allowed. Coochiemudlo Island, like other islands in the Redlands Coast, has specific rules ... we have one off-leash beach (west of the barge, Main Beach) BUT the rules change throughout the year. From September, dogs must be on-leash at all times ... just so you know 😎🐾

A good crowd turned out this morning for the Coochiemudlo Island Heritage Society AGM and Emerald Fringe celebration, down on Main Beach west of the barge ramp. A highlight was the keynote address by Catherine Brouwer, landscape planner and heritage landscape architect. Catherine was integral to the original heritage application for the island’s Emerald Fringe. She’s provided ongoing support!

Catherine spoke about the importance of heritage, that it is not just history. Heritage involves many important layers like artistic, recreational, and spiritual attachment to the place. It’s relevant to both residents and visitors to the island, to everyone. Our location in Quandamooka Country is a part of it. Like any important relationship, the one we have with our heritage-listed Emerald Fringe brings responsibility. It deserves respect. Managing a place starts with knowing the place, caring for it. Any future ‘development’ should speak to the landscape and community and not just be left to the local council.

The community needs to remain attentive so the Emerald Fringe is not diminished over time.

Our friends at the Native Nursery on Coochiemudlo Island work diligently, tirelessly, and with love, to propogate an extensive range of native species that thrive on the island.

They launched a new website this week and it’s fantastic, with beautiful images of the available species, and more!

It’s a great resource. Have a look at the site to see for yourself and to find out where the nursery is located 🌱👍💚
https://www.nativenursery.org.au/

We acknowledge the Quandamooka people, the traditional owners of the land on which our nursery is located. We pay respect to their culture and to Elders past and present.
