One of current guides is Tara Carroll, who has been with The Round Earth Company since 2016.

Tara joined the company with extensive experience performing in live theatre and film in Tasmania, and occasionally Tara takes time off to work on other projects or to go and study film in New York.

Tara’s favourite ruin on Sarah Island is the Solitary Confinement Gaol. Follow the link to find out about the punishments handed out to the convicts.

Introducing Ollie Gorringe, our most recent Sarah Island guide, who has been with The Round Earth Company since November 2019.

Ollie joined the company in order to further his love of acting by performing in The Ship That Never Was. Learning and conducting guided tours of the Macquarie Harbour Penal Settlement has enabled Ollie to add another skill to his repertoire of talents.

Follow the link to find out about Ollie’s favourite character from Sarah Island – Tasmania’s famous bushranger, Matthew Brady

Hi there 👋
Just a quick update...
We will be keeping our gates closed for the month of July so that we can continue with our annual shut down and clean up plans.
During this time we maintain and service our machinery, give the mill a really good “spring clean” and cut and rack timber using the saws and machinery that we’re not able to use whilst we have people wandering and browsing.
We’ll also be busy starting to make our own stock, ready for when we re-open 🛍
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, and don’t forget we can send you any goodies you might like.
Stay safe and warm over Winter and we look forward to seeing your smiling faces very soon 😀

One of our wonderful guides and actors, Franz Docherty, has been with the company since we started in Strahan in 1994, as one of the first actors to perform The Ship That Never Was ⚓️

Franz has worked for the company on and off over many many years as a valued actor and guide, when he’s not writing screenplays with his lovely wife Belinda 👏

He’s an awesome bloke, and hopefully you’ll get to meet him the next time you are in the audience for the play, or taking a tour around Sarah Island.

Here Franz tells us what captivates him about Sarah Island...

Well, the pandemic has stopped us in our tracks, but we thought we'd share some work recently completed on the Sarah Island tracks.
Do you see what we did there? 😆

The Living Trails team of Alex, Adrian, Jordan, Kerry and Alasdair (not pictured) have done a wonderful job tidying up pathways and creating a new boardwalk at the Shipyards. Great job team! 👏

In 1994, The Round Earth Company was invited to establish a performance program for travellers and visitors to Strahan and to Sarah Island in Macquarie Harbour. Daily performances of The Ship That Never Was began, followed by the Company's guided tours on the island.

The writer and creator of these wonderful experiences was Richard Davey. He became a long time resident of Strahan for 20 years, and was hugely passionate about the West Coast and its stories.

Richard passed away seven years ago today. He is enormously missed each and every day ❤️

Island clean up 💪

Our guides are not only skilled in hosting tours on Sarah Island, and many also perform in The Ship That Never Was held in Strahan each evening, but they are also committed to the conservation of the island.

These are just some of the items collected during a recent clean up on Sarah. Big applause guys! 👏

There are few obvious ruins on Sarah Island today, but those that remain are fascinating. Most of the buildings were of timber construction which have been removed or rotten.

Detailed images of the settlement do exist, painted by the artists who served time on the island. The Round Earth Company tour guides are tasked with creating a picture of the people who loved and worked there 📜

The guided tour is included as part of the full-day cruise on the Gordon River, operated by World Heritage Cruises, Strahan, Tasmania and Gordon River Cruises ⚓️

"Liberty or Death!!"

The Round Earth Company tells the dramatic and hilarious true story of the great escape from Sarah Island in the nightly performance of The Ship That Never Was ⛵️

Australia's longest running play has been performed at the Richard Davey Amphitheatre in Strahan since 1994, and can be seen from September to May. Audience participation is a must! 🎭

Not to be missed!

Beautiful Sarah Island on Tasmania's West Coast 🌿

Does this look like 'Hell on Earth'? Surely not...
Between 1822 and 1833 this isolated island was a place of harsh punishment, serving as a penal settlement in a brutal environment.

The Round Earth Company has been conducting guided tours on Sarah Island for over 25 years, included as part of the full-day cruise down the Gordon River.

It's a must-do! ✅
