What an unforgettable day for the students of Tagai State College and Kaziw Meta aboard "The World" Cruise Ship! 🚢🌍 It was such a privilege for Strait Experience to coordinate this unique opportunity for our local youth from Tagai State College and Torres Strait Kaziw Meta to explore the largest private residential yacht on the planet. From the stunning ocean views 🌊 to discovering inspiring career pathways, this experience was about more than just the luxury—it was about opening doors to new possibilities. 💼✨

Celebrating Alick Tipoti’s Achievement! 🌟

Strait Experience is incredibly proud to acknowledge that Alick Tipoti has won the 2024 National NAIDOC Caring for Country and Culture Award! 🏆🎉

Alick Tipoti, a true custodian of his heritage, is a Koedal (crocodile 🐊) and Zugubaw Baydham (seven stars shark constellation ✨🦈) through his father's lineage from Badu, and a Koedal (crocodile 🐊), Thabu (snake 🐍), and Dhoeybaw (wild yam 🍠) through his mother’s lineage from Saibai. As the head of the Koedal totem, known to his people as Zugub (spiritual ancestor 🙏), Alick passionately preserves and promotes his native Kala Lagaw Ya language and cultural traditions through art and dance.

For over 20 years, Alick has showcased his vibrant culture internationally, with his artworks held in esteemed institutions like the British Museum 🏛️ and the National Museum of Australia. His influence has inspired a new generation of Torres Strait artists and revived the traditional art of mask-making.

Alick’s commitment extends beyond art; his powerful performances with the Zugubal Dancers and the recently formed Dhamuw Koedal highlight his dedication to cultural preservation. His impactful work includes climate change awareness, with his art soon to be displayed on Queensland rescue helicopters 🚁.

Strait Experience is proudly leading the way on what sustainable, locally-led and community-centered tourism should look like for tours operators and travel agents.

Strait Experience, has established a Community Fund, called the ‘Good Pasin Community Fund’ which commits 5% of inbound package costs to the local Native Title Prescribed Body Corporate from where the Package operates. On top of the fund, a stand-alone Welcome to Country payment is provided on every package.
These commitments form a significant financial injection to a diverse amount of community.

We also recognise that any tourism must be respectful of Ailan Kastom (Island Custom) and maintain community safety and cultural preservation as paramount factors. We continue to work with Traditional Owner groups via a two-way engagement process which develops a sustainable tourism model which considers the implementation of practical and real-world steps.

Strait Experience, challenges all tour companies working in the region to take similar steps in acknowledging the importance of Good Pasin, reciprocity and giving back.
