Overwater bungalows have typically been the domain of the rich and famous, thankfully, times are changing. A relaxing stay is now within the reach of an increasing number of everyday travellers. There is a world of options for travellers seeking some seaside solace in locations ranging from French Polynesia to Mexico. A personal travel manager can start the journey towards a relaxing bungalow experience.

Siyam World, Maldives
This island resort certainly lets you make a rock star entrance with arrival by seaplane the most common way of checking in. Siyam World is one of the largest islands in the Maldives to boast a resort and showstopping residences.

The overwater bungalows provide all the necessary luxuries plus some fun extras like your own personal pool and slide into the crystal-clear waters below. During your stay make sure you go whale and dolphin watching with 12 different species of whales and dolphins calling the island chains home. It’s also one of the world’s premiere spots to see the majestic whale sharks in action.

Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa, French Polynesia
Perhaps one of the most famous overwater bungalows, the Hilton Bora Bora Nui is the immediate thought for many travellers when the topic of overwater bungalows is brought up. Set amongst stunning mountain backdrops with breathtaking lagoons this resort is all about luxury and relaxation. It would be hard not to relax on an island that has repeatedly been voted as one of the most beautiful in the world.

There are a number of overwater bungalows available on the island. While they all embody luxury, travellers seeking a true five star experience should look into the Presidential Overwater Villas. With only two of these villas available on the island, it’s easy to imagine what the price tag would be. The villas are renowned as being the only two story villas in Tahiti and feature an enormous range of luxuries. Two bedrooms, three bathrooms, five outdoor decks and uninterrupted ocean views are standard in these suites. The villas also include a well being room, a whirlpool bath, a bar and a sundeck – there are also glass floor panels so you can see the exotic marine life swimming below.

Pangkor Laut Resort, Malaysia
This privately owned island is located off the West Coast of Malaysia and literally means “beautiful island”. As a privately owned island, there are no other hotels found on the island. With no other tourists and minimal rooms available the island is a perfect escape for travellers seeking a secluded experience.

The resort is committed to preserving the natural beauty of the island and minimising its environmental impact. Eco minded visitors to the island would appreciate that the majority of the island’s 300 acres remain untouched. Travellers can enjoy this little piece of paradise by exploring its secluded bays, unspoiled beaches and jungle wilderness.

Guests can spoil themselves with a visit to the resort’s world class Spa Village. Unlike other spas, Spa Village offers treatments from an eclectic combination of healing cultures from around the world. With Chinese relaxation therapies, Indian detox remedies and Malay stress reduction techniques it’s an easy way to escape. It’s definitely worth booking an appointment with one of the resorts specialists who can suggest the right type of therapy to suit your style of relaxation. If a spa treatment isn’t for you there is always a stroll through the islands 2 million year old rainforest.

Rosewood Mayakoba Resort, Mexico
Rosewood Mayakoba Resort is the only resort to make the list that isn’t located on an island. Unlike tradional overwater bungalows, Rosewood provides guests with a modern, state of the art villa experience. You won’t find traditional thatched roofs or a solid wood structure but rather contemporary modern architecture, which complements and accentuates the natural beauty of the lagoon.

Established in 2008, this 1600-acre resort is inspired by Mayan traditions and this influence can be seen throughout the resort. Book a Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suite and relax in your private plunge pool as you admire the stunning views of the lagoon and mangroves.

There is so much on offer in this region; travellers can take a crash course in Mayan history and traditions by exploring ancient ruins or visit Riviera Maya to take in the art and culture on display. For travellers more accustomed to shopping and luxury, Cancun and Playa del Carmen are only a short drive away. There’s also the chance to swim in the world’s second largest coral reef.
