A little piece I wrote about becoming a Local in McLaren Vale.

Being acknowledged as a Local is country-town characteristic as rural as the half hour supermarket chat. But getting that acknowledgement is harder than you think. You can’t just live here. Y…

Did you know that the wines at Oxenberry Farm all tell a little of the story of McLaren Vale? You can find out the meaning behind names like “The Sermon Tree” and “Jack of All Trades” with a day walking tour with Wine Tales and Trails. We’ve sold out our first two tours but more dates to be announced soon. (The perplexed but rather gorgeous man in the photo below is Cristian, Oxenberry’s manager. Looking forward to a great collaboration with Oxenberry, site of the very first farm in our beautiful district).

In 1850, 12 year old Thekla Staude regularly trekked 26 kilometres from her home in Hahndorf village to sell her handmade produce at market in Adelaide. Will Maeve and Harper complete the long walk to market to make a sale?

Productive day today marketing Wine Tales and Trails gourmet history walks in McLaren Vale. I snuck a selfie with JF on the blower trying to concentrate (he’s ignoring me - quite rightly so) before we headed out to meet Mark Vandeleur at the McLaren Vale Motel, David Mayne at the McLaren Vale Visitor Information Centre, Chris at Oxenberry Farm and David David Douglas Graham at Shingleback Cellar Door. What lovely chaps all so willing to help us get the business up and going. I’ve also added two pics of our new business postcard and a beautiful photo of the birthplace of McLaren Vale, at Oxenberry Farm, which hangs on the wall there. So looking forward to 8 August for our first walk. There are still spots available if you’d like to book (DM me). But the September walk is almost booked out!!!! Bon week-end nos amis.

Jean Francois, Mim and Jillian invite you to travel back in time to 1915 with Wine Tales and Trails guided gourmet history walk to discover the history of McLaren Vale and how the inventor of Australian Sparkling Shiraz, the genius French winemaker Edmond Mazure almost met his end here. Our guided walk through the historic township and vineyards includes gourmet breakfast with a glass of French sparkling, a glass of Black Bubbles at Shingleback winery with exclusive access to their cellar and, after a walk up Stump Hill, a two course Frossie (French-Aussie) sit-down BBQ lunch cooked by our own French chef in a beautiful location, all accompanied by our history tellers recounting researched tales of the places we visit. Ghost sightings guaranteed. Kangaroo sightings likely.
Next Walks: Saturday 18 July and Saturday 8 August. 9 am to 4 pm.
$125 each (includes breakfast, lunch & two glasses of wine). 12 people minimum.
More wine can be purchased on the day with special discounts to our time travellers.
