Explore the back roads.
Here are 6 things to do while exploring the Mid West. Featuring Morawa, Mullewa and Perenjori

🚗1: Starting in Mullewa, check out the art gallery of local artist Helen Ansell. You can purchase prints or picnic blankets or tea towels and get a nice cup of tea.

🚗2: Then head south on the way to Morawa and stop at Canna. Walk through the Canna reserve up to Canna rock. It’s a 2.2km return trip and a great way to stretch the legs

🚗3: While in Canna check out the local mallee fowl nest. You may just meet the happy couple.

🚗4:Back on the road, keep heading South to Morawa. Head into the Morawa Musuem to meet the local volunteers who would love to show you around.

🚗5:The next town along the wildflower way is Perenjori. The women of Perenjori have started a new collaboration called ‘The PJ collective’ where local hand made products can be purchased from a shop in the Perenjori Main Street. Stop and call in for a browse.

🚗6:Get all nostalgic about life in the good old days at Perenjori’s pioneer musuem, it’s set up in what was the bank in 1929.

Bonus: All three towns have great Catholic Churches built by famous architect John Hawes.

📸John Lloyd, a retired farmer who at 91 still regularly volunteers at the Morawa Musuem. The truck he sits in is the one he used daily on the farm and donated to the musuem when he retired. Yes it still starts

Happy travels

The season is changing and the shrubs are flowering. The annual everlastings and orchids are finishing up and setting seed for next year. Now it’s the perennial shrubs turn.

Look out for cone flowers like the one in this photos and Wattle, Hakea, Grevillea and Melaleuca.

Back in the old days, camping was simple.

You could just find a spot away from others, pitch your tent, roll out your swag and enjoy your surroundings.

Having a shower was not high on the agenda but if you had one, it was probably a tin bucket with nail holes punched in it, and it was tied up in a tree with maybe a modesty blanket to hide your bits.

Now, finding a quiet spot away from others is not so easy. Some camper`s expectations far outweigh reality, and once quiet places are now filled with campers with more mod cons than a 1960`s house.

First it was Camping but now it is often “Glamping” (or “Gramping” for older folk and maybe “Grumping” for older folk with a bad attitude)

Motor homes get bigger, caravans get longer, we have diesel heaters, portable hot showers and toilets, satellite dishes for TV reception out bush, and car fridges with super quiet generators to run them.

Sometimes It`s almost like being at home without the traffic!

Charge your camera, lock up your dogs and pack the esky.

Another "Super-moon" is with us for an Astro spectacle at dusk on Wednesday and Thursday.
Find yourself a suitable happy hour sipping site and take advantage of clear skies and the rising Supermoon as it lifts over the horizon from the east.

The Pinnacles are perfectly placed to ponder the spectacle, but Molah Hill Lookout (between Cervantes and Jurien Bay) and Grigsons lookout (north of Jurien Bay) have perfect elevated happy hour moon watching sites.

You could try some creativity with moonrise reflections over Lake Thetis in Cervantes or get adventurous and out of the way at Langs lookout on Watheroo West Road near Badgingarra.

Point Louise north of Green Head will give you Supermoon views with a beach foreground and if you are keen, an afternoon walk along the trail to the peak of Mt Lesueur and a moonlit return might just do the trick!

🌜 A Blue Moon is the popular term for a second full Moon in a calendar month. While the Moon won’t actually turn blue, it’s still worth going out and observing the Moon, as blue moons only occur once every 2 or 3 years! To add to the excitement, this blue moon is also a supermoon! Find out what that means here. 🌛

When to look: 31st August, 6:17pm

Which direction to look: The Moon rises in the east.

The sun is shining, spring is nearly here and us Bobtails are out and about.

If you see a slow moving, shingle backed 4-legged critter trying to cross the road, please give us some space.

🌼 Nature's Palette is Dimmer This Year 🌼
This wildflower season, we're witnessing the impact of low rainfall and unseasonably warm weather on our beloved wildflowers. The vibrant carpet of colour that usually graces our landscape is a little dimmer this year.

A couple of warm days have started to take their effect on the areas around. This can be positive for some things such as Wreath Flowers, The Carnamah Bell and the Flowering Acacia (which are looking fantastic on the drive up from Moora). The Carnamah Bell can be found flowering still on the Macpherson Homestead Walk (look out for the protective posts to find the location) also on the corner of Parker and Slater street. Wreath flowers up at Pindar have started to flower. A few reports of ones closer to Carnamah in Three Springs (on Bateman Road) and in Perenjori but it is best to contact the local visitor centre. Everlasting fields continue at the Coorow farm and in locations around Carnamah. Orchids are not particularly liking the warm weather though you may still find a few around. It is still a great time to come and visit.

🌸Important reminders while enjoying wildflower country 🌸

🌼 With our beautiful canola fields in flower, this is a friendly reminder that farmland is private property and it is considered trespassing if you are on someones property without their permission.

🌾 Make sure that when out walking in our beautiful wildflower country, it is important to make sure all the dirt is wiped from the tread of your shoes. This helps to stop the spread of any w**d seeds you may have picked up.
📷 Take only pictures and memories and leave only footprints. Please ensure you take all rubbish and food scraps away with you, we want the next generation to be able to enjoy wildflower country as much as we do.
🚗 Pull all the way off the road in a safe place. We want everyone to get home safely to their loved ones.

Newcomers to Sandy Cape.

The Sandy Cape recreation reserve is preening itself for another long weekend of busyness in late September.

For those who have not yet have the privilege of staying there, here are a few pointers.

There are no bookings for Sandy Cape. It is a first in first served campsite. Outside of school holidays and long weekends there is usually space.

The access road off Indian Ocean drive (10 kms north of Jurien Bay) is sealed but the last 1 kilometre is gravel. Roads in the camp areas are gravel.

There are no powered sites but generators are OK during acceptable hours. Toilets are scattered throughout the campgrounds with cold showers available in the south section.

Dogs are welcomed if they are attached to responsible owners via a lead.

Campfires are allowed at this time of year, but you will need to bring your own firewood (available for sale in Jurien Bay at various outlets)

Snorkel, sandboard, swim, or stay on top of an SUP.

Wreath flowers

True warriors of the natural world flowering in gravely soil on the side of the road, just think about how difficult that must be. Yet they bring a delicate burst of colour.

Here are two locations for you to try out

White road- west of Morawa
Pindar - east of Mullewa

Happy exploring and be quick, they don’t hang around forever.

Perenjori - we are more than wildflowers!

Although our flowers may not be in abundance this year we certainly do have many other attractions within our town and surrounds to make Perenjori 100% worth a visit.

There is plenty to find on our main street from the renowned Perenjori Hotel to our Perenjori Museum & Tourist Centre.

And we are super excited about our new additions to town....Daphne's Timeless Treats & PJ Collective.

So whether you are coming to stay or just passing through, we have many a reason to make Perenjori a must stop on your travels.

See you soon!
