The fantastic Lockhart Picnic Races are on this October 4th, bringing the excitement of racing back to Lockhart Shire.

The event continues to draw in people from near and far and is widely known as one of the most enjoyable racing events in country New South Wales.

🕰 There is plenty of time to enjoy a picnic lunch trackside before the racing commences - Gates open at 12pm with the first races commencing at 1:30pm!

👗 Fashion and style are always important on race day, and Lockhart Picnic Races are no exception. One of the highlights of the day is the hotly contested judging of Fashions on the Field.

🍽 They'll be food will be available to purchase on the day. All you need to bring is yourself and drinks - a bar will be available on the day.

The breathtaking golden sea of canola is in full bloom across the Murrumbidgee Trails, turning our landscapes into a stunning patchwork of vibrant yellow. 🌼
These radiant fields highlight our region's beauty and play the vital role of agriculture in our community.

We suggest planning a visit soon if you'd like to see it for yourself 👀 Depending on the weather and the season, it'll hopefully hang around into early October - fingers crossed, friends 🤞

Head to Narrandera Pony Club this weekend and experience it firsthand with the REA Wagga Horse Trials on.

Take the family and watch on as some of the finest equestrians in the state come together to compete across three disciplines, dressage, show jumping and cross country.

This year’s event will have a designated area for spectators, canteen, coffee van, and plenty of exhilarating action!

Saturday and Sunday 10 and 11 August from 8.30am into the afternoon.

Explore Jerilderie this weekend – you might be surprised to learn it’s just 326 kilometres from Melbourne on the Newell Highway 🚗

Start off at Horgan Walk and see part of Billabong Creek’s 320-kilometre length as it passes through Jerilderie. You can also see the line of the creek on the wings of the Wedge-tailed Eagle Mural – find it on the side of the Jerilderie Bakery… And pop in for a pie or something sweet after you take a look, too.

Walk the same streets Ned Kelly’s gang once did as you soak up the history of this township. The self-guided Ned Kelly Raid Trail is part of The Official Ned Kelly Touring Route and includes 16 sites associated with the gang’s audacious raid in 1879. Along the way, detour for a wander around peaceful Lake Jerilderie.

There’s nothing quite like exploring our region with a caravan in tow. The promise of the open road and the freedom to enjoy the trails without the confines of an itinerary spark a delicious sense of adventure.

When it’s time to rest, park up by the sandy beaches of the Murrumbidgee at Darlington Point Riverside Caravan Park (pictured) or make camp at Gogeldrie Riverside Park for easy fishing and boating access.

For more water views, you can enjoy picturesque Lake Talbot when you make a stop at Lake Talbot Tourist Park or the Lockhart Caravan Park.

Oasis Caravan Park offers a quiet bush setting, whilst those after a night closer to town will enjoy Leeton Caravan Park's proximity to local attractions.

Love spending time in the great outdoors? You’re spoilt for choice around here. The Murrumbidgee River is a favourite for locals and visitors to launch a kayak or throw in a line.

If you want to stick around for a while, there are no shortages of places to set up camp either. Willbriggie Regional Park gives access to the Murrumbidgee River from both sides of the river around Darlington Point. You’ll find a number of quiet spots by the water here like Bunyip Hole and Whittackers Bend (dirt road access, suitable for caravans in dry weather).

Can you believe this sculpture along with 20 others was created from recycled farm materials? 😱

The Pastoral Shadows of Brookong offers a gentle, circular stroll that guides you through Lockhart's history using rusted iron, scraps of metal, and other natural materials to weave a visual narrative.

If the trail is on the list for your adventure, don't miss a look at (and a quick snap of) the cheeky Bunyip of Burra Creek, the mighty Rain Dragon or Dance Hall Night.

National NAIDOC Week, beginning on the 7th, running through to the 14th of July, offers all Australians a chance to learn about First Nations cultures and histories. It is a time to celebrate the oldest, continuous living cultures on Earth.

When visiting the Murrumbidgee Trails, take the opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal culture and the history of our region.

If you're interested in a guided experience, consider Mark Saddler, a local Wiradjuri man who leads Bundyi Cultural Tours [Wiradjuri Mob]. He offers a variety of tour options, including full-day, half-day, and overnight experiences. Mark is pictured at the Yerong Creek Water Tower, where his donated artwork is also featured. For those interested in independent exploration, there are several significant Wiradjuri sites to discover and learn about. These include the Fivebough and Tuckerbil wetlands near Visit Leeton, as well as The Rock Nature Reserve - Kengal Aboriginal Place and Galore Hill Scenic Reserve in Visit Lockhart Shire.

You can also take a self-guided drive to explore Leeton’s Lyrics, Landscapes, and Lintels Public Art Trail, which features various sites dedicated to discovering the area’s Aboriginal heritage.

When visiting Narrandera Tourism be sure to see the Wiradjuri Honour Wall located in Marie Bashir Park. This wall commemorates the Narrungdera Clan members and honours the Wiradjuri people of Narrandera Shire. Nearby, you can visit the Sandhills Artefacts gallery and workshop, where Wiradjuri descendant Michael Lyons warmly welcomes visitors.

Displayed on the walls of the Murrumbidgee Council Chambers in Jerilderie is Yo-thun-ing-yuna Ngarratya, a remarkable artwork by four Barundji/Barkindji artists. Its name, meaning ‘coming together,’ was crafted to greet visitors during the 2000 Olympic Games, where it adorned Parliament House.

Come and learn about the Coleambally Irrigation Area, the history of the water wheel, and what our farmers can do with water at the Coleambally Irrigation Cooperative water wheel display.

Located in the main street of Coleambally (Brolga Pl), this outdoor, interactive and best of all free display is accessible for everyone to come along and learn about irrigation farming.

🎨Looking for artwork direct from the artists? Look no further than the Kerri Weymouth Art Studio & Gallery - a must-see gallery in the heart of Coleambally.

Explore ever-changing exhibitions, browse eclectic gifts or enjoy workshops and pop-up events. And in outdoor art is more your thing, there's the Coleambally water tower with magnificent mosaic depicting the history of the local area at the base, or the outdoor animal sculptures spread throughout the town.

Many may not be aware of the diverse range of farms along the Murrumbidgee Trails, including the Marrocka Emus Farm situated in The Rock.

Established in 1994 by Ian and Marilyn Marston, the Marrocka Emu Farm spans a 100-acre plot of land. By chance, the Marstons discovered that their land was exceptionally suited for emu farming.

Today, Marrocka Emu Farm provides guided tours to expand on this very unusual but growing industry. Bookings Essential.

Perched above the tranquil waters of Lake Talbot sits the 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐒𝐤𝐲𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤.

With breathtaking views in every direction, set your eyes upon the Water Park to one side, across to the Flora and Fauna Reserve, or along the Lake - you can almost see Rocky Waterholes if you really squint 👀
