James Cook Museum - the museum is housed in a building that was completed in 1889 and run as St Mary's convent of mercy for boarding school.

They do run paranormal activity night tours!!

Knowing the basics of the First Fleet, Captain James Cook.
This place gives so much history about the Captain Cook and also Indigenous recounts of the time some which were sad.

The museum had different area's... the Gold Rush era, WWI, WWII and the history onf the building.

And it was also good for the kid's as we are home schooling on the road.

Entry - $35 for a family of 5

Archer Point - 16 km south east from Cooktown along a not so bad dirt road you will find an awesome lookout, if it was not so windy it would have been even better.

Not only was Archer point home to a lighthouse, but also in WWII it was home to a Ran signals unit, when agriculture began in Lakefield Archer Point became a deep water port.

Black Mountain Lookout
The Dreamtime story is people have explored the mountain never to return as the Rainbow Serpent lives within the mountain and eats them.
Unfortunately some of the signs were written on with some nasty things (very disappointing)

Stopped off at The Lions Den Hotel on the way to Cooktown.
If only the walls could talk there would be so many stories.
Talking about walls, Martin’s Making Memories was added to the wall.
Camping onsite with a swimming hole behind the camp grounds.
It even has it's own little museum.

Fact - The town of Rossville was named after the store keeper and hotel operator Jack Ross ( who owned the Lions Den hotel )

As an added bonus we made some great friend's from Campedia .. the kid's really hit it off and were sad to see them go.

Mossman Gorge - Park at the Mossman Gorge Centre and catch the bus up to the gorge.

For a family of 5 tickets (including the bus) cost $37.30.

It was pretty busy at the first swimming hole but the numbers thinned out pretty quick.

The suspension bridge was a challenging one for our 11 year old as she has a fear of heights but after 10 minutes of thinking about it she did it. Proud parent's moment.

We did the 2km walking track through the rainforest with a few spots to stop along the way to have a dip.

Tait's Wongabel Stable's Atherton

We went here to tick another one off the girl's bucket list.

So awesome to see the nervous but excited face's of the girl's.
They loved every minute of their trail ride around the property. It was meant to be a 1 hour lesson but ended up going for 2 hour (not complaining though).

Can highly recommend Tait's Wongabel Stable's.

Shelia and her daughter were excellent taking there time to explain thing's and being very patient.

Pretty easy to find as it is sign posted along the way.

You do have to book in by phone or email -
Phone - (07) 4091 2070
[email protected]

They do run a couple of different rides -
1 hour ride - $50
Half day ride - $90 includes boiling billy for morning tea down by the river.
Full day ride - $130

Kuranda Koala Gardens

On the bucket list was to hold a Koala i know you can do it at most place's but it was Easter
It not a massive park but still pretty good.

From there we went to Barron Falls Lookout it has a boardwalk track down with a couple of view platforms along the way.

Wright's Lookout only a short stroll to have a view that look's out towards Cairns.

So we have had some misty rain in Atherton but that hasn't stopped us exploring.

Milla Milla waterfalls loop with three different waterfalls.

We started a Millaa Millaa Falls where the kids decided to have a dip.

Zillie falls nice muddy climb down to the bottom for a good picture, but heaps of fun.

Ellinjaa Falls the kids had a quick swim but it was a bit cold.

We ended up heading back into Millaa Millaa lions park to have some lunch under cover.

Gallo Dairyland Atherton, experience cow's being milked from 3:00pm.

Awesome place for the kids and adult's getting to see the process of cow's being milked. Getting the chance to pat poddy calves.. they were so friendly.
They make there own cheese onsite but we missed seeing that. Normally they have chesse tasting but due to covid it's not running.
But you can still buy cheese, have a coffee or milkshake and have some yummy chocolate.

We took a trip to the Tolga Bat Hospital in Atherton. It is the largest bat rehabilitation centre in Australia which started in 1990.

Awesome place run mostly by volunteers that are very passionate about what they do.

We had a pretty interesting tour finding out about the different breeds of bats, hearing and seeing the ecolocation of a micro bat, the flying fox and their pups.

Tours run daily 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm bookings are essential.

We based ourselves at Atherton over Easter.
The area has so much to do and see.

Curtain Fig National Park, Yungaburra

Curtain Fig Tree is so unique having an arial root system that drops 15 metres to the forest floor forming a curtain, also being heritage listed and estimated to be over 500 years old. At a height of 50 metres, and trunk circumference of 39 metres.
Exploreing the Curtain Fig Tree via a boardwalk that runs around the whole tree so you can view it from every angle.

Had a quick stop at the information centre to see what to explore.

The smelters, now heritage listed, started production in 194. Employing 1000 people the smelters were used to produce ore, copper, lead, silver and gold.

It is one of the largest slag dumps remaining in Queensland.

Operations at the smelter ceased in 1943 and in the 1950 the buildings and equipment were auctioned off.

15 km up another dirt road are the Archways Caves located in Mungana National Park. The caves have some spectacular coral reef looking walls and roof sections, Micro bats, and small sectons to crawl through.

We also checked out the Aboriginal paintings just around the corner from the Archways.

Heading back into town was Balancing Rock which was said to have been struck by lightning both sides leaving the rock balancing in this position.

At the ended of two big day's we headed for a free camp 1 hour 16 minutes east to Eureka creek.
